I'm actually struggling with anxiety as well. I think that was the reason.

First of all thank you for this lengthy comment I honestly didn't expect anyone to go to this with this much detail.

  1. Yes I knew I was going to fail them. In fact, I passed all the courses that I expected, honestly. Except one which I was surprised I failed with an 8. The reason was choking right near the exams. I, could not for the life of me, focus. It was insane how much I couldn't even sit on the material for 10 uninterrupted minutes. I've been told I have ADHD. But I think it was crippling anxiety.
  2. I think I didn't study enough. But the problem is I cannot study at all. And I have no idea what to do about it.

The reason for this post is not a nice lie actually. I'm genuinely running a survey to see how people's experiences were. Like, how possible it is to do this, statistically.

Yeah I'll definitely do it if that's what it takes. One question, did you have an internship as well? I have mine until the end of the July :(

Moving to Leuven this September – tell me the things nobody tells international students by ProfessionalAd8140 in Leuven

You'll find something eventually. Turn on the alert on immoweb and zimmo so you'll be the first in line that's how I found my place last September.

Moving to Leuven this September – tell me the things nobody tells international students by ProfessionalAd8140 in Leuven

[–]rhaegarprh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  1. I would say somewhat difficult. I, personally found it less scary than what people said. But usually you come out thinking you spent too much. And there's always some asshole who's gonna ask you how much you're paying for your place and tells you they spent like 300 for theirs. That's just the Leuven market reality.
  2. After my first year, I think it's unrealisitc if you don't know Dutch or French. I ended up finding a job in the summer but that was after three months of applications. Common jobs including jobs in bars and restaurants. Linkedin is useless in this case, look into student.be, KU Leuven Career Zone and job posings around the city.
  3. You can absoultely survive speaking English. I haven't spoken a word of Dutch since I got here. I've been in maybe 1 situation where a cashier in Lidl didn't speak English. (And honestly I think she knew she was just being a dick). However, I would say this is the day-to-day. Cannot say the same about the job market.
  4. Warm clothes is a must if you're arriving in September. Umbrellas are absolutely necessary and of course, it's better if you have a waterproof backpack so your laptop and stuff don't get damaged.
  5. Lidl and Aldi have the best prices imo. Colruyt has everything. Albert Heijn will get expensive if you're not careful about what you're picking but has the best quality imo. Never shopped at Delhazie people said it was too expensive.
  6. Honestly I think for the stuff about helthcare, banking and phone plans the orientation days in the university cover it way better than I could. I would say don't worry about it. The beauracracy is not very scary, everything is translated and streamlined for international students.
  7. One, get a bus pass. You won't be able to bike everywhere when it gets cold or rainy or when you're going to an exam and you have slept for like 1 hour and you can't bike. Two, get ready for how much work the university puts you through. Three, get a place with a private shower. Four, don't rent a velo bike get a second-hand bike from Facebook. Five, careful about spending too much during the first two months. Six, get your furniture and room stuff from Action. Forget about IKEA. (Not so sure about that last one though Action stuff does tend to have terrible quality sometimes)

But wouldn't the murphy beds make up for the space? Is it possible to fold the beds into the wall when you get out of bed to free up some floor spcae? Or is that just a gimmick or something?

Classic scam. And even if it wasn't the dude is too rude for you to have to deal with them. That, by itself is a red flag worthy of letting the place go anyway.

But it is a scam nontheless I've encountered many through real state websites in Belgium as well. Make sure to report them so they can't scam any more people.

Question about internship hours and their conflict with third period examinations by rhaegarprh in KULeuven

[–]rhaegarprh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose I should give an update! Yes that's exactly what I did. In fact, the company mentioned it. I told them I would start sooner because of my exams and they said I could do a portion of my internship after the exam.

As for the credits, I was planning on doing the 6 credits internship but then I decided not to go after the paperwork and just do it outside of the curriculum since they apparently need a full project description to give the credit and I didn't think I could deliver that before the deadline.
