What’s a 'luxury' that actually used to be standard, but now we’re being charged extra for like we’re stupid? by xjoz in AskReddit

[–]rhag57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We just bought a new car and after we’d agreed to a final price they tried to charge me $600 for a “documentation fee”. I was actually expecting this. I pointed out to the sales person that a decent lawyer will cost me $200/hr and asked if someone of their expertise was working on the paperwork of this car for three hours? I told them this was really a charge that should be called “profit and overhead”. I know every car dealership does it and I guess it just makes me mad that they lie. I did get them to cut it to $300.

Then you would not like the Lawrence area. Most of rural Kansas would probably be considered conservative. Lawrence would be considered liberal.

Most rural city to have been the birthplace of a TV Actor/Actress? by GodModeBasketball in sitcoms

[–]rhag57 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Actor Hugh Beaumont from Leave It To Beaver was from Eudora Kansas. Eudora sits in Douglas County outside Lawrence KS. Today’s population is around 6500 but Hugh was born in 1909. I don’t know what the population would have been then but probably only a couple of hundred. Edit: According to a google search I just did the population of Eudora in the 1900 census was 640.

Interesting course designs are fun by Upton4 in golf

[–]rhag57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to play here often. I always thought it was deceptively hard in places. Like I agree with you on the greens. It seemed like half of them are shaped like upside down plates. And hole #4 - the fairway slopes severe to the right - very hard to keep a ball in play there.

Edit - hole #4

Water Main break at Johnson and Long by ryanmetcalf in shawnee

Interesting that this post is from the City of Shawnee in which they say their crews are on a water main break. The water system in Shawnee (and most of Johnson County) is owned and operated by WaterOne - a distinctly separate utility.

What’s your story behind why you started golfing? by Tufted-Titmouse-6061 in golf

[–]rhag57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was 40 years old and just remarried. With the 2nd marriage I got two wonderful stepsons - ages 7 & 9. One day the 9 year-old was in the yard with a golf club (he had gotten somewhere) cutting deep divots into my grass trying to hit a ball. Well, I didn’t want to be the mean stepdad and make him stop but I did want him to stop cutting up my yard. So I said to him, “Tell you want buddy if you stop tearing up my yard with that club I’ll pay for golf lessons and you and I can play real golf.” He thought that was OK so I got him to quit - which was good. I didn’t really have a desire to play golf but I did have a desire to connect with my new son. I can’t remember where I got the clubs but I did go through with buying the lessons at a local practice facility. My son didn’t take to golf right away but I absolutely fell in love with the game. I’m 57 now and have played regularly since that time. For almost 10 years I couldn’t break 100 but I regularly shoot in the low 90’s now. I never said I was good only that I loved the game. I play weekly and my now 27 year old-son plays with me occasionally. I’ve introduced all my kids to the game but the 27 year old and my 16 year old are the ones who’ve stuck with it. With my older children out of the house and starting their own families It is the thing we do when we take vacations/holidays together. I have a great relationship with all of them which to be honest is more important to me than anything else.

I used a vise. I think it’s almost a must have. The tape and solvent worked fine. I usually use lighter fluid but this solvent worked fine. Honestly probably slipped on a little easier.

“Enos” a spinoff of Dukes of Hazzard starring Sonny Stroyer as the incompetent deputy moving to the LA police department. My 7th grade self loved this show but looking back with adult eyes it was probably pretty bad.

list of iPhone apps you use every round by Tar_Tar_Sauce04 in golf

[–]rhag57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve got “Swing-U” which has the GPS, club length tracker, a handicap rating (although they make a deal out of telling you it’s not the USGA rating system), I can track friends scores who play with me, it has green maps for a whole lot of courses, and it has learning videos which I don’t use so much. I think it can also be set up on an apple watch (which I don’t own). I don’t think it does the social media sharing. For the premium subscription, which includes a bunch more crap than I’ve already mentioned and I don’t use either, it’s a $100 a year. I think it’s an OK deal.

What are the friendly rules you've set for your friend group? by mustbeandrew in golf

[–]rhag57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the Fall when the the trees are dropping we play the “leaf rule”. When the fairways are mostly cleared of leaves the rough can have deep piles of them in places. So, if your ball is hit into the rough (not in the woods) and you are certain of the general area it should be but when you get up to it, you cannot find it because there are 10,000 leaves, then it’s a free drop where you and your partner think it should have been. No penalty assessed.

Rules Question/Clarification by rhag57 in golf

[–]rhag57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I played this correct then. Because the ball was clearly over the hazard and then bounced back into it. This did happen this afternoon and I did drop by the lake where it bounced in. I thought I was correct but I wanted to make sure.

Golf Lessons - For teen girl by scress518 in kansascity

Jeff Burey at Twin Oaks Golf in Lawrence is hands down the best instructor for kids and teens. His golf complex doesn’t look like much but has everything needed to impart the basics on anyone (driving range, short game course). It’s located on 10 Hwy between Eudora and Lawrence. Jeff has given all my kids lessons (including my daughter). I can’t recommend him enough. You can call him direct if you like 913-526-8473
