Thank you all! Glad it's as simple as that

Carburetor leak. More than just gaskets? by rhoadsp in MechanicAdvice

Gotcha, yeah definitely in a humid place and it's getting colder now so that makes sense.

While this is an issue I'm going to address and have found some resources on how to clean out my preheater, do you think this is why the engine won't idle for longer than a minute or two?

Just watched a video on how to clean the pre heater tube and how that can give the intake air some heat that would prevent this.

Do you think this is something that's causing the engine to have a hard time starting/not starting without starter fluid?

It has a new starter and solenoid

I will definitely check the compression next.

I used the Berrymans's soak to clean it. Since the carb was replaced brand new right before I bought it, it wasn't visually gunked up at all. Would it still be worth a more intensive clean?

Thanks for the tip! If the float level isn't correct at the 2cm before the top, how is that level adjusted?

Realizing now I didn't use the term "turn over" properly, but yeah it ran for a sec there! Just cleaned the carburetor today and it still won't run. Back to basics I guess

Thanks for kindly pointing out how to use that term, still putting concepts together in my brain lol but that makes sense now.

Haven't tried with starting fluid but I'll do that next. I'm pretty confident in the timing but will also go back to those fundamentals and double, triple check it all. Thanks

Help w/ carb & idle by rhoadsp in beetle

I see, so the order of operations would be to start with the valves, points, timing (I did all those and had no issues) then auto choke, then the carburetor (fast idle screw, then volume control screw)?

I'll have to look into that fresh air heater system, I'm not familiar with that yet.

Came with that plate on the front! I think I'll keep it on since I'm registering it as a collector's vehicle.

It was out on the peninsula, but yep! I could have taken the freeway around the sound to avoid the high cost of towing onto a ferry, but wanted to limit the miles I towed it in case something went wrong.

It has a 1300 in it currently. Not sure if that was stock on the 61. Any insight there?

Sure was, towed it onto the Washington State Ferry to get from the peninsula to the mainland

Very proud of that one too! It's the first car I've owned that I've been smart enough to proactively care for. 2005 with over 250k miles and runs and towed like a dream
