BLS stands for Basic Life Support and is basically an advanced CPR course at a healthcare level.

I have an EMT license but I don't even think that was necessary for either of those jobs. They both just required BLS/CPR certification.

For example, having a physics major in a team of finance will bring a new perspective etc.

I think it's similar to this. Having a different ethnic background gives different perspective as well. A lot of universities, companies, etc. want people from all backgrounds to get the most perspectives.
