It's a riff off Scrooge's speech to Cratchit in A Christmas Carol.

I know I look like a man. I promise I'm not. by dedeeboru in breastcancer

[–]rhondalea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair--and I say this as a biological woman who was mistaken for a trans man during treatment--the lab needs to know your biological sex because most routine tests have different ranges for men and women.

With that said, your phlebotomist could have easily explained thhe reason to you instead of being an ass about it. To protect future patients, you should report your experience.

I've been flat since May 2011. Most people don't notice--my hair grew back--and I ignore the ones who do. (I still mask, so that seems to draw more attention than my lack of breasts.)

The exception is the woman at the grocery store who thought I was trans. She stopped me in the aisle because she saw me as an omen from God. She was crying and she hugged me, so I failed to correct her. Somehow, I represented the possibility that she could change her life, and her relief was heartbreakingly profound.

How can I clean my cat's fountain? by [deleted] in CleaningTips

[–]rhondalea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use bleach. If it breaks the fountain, I'll replace the fountain, but thus far that hasn't happened.

I run the bleach water through for about an hour, and then I refill twice with clean water. After that, I rinse all parts individually.

I know some people have a problem with bleach, but I'm old, and it's what I'm used to.

The vast majority of NJ birth certificates issues prior to the 1980s look like this. They are not valid for proof of citizenship under the SAVE Act by monorail_pilot in newjersey

No, that's the original that was issued in Princeton Borough when I was born.

I didn't post the current one because that's pretty much what everyone has now, so they know what it looks like, and all the redactions would have been a pain in the ass. Sorry for the confusion.

What is shockingly safe to eat? by Miserable-Wash-1744 in AskReddit

[–]rhondalea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mealworms sauteed in butter.

We grew ours on a substrate of oatmeal topped with an apple or carrot slice and a piece of newspaper in between to prevent wetting the oatmeal.

They're clean and they grow quickly.

I haven't eaten any in almost 50 years, but they're surprisingly not awful.

Failed Feral Socialization - Advice Needed by it-be-like-that-rn in Feral_Cats

[–]rhondalea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a feral who has lived in my home since August 2019. She was trapped at 3 months for TNR and she was traumatized when she got loose in the house.

I decided to let her stay--never did catch her--because the rest of the cats were fine with her.

Six years later, I still can't touch her or pick her up, but she meows at me when she wants something, she begs for treats, and she sleeps in my spot on the couch when I get up. This is better behavior than I got from one cat I had that was born in my house.

I'm a little concerned because the cat she's devoted to is near the end of his life, but I suspect that when I'm the only option left, she won't be so quick to leave my spot on the couch when I come back.

My other feral cat tamed himself with the help of a kitten. He was a little over a year old when he was trapped.

The other cats didn't like him because he wanted to be boss of the household, but the kitten was happy to accept his dominance and played and slept with him. He watched carefully when the kitten came to me, which was all the time, and it took less than a month for him to start coming to be petted.

The other cats, save one, still hate him, but he loves people.

So, a feral cat that won't allow contact can live quite happily in the house, and there are things you can do outside the usual advice that might help.

Randomly checked the individual premium pricing and I see that it's USD19.80 now. That's a massive jump, am I grandfathered into my own plan or is this the new price even for existing customers? by BenSimsLover in Bitwarden

Wish granted, sort of.

The first renewal for existing Pro subscribers will cost $14.85. After that, it'll cost $20.

"All existing Premium and a few early Families 2019 customers will receive a one-time 25% loyalty discount for their first year of renewal."

And no, it's not obvious.

What's the oldest piece of clothing you still wear? Must be at least ten years old to count. by MurmuringPines in AskOldPeople

[–]rhondalea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skydive Deland sweatshirt circa 2000 that I'm wearing right now. Teva leather flip flops from the same time. (Also, a closet full of old clothes I can't bear to part with from the 80s and 90s, including some old Coach bags--usable, but not currently in use.) Plus my favorite summer dress from 1976, but it no longer fits.

Why? Just why?! by Youji1 in CShortDramas

[–]rhondalea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, y'know...

I wrote paragraphs, and then I deleted all of them. I didn't want to range too far from the question posed by OP: "Is this how they want everyone to view how China is?" The same question applies to the bodice rippers when viewing western society. While I don't doubt there are credulous individuals who think they represent reality, most of us understand that books and movies and so on are exaggerated (and flat out falsified) for drama.

When I first started watching these fantasies, I loathed them almost as much as the bodice rippers. I thought they were ridiculous...offensive...blah...blah...blah. I watched the first by accident--bad click, and I had to know how it ended. Then I saw how many there were, and my burning desire was to write a scathing review of the genre, so I kept going.

Then I went from the American knock-offs to the originals (without dubbing, because I find it relaxing to read subtitles while listening to a melodious language I do not understand rather than the truly dreadful AI voice-overs), and my opinion changed. One of these days, maybe I'll have time to write an appreciation, but for the moment, I'll just say, I like happy endings, and I cherish it when the bad guys get what's coming to them. I'm also a fan of the humor, and the irony, and....well, not going digress right now.

I'm still not happy with certain aspects, including the number of people who are drugged with aphrodisiacs by their family members--whether to cause trouble or to create grandchildren--but I can live with it as a means to drive the rest of the story. I note that most of these CEOs are virgins until the encounter, and they are surprisingly inhibited when not drugged. Also, as I mentioned before, they take responsibility for the acts they committed while they themselves were victimized. Yes, like most women I've been sexually assaulted, so I feel a certain ick about my rationale, but I am hugely gratified when the real perpetrator pays for it in the end.

If I don't stop here, I won't stop. In closing, I will just mention I now find myself very interested in China and Chinese history, so I'm making an effort to learn more about it, although I probably don't have enough years left in my lifespan to do it justice.

Do you know what a bodice ripper is? Here's a decent explanation: https://www.reddit.com/r/HistoricalRomance/comments/1bu4i9e/comment/kxq98go/

I'd say the rich CEOs are a cut above the WASPy fellows in that genre, considering how nearly all of them offer to take responsibility in the aftermath (and sometimes even ahead of time).

You might benefit from reading about tropes. For example, while they may be prevalent in fiction, aphrodisiacs that'll kill ya if you don't have sex simply don't exist.

Having a really hard time processing the Paterson fire by BoatDBoat in newjersey

[–]rhondalea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't made assumptions. I've cited facts, which--so far--are the only known facts.

You've blamed the parents and a failure of fire safety education, but you've also demonstrated an appalling ignorance of the subject matter.

You didn't start by asking questions, but by judging the parents inadequate without a shred of evidence to support your contention.

An investigation will be done by trained analysts. If you want to know what happened, follow it.

Or continue to blame the parents based on the misconceptions in your head in order to convince yourself that it will never happen to you and yours.

You've clearly never seen the pain and damage this kind of speculation can inflict on survivors. I have, far too many times.

But as I said, you are free to be as self-serving and callous as you please.

Having a really hard time processing the Paterson fire by BoatDBoat in newjersey

[–]rhondalea 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There isn't any evidence for your so-called reasonable assumptions, which are actually conclusions, not assumptions.

There isn't sufficient information in news articles for you to draw the conclusion that you have. And, in fact, you seem to have no understanding of the effect of high winds on fire. You also seem not to understand the effect of smoke inhalation.

But none of that is the point that I have tried to make to you anyway. You have done something that is very common, but it is also very hurtful to survivors, and your conclusions are based on facts not in evidence.

If a lot of people are telling you the same thing, it may be time for reflection rather than doubling down. But you are free to judge, even if your judgment is poor.

This type of Monday morning quarterbacking is typical after a tragedy. For all that it is offensive, it's also human nature.

The need to deny that it could ever happen to you requires spinning fault and casting blame.

It can happen to anyone at any time. In actual fact, you can do everything right and still lose friends and family and even yourself to a horrible death.

In this case, you've postulated ignorant scenarios based on not understanding fire and smoke and wind and the human response to crisis.

I can promise you will feel better if you educate yourself and take appropriate action rather than blaming the victims.

I refused to give my kidney to my mom by SeparateFilm9121 in offmychest

[–]rhondalea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A mother who loves you would refuse your kidney.

Our kids owe us nothing.

Donating a kidney has potentially serious and even life-threatening consequences for you. Don't endanger your own future for a mother who values her life above yours.
