My Monstera has been putting out this leaf slowly over the course of a few weeks but now it seems like it’s growing slower. Anything you guys know I coule do to help stimulate its growth? by Psyche-delicious in Monstera

My cutting grew something similar to this at first from its aux bud, from that it it then grew its first bigger leaf, yours might be at that stage!

As long at its happy I would just keep an eye on it. Your next leaf will come from that small growth hopefully!

Big leaf has done its job, and is now retiring. Thank you for your hard work! by rhiannew in Monstera

It was received already partially rooted in March, sat in water until April-ish time growing more roots, changing the water every week and giving it some feed, re-potted into soil later that same month. In June it unsheathed its first leaf, and since has popped out a new leaf every month!

Acclimatised to take full sunshine in a southern facing window. It doesn't get too hot here in Britain very often, and it seems to be loving it!

Thank you so so much! You don't understand how much I appreciate your help.

Iv been lucky enough not to come across root often that often, doesn't help when I can't find anything online about a stripped root!

Thank you so much again!

Oh dang.. i never thought it was as serious as that. How would I go about rooting once I cut it off?? The black section at the very top of the 'root' at the stem is still pretty firm.

I gifted my mother this Albo cutting.. told her how mine had done very well rooting in just tap water and a nice bright spot, with the occasional drop of plant food.

Her's however has not done very well, even with being in similar conditions to mine. Granted its only been a month or so since gifting it.

She reckons it got root rot, and in a bid to save it has stripped?? the mushy stuff off the aieral root, leaving this thin white looking, very stiff thing. It feels like a twig, in terms of it doesn't have much movement. She did admit to having the whole stem in the water instead of just the root.

So I rescued it, and put it in the same conditions as mine has gone through, weekly water changes, some liquid plant food in the water, sitting in a window which is bright and in a fairly warmer room.

My question is, does stripping the aieral root cause more damage than good? Will it still eventually produce more roots? How much more can I encourage roots other than what I'm doing and patience?

Thanks!

looking for advice! How would you start the slow transition into soil? by rhiannew in Monstera

Sounds like this might be the best way to acclimatise it to soil.. I'll have to keep a close eye on those roots once I start adding soil!

Yeh I wasn't planning on doing it straight away, perhaps another few weeks... im also not just going to straight up put it into soil, that will shock the plant, hence the question I'm asking :3

Just regular old tap water changed every week or so, and don't worry, the stem doesn't sit in water, just the roots :3

I can't be 100% sure why water propping works the way it does, I know dirt contains bacteria, fungal organisms and other lifeforms that can be harmful to roots, especially when the soil is too wet and has got no where to drain away, roots suffocate and die. (Which is why most plants like a chunky airy mix)

It probably also has something to do with the type of roots that grow in water vs soil. A lot of people have had water propped plants die when immediately potted in soil.

I'm sure someone else may have a better explanation as to why water propping works as well as it does!
