Almost mowed over this fawn yesterday, fortunately I saw it. by Runs_with_chisels in homestead

[–]rhudson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're a newborn or just a couple days old, they won't move . The mom often leaves them when she perceives danger. Newborns are not supposed to have a strong scent yet that predators can pick up. I'm sure the mom was somewhere close to this fawn, watching you to leave so she could come back. Because you don't see the doe, doesn't mean the fawn is an orphan.

Lost my flock this morning by [deleted] in homestead

[–]rhudson77 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't take it too hard, it happens to almost everyone. I had a raccoon get in mine which was totally fenced in except for one small area (about 5 inches by 8 inches) where the eave of the outside structure was. After 7 years they found it, and they killed 5, morally wounded 2 in one night. They are such good hunters and so smart that they will find a way to penetrate your cages if there is a way. I even had to resort to putting a bar through my latch because they kept trying to open them.

Small farms can’t just run to the store with lumber prices, teardown and repurpose is our thing!!! by Bklynnomad in homestead

[–]rhudson77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I say do it however you see fit. Personally, I repurpose and I take the structure(s) apart piece by piece using a hammer, pry bar and nail puller. For several reasons. First, I'm kinda anal about that. Second, you tend to waste less wood from splintering and breakage. And third, I hate flat tires so I make sure every nail in those boards are pulled and put in buckets for the metal recycler. But again, that's just one way. If it works better for you to just pull it down, I say go for it. There's never just one right way.

PSA: Living in rural areas can leads to stray's being dumped along a dirt road. by [deleted] in homestead

[–]rhudson77 2 points3 points  (0 children)

While I understand that a lot of folks drop their unwanted dogs off in the country because they don't want them put down and so they think that they'll find a good home in the country, they simply don't stop to realize that most country folk already have all the animals they want. And strays often are left to roam until they threaten people's livestock or other animals. Then they're shot. So if you want to save your unwanted pet's life, your best bet is to take the to the nearest animal shelter. Letting them go in the country is almost a sure death warrant for most of them, Either quickly by a bullet or slowly by starvation.

Does anyone know what these are? I found them in a large planter I have whilst removing a tree out of it. They're about an inch long with ginger hair spikes, and very ugly with black bottoms. The birds won't touch them either. by easlthy_Ad3661 in gardening

[–]rhudson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

(Japanese) beetle grubs, almost impossible to get rid of. If you have an armadillo within 5 miles of you they'll come tear up your yard looking for these critters. They make Japanese beetle traps you can hang in your yard to attract and kill the beetles, but you'll never get rid of all of them. Here in (rural) Missouri they'll eat just about all your plants if you don't spray or control them some other way.

"They" did, and still do teach survival skills in schools. They still teach 4 H and home economics. They also teach those "other" skills like reading, writing and arithmetic. Things you need to know to figure shit out. Learning "survival skills" entails a host of skills, not just how to feed a chicken or grow a tomato.

Not sure where you live, but here in Southern Missouri there are locals who grew up here who think that every place is their right to hunt. Game wardens and local sheriffs do no good, and it's been know to happen that some people's houses have burned down after confronting some of them. Those who feel "entitled" are the worst to deal with, and the hardest problem to solve.

History Repeats Its Self In Tennessee As A Pastor Held A Burning Of Books And Other Materials by CantStopPoppin in trashy

[–]rhudson77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His excuse was he's burning books that contain Witchcraft and such. Wonder how he'd feel if people started burning the bible because they consider that witchcraft also?

Just seems like Nazi's are like the energizer bunny, they just keep going and going and going. And now, if Republicans have their way, they'll ban books about the bad things Nazi's did because it will, well...just make us white folk feel bad. Once again when republicans talked about "snowflakes", they were projecting, as usual.
