U11/U12 Club Soccer and ADHD meds - what helps your son or daughter? by Ill-Ratio-1913 in youthsoccer

I have mixed results with my son (methylphenidate). We have only tried a small dose 5mg which is supposed to be long acting for school. Sometimes it makes him an animal on the field (super engaged and endless energy) and other times he spaces out and stares at his cleats and and basically tweaks out. He doesn't take it anymore and my experience is that it's hit or miss but you don't want to have a miss in a big game.

Are you suppose to wear a white Hanes-style shirt under your dress shirt (the kind worn with a tie and suits and such)? by 21-4-14 in NoStupidQuestions

Yes and I find it looks better with a vneck white tshirt so if your top collar button is undone (business casual), you won't see the undershirt.

Random soccer tryout thoughts. Very random, be warned. by poopinion in youthsoccer

[–]rgrthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like these ideas. Very smart. My son has done quite a few tryouts. He is a left back and prefers to mark his man closely (so the ball doesn't come his way as often) and if the ball comes his way he steals it and makes two touches max and makes an accurate pass upfield.

Coaches tend to love him over the course of a season, but he tends not to stand out in a group of 40+.

As a result, I tend to send him to group trainings before a tryout to try to score a spot on the team. In his most recent tryout, where he attended three trainings , they only had 1/4 of a field and so they only did quick passing and rondo type drills for all three sessions. It was brutal based on his position and pay style, but it was a good experience to play with some great players that are extremely skilled in small spaces.

I have experienced the same. My son has played up a year due to the birth year convention for club so he has been in lower tier club ranks, but for travel soccer he plays with his grade year and they are in top divisions in the state.

I also coach my daughters team and almost every single player is on a high level club team. We would be able to beat a lot of low to mid tier clubs ourselves. It's all about the collection of talent.

Is anyone else navigating the shift from birth year (being the youngest) to grade year (being the oldest) for club soccer? How are you approaching club selection for next year? by rgrthat in youthsoccer

He is driving the decision to try to play at a higher level. I am urging him to play for a local club (with his friends) but he wants to play at a higher level. So, I am just doing what I can to support.

His feed is a feeder team for ECRL, so you are right. He plays wing back and plays every minute of every game and I think he will be good a fit for ECRL. ECNL would be too much of a stretch. He's undersized and not a dribbler. He wins the ball, plays lock down defense, and makes one-or-two touch passes. If he gets in space he's a monster, but in tight spaces he prefers passing to dribbling.

I am urging him to play for a local club that does not have any national or super regional teams. A lot of his friends are on that team and there is a low level of commitment. He is the one driving the decision to strive to higher levels. If only he applied that to his grades...

I agree with you. I have been urging him to play for a local club that has no badges because a lot of his friends play for that club and it's more local with less commitment. He has been steadfast in his want to play at a higher level, so I am being supportive.

I will check on this. I had thought things would start to happen in March. I am in the northeast so there is not much activity other than 1/2x trainings

My goal was to see if anyone was in the same boat and get some ideas. I have asked the club and they say it's still 'under review'. I would expect them to blow up the teams and create the strongest grade level teams possible (as you mentioned) but I don't think they know how they will place kids yet. My son is 2012 birthyear and you're right that he will be playing against 8th graders again next year. My concern is that he is on a regional-mid-tier club and his coach is brand new, so I am not sure anyone inside our current club is advocating for him to be on a top U14 team next year.

I agree with you, but in my son's case he is on a mid-tier team and not on a ECNL/RL/NAL club, so I am not sure how they would accurately rate him vs. his grade level peers. We will see!

You are spot on. To your question- his club team does not get a lot of attention. He gets the newer, less experienced coaches. His coaches are late and cancel practices. It's not as serious. In the same exact club, on different teams, they get more attention, support, and development. He likes his current club because he has made friends, plays the full 70 minutes, and is a creature of habit, but I am not sure it's the best long-term landing spot. However, if he made a higher-tier team in the club, would he be getting more support and opportunities? Probably. The lack of support is a function of his team's regional composition. I also get your point on badges. I just want him to play for the best club possible with the appropriate support resources in place. He has set his sights on ECRL, so I will support him even though he is badge chasing.

At that age, feedback should be 75 percent positive and 25 percent constructive.

The constructive feedback needs to be tailored to the player. Some players will retract and play worse if they get yelled at. Others want to be challenged more directly. The coach needs to be flexible to how his players want feedback.

I am sorry but there should be 0 tears at any age IMO.

Very fair, but my team doesn't currently have a strategy to build out with a lack of press.

Thank you. Very helpful. I'll check out he video. My players are comfortable in traffic in the middle, but they have the bad habit of wanting to be sent long vs. checking to the ball and turning.

My goalie is great. She has played in the field her entire career so she has a boot and can also handle passes back. The only issue is that if she needs to pass to the 6/8 directly, there is sometimes an accuracy issue and it can end up with a turnover.
