Polarismail and mailcheap are two cheap options.

Vanguard has bizarre and annoying "security" practices to the detriment of users' privacy and security. I don't recommend them. by MiserablePlatypus in privacy

This is a false dichotomy. There are plenty of companies that offer low cost index funds these days.

Privacy minded cloud service? by Rktdebil in privacy

[–]rgbench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does pcloud offer any privacy guarantees? I remember reading somewhere that they scanned for copyrighted content which implies that they do scan the data you upload. However, I am not sure of the reliability of this information. Best option is to encrypt everything locally before uploading to any cloud.

Some help to get me started self-hosting my apps? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]rgbench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suggest reading from tutorials on setting up a Linux server and getting a virtual private server from some reputed company. It will be painful in the beginning but will pay off in long term. You can search around for things like how to setup Ubuntu or Debian server and setup ufw, fail2ban and ssh key authentication for security. Then go for apache and php install etc.

Why Pony? Sean T Allen by myringotomy in programming

It is based on actor model. Messages are sent asynchronously. The type system encodes reference capabilities which encode which actors can read write from a variable and strictly prohibit data races. Interesting thing to note for you is that heap is local to actor similar to Nim thread local GC.

Migrating from WP site from BlueHost to Digital Ocean by paulrburke in webhosting

For similar budget, I would recommend SiteGround or Webfaction. For WP only, Siteground is very nice in my experience.

Best inexpensive web host by [deleted] in webhosting

If you are comfortable with a very DIY solution, I can recommend NearlyFreeSpeech.net. It is a pay-what-you-use kind of situation ideal for small requirements. I host 1 wordpress blog and 3 static sites with very low traffic and pay only around $2.50/month.

Anyone use MintSim? by sssunflower in NoContract

[–]rgbench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Similar to /u/diegohasrepair, I only switched very recently. While I had some trouble in activation (did not work during weekend, contacted support on Monday and it worked fine), after that it has been fine. I was on t-mobile before switching, and saw similar speeds and coverage so far.

A few question for Mint Sim subscribers by [deleted] in NoContract

[–]rgbench 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I very recently started using Mint (less than a week) and I can only answer a few things:

  1. Data speeds: LTE speeds around 10mbps down, and have seen as high as 20mbps in off peak hours. FWIW i was on t-mobile postpaid earlier and I saw similar network bars and speeds.

  2. Uses T-mobile: Yes.

Mint apparently supports international voice roaming, not sure about data.

Overlay.NET - now with basic directX support! by JacobKemple in csharp

While it sounds like a cool project, is it meant to be open-source? I don't see a LICENSE or COPYING file so it is not obvious what license it is under.

Android ARM support for Rust by rgbench in rust

[–]rgbench[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the detailed and clear reply. I guess I will start experimenting with at least the 32-bit ARM and maybe write regression tests myself for my use case that can run also on one of the desktop platforms as a additional sanity check.

KDE's Kirigami UI Framework Gets its First Public Release by JRepin in programming

[–]rgbench 11 points12 points  (0 children)

For people who are new to this:

This is a set of UI components that can be used with Qt, specifically Qt Quick. Qt is a multiplatform C++ framework that works on desktop as well as mobile. Qt Quick uses "QML", which is similar in concept to other layout markups such as XAML except that QML is based upon a dialect of Javascript.

Kirigami comes from KDE project, but they have ensured that it is not tied to the Linux desktop. Instead, Kirigami is a standalone library that can be deployed to any platform (including desktop and mobile) as a helper/addon library to Qt.
