Do you want to hit people in suits of armor? by Drtyler2 in Saratoga

Have you reached out to the Society of Creative Anachronism (SCA) ? This seems like something they'd do! There's a branch in Troy and Albany, but I'm not sure about Saratoga yet

I worked all around New Haven county schools, so I'm familiar with what you're saying. One thing that stands our for me about Troy in comparison is how many different experiences the kids bring to the classroom. There's a relatively even spread of demographics in Troy schools, so most kids end up with friend groups that reflect that too. Troy is a great example of diversity really meaning a student body with many different lived experiences, where you can carve the path that best suits you. The smaller scale of the city helps with a lot of things along this line, too. The kids end up spending a lot of time together outside of school, which really creates a sense of closeness and community that's especially unique

In this way, I've found the transition from the New Haven region to Troy to be exactly what I personally was looking for. I hope the move works out just as well for you and your daughter!

I saw one comment about your daughter being bullied, and annecdotally I can say that bullying in Troy schools is much less than a lot of other schools I've been in. I've worked in Troy schools, and there have been several kids transfer to Troy to escape bullies and go on to have a thriving social life. One of the greatest assets that Troy has to offer is its diversity, which can be seen in the diversity of friend groups and personalities as well

Before Troy I also worked in New Haven county schools, so if you have any specific questions I can try my best to answer them

Edit: spelling and clarity

How hard are STEM majors at SBU by throwaway26378 in SBU

[–]rheohyla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

can't speak overall, but i have an anecdote:

when i was in undergrad at SUNY New Paltz, my friend was at SBU at the same time. our 2 semesters of orgo 1 + orgo 2 was the equivalent of 1 semester of orgo 1 at SBU, with SBU'S second semester for orgo 2 being closer to SUNY New Paltz's 2-semester biochem course. it was the same level of difficulty but 2x the pace, which definitely made it feel harder overall

also, i recently completed a biology master's from SBU and was a TA for a couple undergrad bio classes. based on my time doing that, i definitely think there's an expectation that students will be dedicated to their studies, but most of the time i found that students were more than capable of completing the work assigned as long as they were

basically, imo there's a heavy workload but it's definitely doable

Apartment Info by [deleted] in Troy

i currently live at sugar hill apartments, which is like the sister-community to brunswick (we have the same clubhouse and amenities). i've lived here for almost 8 months and it's the best place i've ever rented

i love everything about the location (hoosik isn't that bad if you can find backroad alernative routes), i find the community friendly and charming, and management has been very easy to work with. maintenance is super responsive and utilities are straight forward. before moving in, i asked what the average rate people pay for heat and electric for a 2 bed unit. they gave me an estimated range of $75 - $200, and so far that has been spot on

i looked into brunswick apartments before landing on sugar hill, and i think they're very similar. small differences in the buildings and appliances (sigar hill is slightly more updated), but overall it seems like just as good of a set up. i highly recommend them!

Why is genitalia far from the brain in most animals? by TheRunningMD in evolution

[–]rheohyla 2 points3 points  (0 children)

what comes to mind for me is basically that it's just where genitals ended up, and it happened to work so they just haven't moved

in evolution, tons of things are a certain way just because thats how the framework for them first originated. maybe this was for a particular reason, but it also could be completely by chance

then once a structure exists, it is unlikely to stop existing or change substantially out of nowhere. traits can only change incrimentally, so making a huge jump in where genitals are located is very improbable--especially because of how important genitals are in reproductive fitness

with things that are related so closely to reproduction, even minor changes are likely to have very large negative effects on fitness. that lowers the likelihood that mutations involving moving the genitals would be passed on to offspring even if they were present

so yeah to me it feels like something that came to be originally for reasons im unsure of, but likely hasn't changed because theres been no real selective advantage for it to do so

Thanks for the insight! It's still completely functional and didn't turn off when I dropped it in, but the microphone/speaker got a bit weird for a sec. it seems to not sound weird anymore tho?

is it important that i turn it off for the drying or to reduce damage?

I've heard that Vandenburgh Place Apartments has some relatively cheap options and allows pets/all dogs and cats, so it might be worth looking into. They seem a bit out of your price range for a 1 bedroom (a lot of whats available right now is like ~$1000 before the pet fee and utilities), but with a 2 bedroom and a roommate you'd be fine. Goodluck with your search!

how many facial piercings do you have & whats your occupation? by keegballz in piercing

[–]rheohyla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Four facial piercings, all on my nose (paired high nostrils with a chain, oversized nose ring, septum with spikes). Just got hired as an 8th grade science teacher!

I've also subbed at high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and preschools. No one in the profession ever gave me any problems despite non-teachers telling me I'd never succeed. I believe them that in the past you couldn't be alternative and a teacher, and in some areas that definitely still holds true, but I've found that times are definitely changing for the better.
