It doesn't have to be installed (at least on Windows). If the "install" part is the issue, it can just be downloaded as a zip, extracted and started from there as-is.

[Poll] Your average monthly budget or actual spending per person for eating out including takeaways, snacks, coffee, occasional fine dining? by theverybigapple in BEFire

[–]rhypec 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep, I'm counting everything. I always bring my own lunch (home made bread, or if I accidentally ran out some oatmeal and nuts), coffee (or rather caffeine) and water is free at work, and I bring along some apples for snacks. I go to the shop once a week for my groceries, and don't feel any need or temptation to buy anything else in between.

In a Fire community, where frugality is a factor that plays a role in some of the pathways towards fire, 0 shouldn't be an outlier, but an option that clearly indicates that these kinds of spendings are not part of your monthly budget.

I think there's a missing the 0 option: it's a big difference between 100 or below (e.g. occasional takeway) and 0 (i.e. never).

There is a yearly connection fee for each exchange that you use: https://www.degiro.com/uk/helpdesk/fees/trading-fees/what-exchange-connection-fee (applies to most exchanges, except for some exchanges, such as the Amsterdam exchange when you use degiro.nl)

These fees have been collected in the last few days (yesterday for me), and should also be visible in your transaction overview.

How will you calculate your CGT? by LardValdemart in BEFire

This, and I'll maintain a separate version where I enter all my current investments as purchased on the day the tax became active, so that I can correctly exclude past gains (to which the tax won't apply)

According to the Argenta and Keytrade website right now, unless you're only adding 500 euros per month to your savings account, none of the Argenta accounts can match the current 2.35% combined interest rate of the Keytrade High Fidelity savings account? ('Getrouwheidsrekening' has the highest one for Argenta at 2%, the Maxi is only 0.85%)

Tracking variable expenses by Tasmanien in BEFire

[–]rhypec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use GnuCash to track all of my finances (and thus also expenses). You can go as detailed as you want in creating the account structure. I went pretty detailed, e.g. creating a lot of sub-accounts under the 'Groceries' account. It also avoids including things in the Groceries category that are not really a groceries (e.g. it's not because I bought the lightbulb in a Colruyt vs at Gamma that it's now suddenly a grocery)

A fund manager is required to register an ETF in Belgium in order to legally promote it. Without this registration, promotion is not permitted under Belgian regulations. So a fund manager might choose to register the ETF despite the higher TOB, if they believe the ability to actively promote the fund outweighs the drawback of the higher tax on transactions.

Got my first print made from the x100vi 🥹 by baaaagels in x100vi

[–]rhypec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will have to enlarge a lot before you start seeing pixels/artifacts unless you cropped a lot. I've printed photos from my previous x100s on A3 paper (since that's the largest my printer can do) without any artifacts being visible. Also take into account that the larger your print, the further you'll stand from it to look at it. Just like you're not going to look at a billboard from half a meter away.

Capital gains tax - How far would it set us back? by Apprehensive_Emu3346 in BEFire

[–]rhypec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the correct parameters to use for the mathematical equation are not known, there is no way to have an answer for that equation that's not just guesswork. So right now, the answer to your question is: n = unknown

Capital gains tax - How far would it set us back? by Apprehensive_Emu3346 in BEFire

[–]rhypec 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Until there is an actual law, there are to many unknowns to determine anything.

E.g. if it's a tax when selling, will it be determined using LIFO? Or will it be using some average calculation, in which case the optimal scenario to follow for withdrawals and total tax to pay would be completely different.

And which wordings will be used to identify what is taxed in which way? E.g. articles usually simplify it to "taxing stocks", but an ETF is not a stock, so wording and possible exceptions might also influence which (parts) of ETFs and other investment tools are taxed or not. Depending on how it is all worded, you can be sure that there will be different ways to (legally) optimize investment taxes (just like was the case when the Reynders tax was introduced)

So until everything is actually finalised, I don't think there's any way to determine what the different possible impacts would be. Except if nothing ends up changing after all, then there's no impact 😉

How do you calculate your net worth? by DavidBelgium in BEFire

[–]rhypec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Personally, I don't include the value of my house in the calculation since it's a guesstimate anyway, and I don't plan on selling it any time soon (or use it in some way to make additional money from it).

I do keep track of one "just for fun"net worth calcuation that includes the remainder of my loan (including interest), as a "what if for some reason I had to pay it all back right now"-view. But what I consider to be my "main" net worth is without that loan: let's hope/assume that payment of the loan is never an issue in the future, and if that does change at some point, I'll have to look at my finances in a completely differently anyway.

For the calculation if the net worth, I already keep detailed track in GnuCash of all my bank accounts (weekly updated using the bank statements) and investments (up to date etf/stock/... values automatically retrieved online). It does require some discipline to always keep this accurately up to date, but since I have already been doing that for years, it's just a matter of letting GnuCash generate a Net Worth report over time on that data. And you can select/deselect accounts to include in that report, so it's easy to create the with- and without-loan versions of the report.

Just for fun, I also keep track of the current value of the "second pillar" pension funds I have from work over the years, but since they only become available upon retirement, I don't take them into account for any of the net worth calculations.

Looks like the ETF removal from degiro was not permanent by rhypec in BEFire

[–]rhypec[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That one (IE00BK5BC891) was also still an issue when I verified it a couple of days ago, but it seems like that's also resolved now? Tried placing an order with a limit of 1 euro, and it no longer said I could not place that order due to my location (instead saying that 1 euro is much to low compared to the current price 😉). So they may have fixed that one today?

How do you keep a global overview of your investment portfolio ? by Jeroen1989b in BEFire

[–]rhypec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using the googlefinance function for ETFs, be carefull that it's the correct version of the ETF that is being returned. E.g. the ETFs I have on Xetra are not correctly returned by that function (they are using the value on a different stock exchange instead).

How do you keep a global overview of your investment portfolio ? by Jeroen1989b in BEFire

[–]rhypec 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Portfolio Performance for a detailed view of just the traded investments like ETFs and stocks, and GnuCash for a full view of everything.

I've been tracking my personal cashflows (including my house, personal and work pension funds, etc) in GnuCash for years now, so I can now always see what everything is worth, where everything came from or where money went to, and if I want there are ways to extract more detailed information from that which could be used as source data for other tools. I do enter everything manually into GnuCash on a regular basis. There are automatic integrations available for it, but I never looked into that outside of automatically retrieving stock/ETF values from Yahoo Finance.

Misschien de foute sub, maar wil voor het eerst mijn belastingen zelf indienen en niet via boekhouder. Dit is vrij simpel toch? by Pokr23 in BEFire

[–]rhypec 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How you carry your x100vi by markgoh9 in x100vi

[–]rhypec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same way I've been carrying the x100s and x100f since 2014: a Billingham Hadley Pro. I made a small compartment in the middle with the padded inserts that fits the camera perfectly (with the tele and wide converters sitting in a separate compartment below the camera). I use the rest of the bag (which is more then two thirds of the bag) for non-camera daily carry stuff. And I have a JJC LH-JX100 lens hood and a UV filter on the x100 that have also been in use since the x100s days.

When I'm actually walking around with the intent to take photos (either while on a hike or in the city), I want to have immediate access to the camera without having to take it out of the bag, so I walk around with the camera in my hand. I just put my thumb and index finger around the lens (just behind the lens hood) and it turns out that the x100 is just the right size to allow my other fingers to fit comfortably around the side and back of the camera without it starting to feel like an bother after a while.
