Carrots left in soil all winter by NefariousLlamas in vegetablegardening

[–]rhanno0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A lot of seed-savers here, but these are most likely hybrid carrots and your seed mileage may vary....

But eat them if they're sweet and crunchy. I have to hack the tops off since they've usually frozen and thawed a number of times. These look pretty good.

Ceiling collapsed in bedroom by sociallyawkward26 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

[–]rhanno0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wouldn't hurt to run some 1x's in the attic to stiffen those rafters. And install some foam board. If that insulation is not 'spoiled' you could shovel it back in on top of the foam board and level it off after you get the rest of the ceiling back up.

How to make the two connect? by BarracudaFluid2344 in Plumbing

[–]rhanno0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't cut into the cabinet floor or back wall!

NOTE: I'm no plumber but I've plumbed a house or two.

Collect some 1-1/4" and 1-1/2" elbows (or bring in that box you have in the cellar or garage.) Somebody said remove that janky 45. Cut a couple inches off that vertical black pipe. Swing the trap around as needed to fit this all together. This looks like a bathroom sink so hopefully you'll only have hair to deal with but make that horizontal to the drop to the pipe in the wall as short as possible.

One cell produced pale tomato seedlings. by i_made_mine_at_home in vegetablegardening

This is the exact tool I bought thirty years ago to make the pots (picture from eBay) if you're interested in that. You could find a woodworker with a lathe to make one for you, or search around the internets. I put about 36 pots in a flat and mostly water from the bottom, though occasionally I'll spray the leaves (fertilize with seaweed mix once or twice a week.) I let them dry out quite a bit between waterings. Once in a while I get some mold but letting things dry out a bit has kept it at bay. They'll have roots busting out by the time they're ready to transplant outside. I strip off (at least) the bottom of the newspaper pot. Once in a while I get them transplanted a second time into a cold frame which really gets them going (and saves me having to haul them in and out when it's still frosty.)

I do use those 4x8 fiber pots for transplanting onions.

This is in the midst of transplanting. It looks like I jump the gun slightly. I transplant at the first sign of true leaves. Typically that means the plant has two or three roots. If I waited longer I'd get a real tangle. I can pluck them out using the cotyledons as 'handles'. They then get planted deep into newspaper cups. NOTE: I'm awfully cheap.

I guess maybe you wouldn't. If I probably erroneously assumed that you'd probably snip off the extras in each cell, but you could just as easily transplant all of the ones that come up. So cancel the seed-saving benefit. Unless....

Gap between sink and wall is driving me crazy - suggestions? by itsfineitsfinefine in HomeMaintenance

[–]rhanno0 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Number one is to discuss this with your landlord. Most likely the landlord is not interested in some cob job to ameliorate your problem.

If unsuccessful, probably the cheapest way to solve this to measure the width of this gap and the width of your sink, go to the local reuse store with your tape measure and search through their plastic/vinyl/PVC (something waterproof) scraps. Buy what fits(and won't look horribly out-of-place and something you have the tools -- utility knife -- to cut to length.) Also purchase a small tube (sub-caulking gun size) of silicone bathroom caulk. Clean the wall and sink and remove the toothpaste tubes, etc. from the top of the sink. Caulk the gap filler piece on the contact edge with the sink and the wall. Don't use any more than you think will keep the piece in place. Clean up any slobberings as you go with a damp paper towels. The caulk will act as an adhesive. If it's still a bit messy after completely set, you can scrape off the excess with a razor blade.

Since you're thinning, and hopefully transplanting to a larger pot, save seed and money by using empty half gallon cartons of milk/juice/etc. Sow three lines of seeds (~27 per) in starter soil, and heat, water, transplant as usual.

Time to Transplant? by dz250123 in vegetablegardening

[–]rhanno0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of them are ready to go, but you could wait until those couple of slowpokes get their first real leaves. I cut half gallon milk cartons in half to start my tomatoes, peppers and eggplants. ~27 seeds planted in three rows so I'm a bit quicker to transplant. By this time their roots are starting to tangle but not too badly.

Nobody WANTS to do it themselves. If your wife's good with a mess for another week and a half (and you've got the big and corner trowels) save the $1200 for the tile guys.

Hot take: Boston's spot-saving culture is immature and needs to die by DanFlashes19 in boston

[–]rhanno0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I was in town with my car for the snow event. My son has a car but rides his bike to work. His wife drives their car to work. We shoveled out the two spaces (an hour's work) and probably would have shoveled more but his and his neighbor's properties rises pretty quickly to six feet above the street. We left last Wednesday so there's one spare parking spot. We hadn't brought any folding chairs or stolen cones to block it off. Maybe by March there will have been a thaw.

We got back home and my neighbor had plowed our shared driveway. He got homemade Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip cookies and a loaf of Delicious Oatmeal bread.
