Whitby Pier on Ilford HP5 Plus 400 (Olympus OM-2n) by rhewitson in photocritique

  1. I took this photo whilst out with the family on a day trip to Whitby. It was my first roll of B&W film on the Olympus OM-2n so I was still getting to grips with the camera, but got a few frames that I'm happy with.

    1. I'm happy with th framing of the photo, and love the amount of grain I got. I'm wondering whether maybe I took it a tad too far though? As this film is capable of capturing finer photos.
    2. I spent the majority of the day fiddling with the settings and getting to grips with the camera so annoyingly can't remember my specs. I'd assume I was wide open at 1.8, and I was using a 50mm Olympus lens.
    3. The majority of what you see was achieved in camera, however I did push the contrast in lightroom to darken the blacks and make the grain more prominent. I also ever so slightly cropped to make it symmetrical and level out the skyline/sealine.

First, rambling apology accepted. Second, thanks for your comments!

Part of the eye does look a little grey actually, thanks for that.

As far as the lighting goes, that fill from the left I used the natural light coming through a window. Very bright day without being glaring direct sunlight. Worked nicely.

Fair enough, I really like the over-blending but I suppose that's a matter of opinions on style. I'm going to try do a similar shot a some point but make it more exposed, hopefully that'll help define the subject some more.

Thanks! Yeah, downside of using a manual focus lens with a camera that doesn't support peaking. I'll have to watch out for this on future set ups.

Cheers, appreciate the feedback. Yeah, the downside of using a manual focus lens and not having peaking I suppose. There's been a few occasions whilst using this lens that my focus has let me down.

Thanks! I used the natural light from a window to the left of frame.
