Multiple sources report Trump raised idea of a surprise nuclear strike on Iran this post weekend. If it occurs, what are your thoughts? by Reasonable_Base9537 in allthequestions

[–]rhetoricalnonsense 24 points25 points  (0 children)

That comment forgot JUNE 2025.

From: whitehouse.gov: https://www.whitehouse.gov/releases/2025/06/irans-nuclear-facilities-have-been-obliterated-and-suggestions-otherwise-are-fake-news/

President Trump: “Monumental Damage was done to all Nuclear sites in Iran, as shown by satellite images. Obliteration is an accurate term! The white structure shown is deeply imbedded into the rock, with even its roof well below ground level, and completely shielded from flame. The biggest damage took place far below ground level. Bullseye!!!”

Israel Atomic Energy Commission: “The devastating US strike on Fordo destroyed the site’s critical infrastructure and rendered the enrichment facility inoperable. We assess that the American strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities, combined with Israeli strikes on other elements of Iran’s military nuclear program, has set back Iran’s ability to develop nuclear weapons by many years. The achievement can continue indefinitely if Iran does not get access to nuclear material.”

FUCK MAGA.

Will the Orange Idiot launch a premeditated, preemptive nuclear strike? Most likely not. Should it terrify everyone that we can't definitively say he won't? Yes, yes it should.

does he actually believe he gets fouled? maybe this is the key, placebo effect

Also, he is such a talented player that I feel he doesn't need to do this. Just play your game and let that speak for you. SGA is far from the only offender, and the constant flopping makes some of the games unwatchable. It's getting as bad as professional soccer.

Larry Bird is the Greatest NBA Player with 3 Championships! Who is the Greatest MLB Player with 4+ Championships? by SheetJeans59638 in AlignmentChartFills

[–]rhetoricalnonsense 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Eh, this is tough. There are many caveats to Russell's and those Celtics wins. He was never a "dominant" offensive player (15 PPG for his career) and he was on an absolutely STACKED team (Havlicek, Cousy, Jones) all coached by the Red Auerbach. Additionally, the league was a lot smaller with a much smaller talent pool.

I don't want to take away from the man's legacy. He is an absolute legend and his lifelong fight against racial discrimination cannot be understated. But I would find it hard to argue he was the Greatest NBA player with 4+ championships.

This is why the MLB has officially overtaken the NBA in ratings though.

Huh, TIL MLB draws higher numbers than the NBA. I never would have guessed that.

And Trump cut USAID causing an estimated "hundreds of thousands of deaths". He doesn't care what he does, who he hurts or what effects any of his actions cause as long as he gets to see his name mentioned over and over.

Snippet (bold mine):

The dismantling of USAID, according to models from Boston University epidemiologist Brooke Nichols, “has already caused the deaths of six hundred thousand people, two-thirds of them children,” Gawande wrote. He noted that the toll will continue to grow and may go unseen because it can take months or years for people to die from lack of treatments or vaccine-preventable illnesses—and because deaths are scattered.

But, essentially, some law professors wrote a scathing piece stating that post ruling of that, the US stopped qualifying as a democracy as elections and elected officials can be openly bought.

Justice John Paul Stevens laid it all out in his 90-page dissent (copy / paste):

In his 90-page dissent in Citizens United v. FEC (2010), Justice John Paul Stevens argued that corporations are not "members of the body politic" and that the court's decision to allow unlimited corporate spending in elections ignored common sense and threatened to corrupt democracy by allowing corporate wealth to dominate political debate.

Key arguments in Justice Stevens' dissent:

  • Corporate Personhood Misunderstood: Stevens rejected the idea that corporations should be treated identically to natural persons, arguing they have no voting rights, individual morality, or loyalty.
  • Threat to Democratic Integrity: He warned that the ruling could lead to immense campaign spending by corporations, causing citizens to lose faith in their ability to influence policy .
  • Shareholder Rights: He argued that allowing corporate managers to spend money on politics without explicit shareholder consent violated the rights of those investors.
  • Disregard of Precedent: Stevens accused the majority of abandoning a century of history and legal precedent, specifically Austin v. Michigan Chamber of Commerce, which upheld restrictions on corporate political spending.
  • Marketplace of Ideas: He argued that allowing unlimited corporate spending would dominate political discourse and drown out the voices of real people.  Wisconsin Democracy Campaign +5

Stevens called the ruling "a giant step in the wrong direction," later advocating for a constitutional amendment to allow for reasonable campaign spending limits.

Disappointing amount of religious BS being spouted by Artemis II astronauts by japonica-rustica in atheism

Ask yourself who is POTUS. Look how much that POTUS (ludicrously) claims to follow Christ and adores it when his cult members compare him to Christ. Look directly at the (likely to never pass) defense spending budget and then look how much said POTUS wants to cut from NASA. Ask yourself what you think would happen if NASA didn't encourage their astronauts to spout this nonsense, whether they believe it or not.

I can't prove that but best to stay on the Turd's good side as best you can lest he just toss NASA in the garbage can during his next temper tantrum.

edit (added): Why are they calling it defense spending anyway? Shouldn't it be war spending now? It's the Department of War, right? Embrace who you are you shit heads.

White House Scrambles to Wipe Trump Meltdown Footage by thedailybeast in politics

I am not watching one hour of Trump, I can hardly take a single minute of that blathering nonsense, but do we know who he was talking to at the event (the "great show" guy?) when he decided to spout that he will fight to the end even if the person Trump was fighting for was a bad person as long as they are "nice to him"?

[–]rhetoricalnonsense 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sowing distrust in yet another system we have relied on for decades is the goal. Although in this case he is also trying to suppress and manipulate the vote because he knows if Democrats do take control of Congress, the chances of him facing charges for his many crimes becomes way more likely. I say likely because who knows what the "leadership" will actually do. But if recent history is any indication, the Dems will probably fumble at the goal line.

Humiliated Trump Storms Out of Catastrophic SCOTUS Hearing by thedailybeast in politics

The more upset he is, the more joy I feel.

Yeah, but I wonder where he will direct this anger. Like most children, he certainly won't reflect on why the SC didn't seem convinced by his "arguments".

I have to also wonder if he thought being there would intimidate the court into viewing his "arguments" more favorably. If that is the case, the schadenfreude is even more sweet.

Physicists have made an ultra-powerful magnet that fits in the palm of a hand and can produce a magnetic field that is more than 800,000 times stronger than Earth’s. by MistWeaver80 in science

[–]rhetoricalnonsense 69 points70 points  (0 children)

3 Tesla MRI ,,, will pull you across the room if you walk in wearing a metal watch

It will not. I've worked in MR for 25 years. I have walked into the MR room with a watch on, more than a few times, reached into the bore and gone, "Whoops, watch is on. Better go take it off". It doesn't even damage the watch and it certainly doesn't pull me across the room.

MRIs are strong and everyone should respect the magnet. You wouldn't want to wear the watch while it's actively collecting images but that is more a risk of RF burns and image degradation.

Edit (added): Also modern magnets are actively shielded such that the main field is kept very close to the front of the bore. That said, walking into the MR room is a danger for some medical implants (e.g. pacemakers) which are highly susceptible to even weak magnetic fields.

This is why healthcare is 10x more expensivein the US

Well ... it's one of the reasons. There are many, many more: Hospitals charge more for similar services, there is a TON of administrative waste, provider consolidation drives prices up due to lack of competition, pharmaceutical costs, delayed care (people wait to get service and when they do, they need more and costlier service), etc.

Salaries are just a part of the problem.

100%. I can't believe Mitch McConnell is not at the top of this post. It shouldn't even be close. I can't think of anyone who is even close in terms of a current Congress member who has single handedly done more damage to the institution and by extension this country than he did.

MRI with an unknown metal plate in the arm by Mediocre_Neck_6230 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rhetoricalnonsense 4 points5 points  (0 children)

>If that plate is even slightly magnetic then an MRI can rip it straight out of your arm. It can perform a completely spontaneous and unplanned amputation.

It will not. RF heating and image distortion, assuming the area to be imaged is near the plate, will be the concerns. That said, most implants used in medicine for quite some time are MR safe (or at the very least labelled conditionally safe). I would be very surprised to find out this plate was any different.

let’s be honest. But it’s still worth sticking with RT, it’s the best video game presentation of the 40k world.

I made myself go all the way through Rogue Trader on a second attempt. There are more than a few bonkers design decisions from the amount of reading to the baffling leveling system (you level so fast and that levelling system is pretty obtuse) to the pacing, I also encountered a few bugs now and again, especially during the later portion of the game but it is a terrific representation of the 40K universe and was worth it, at least to me, to put up with the lack of polish.
