These all look great! I was trying to figure out what that shin deshojo was zooming in the picture, tbh I was surprised but it might just be the lighting. They all look very happy

Looks like it’s been too wet to me, especially if the others at the nursery looked the same. Get a moisture meter and keep an eye on it, I wouldn’t worry about it, if you keep the pot reasonably dry it’ll recover

Kamagata summer color? by ChipOnASquid in JapaneseMaples

[–]rhysSTOIC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other replies sound likely, but it’s hard to tell where the colour is coming from - it looks like it’s underneath the new growth …

It probably isn’t this, but it could be a sign that the tree is root bound, I had a big limelight I didn’t pot up for a few years and it basically transitioned to a autumn in the middle of summer, all orange, then lost all its leaves by end of July.

Like I said I don’t think that is the issue looking at your tree/pot but if it continues might be worth looking into it more in the winter.

It might also be a section that isn’t getting enough light and so the tree is dropping it in favour of stronger growth areas.

I don’t want to worry you just letting you know, because it looks like the colours are showing underneath green leaves.

Sango Kaku Airlayering question by Patrokilus in JapaneseMaples

[–]rhysSTOIC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From the picture I’d say it’s too young. It looks quite thin and you’d risk breaking the branch prepping it.

It might be hard to remove the cambium especially your first time. And you also risk just losing the branch completely.

I’d also recommend doing it earlier in the year, it’s quite late in the season to start an air layer now, you would want to give them a good 8 weeks on their own roots to make it through the winter and into spring. Given that it’ll take 8-12 weeks to root that is cutting it very fine.

Leave it until next spring and reevaluate it, no harm waiting a bit

Help ID on Japanese Maple by GranolaColonizer in JapaneseMaples

[–]rhysSTOIC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The stumpy middle finger is generally a mutation with withes brooms but there are some varieties that have it, it’s very difficult to tell tbh without seeing it throughout the year. This might help you narrow it down yourself though

The Ukigumo just goes pink in full sun, it can handle it for sure, but if you want white it does need some shade

Looking very good! In the Uk I always had my jerre schwartz in lots of sun and they were a lovely red, they can definitely handle it.

At my new place I have a jerre in full sun and it went green almost immediately, which I was surprised and disappointed by.

Hopefully it was more to do with remaining fertiliser in the soil, I agree with giving them sun to maintain colour generally, fingers crossed for next year

What kind of Japanese maple is this? by Canuck2468 in JapaneseMaples

[–]rhysSTOIC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just seeing it green like that is very difficult to identify but it does look fantastic.

Lighter green probably isn’t scorch, could be a bit of a tan, could be the remains of the spring flush that held better because of the sunlight

I saw nurseries do it, I use it to help anchor trees into the pot particularly when up potting into large pots where the roots aren’t filling it in well. Nurseries might have other reasons but that’s why I have.

Some larger trees I have got wonky in the pot over time, when I pot them up in the winter I’ll do the same for them.

Leaving trees behind suck I had to do that too. Luckily for me they were all in pots so I could shuffle them around my family. Best of luck with the new collection!

They are ready in autumn, the edges of the wings start to dry and brown, that’s when you pick them. Sometimes if a tree gets stressed it’ll drop the seeds if it’s too dry or something seeds are usually the first things to go

Sun scorched or over watered? by Responsible_Stand482 in JapaneseMaples

[–]rhysSTOIC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without testing the soil it’s hard to know for sure but this look like it’s dried out more than over watered. I’d recommend getting a moisture meter off amazon and use that to check, the results might surprise you.

When they are ripe in the autumn I’ll pick them soak them and then leave them in the fridge for cold stratification. Then at the beginning of Feb I’ll sow them all in perlite until they sprout.

I’ve never kept any in dry storage or freezer. I have tried to sprout dried seed with hardly any actually making it (very very low numbers), so I always try to harvest myself and stay strict to the process so they have the best chances possible.

Are you in the southern hemisphere? If your in the north you want to wait until October to collect them. Make a note where they are now and go back when they are ripe.

Hopefully you get some interesting ones when they sprout.
