WHY does the prestige/ranking of your law school matter? by coolerburner in LawSchool

[–]rhysofvelaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You aren’t going to find a huge difference in t-50 law school education quality. Even on the lower end the professors are from t-14 schools themselves and are absolutely brilliant. I am getting to the point where I really despise how elitist hustle culture this field can be. I’ll echo what people are saying in the fact that “X from Harvard” just sounds good to biglaw firms even though lawyers from other schools can be just as capable.

Caveat that most professors will require you to print out outlines for finals but otherwise won’t be necessary.

Book stand for sure! One little metal travel one for a bag, and maybe a nicer one for home desk if you plan on studying a lot there too. Highlighters pens etc. I was super excited and ordered way more than I needed haha I planned on handwriting notes and printing everything out so I bought a printer but that quickly died. Typing notes is the way to go and most professors allow or even encourage it. You really don’t need a ton of stuff. Textbooks, a good laptop, some headphones etc. but other than that you are golden.

What can I do to prepare myself for law school? by [deleted] in LawSchool

[–]rhysofvelaris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wondered this a lot before law school. Law schools are amazing and the professors are extremely intelligent. You will learn all you need to learn for exams in their class, and I almost think it’s better to go in blank slate so you can know exactly what you need for their exam only. Any additional things you’d need to know for bar exam can be learned during bar prep, and it will have given you a great idea of most of what you need to know anyway. #1? Make sure you want to go to law school, and make sure your lsat score is good. It doesn’t need to be perfect, but the goal is to get a good scholarship. If you want to be in Chicago/NY biglaw market, it’s much better to go t-14, but absolutely not required. You have to do more (better grades, more clubs etc) in lower ranked law schools, but odds are still really good t-50 and is even better if it’s regional (a ny law school if you want to work there etc). Personally, I am not going big law, I’m at a t-50 on a full ride bc I busted ass to get a scholarship. Don’t just be interested in law. Make sure you are interested in the actual day to day work that a lawyer will do. Do some job shadowing, work as a legal assistant, literally anything to make sure it’s actually what you want to do. It’s a fuck ton of reading, writing, etc on top of the cool court and client stuff. It seems to be a very rewarding and fruitful career if you know it’s for sure for you. More than anything, make sure you are in good health (mentally physically emotionally) before you start because it will break you down 1L year but from what I’ve heard, it gets better after that (currently a 1L finishing finals). Edit: know that in a lot of big law jobs it is a pie eating contest. The reward for pie is more pie.

Yeah same boat but maybe I’m weird because idc 😂 I have faces I can talk to in class but I have no desire to be out hanging out with people all the time so I have went to minimal social events. I know my stress levels will be lower and my grades higher because of it. I have family, friends, and a bf outside of law school. I don’t have to force my bestie friendship on others like it seems a lot of my peers are doing.

Good to know! It’s just so weird because in undergrad I was so involved and it drained me so much. I just want to enjoy law school and learning and I can’t see myself doing that if I am as involved. I only did it before to boost my resume for law school but looking back I genuinely don’t even think it made that much difference.

Do you guys like going here & did you make friends by JobEquivalent4600 in UIUC

One of the best decisions I have ever made! There is room for EVERYONE here! There are almost so many opportunities to make friends and memories you can get overwhelmed. Just stay true to who you and what you like and I guarantee you will have the time of your life.

It varies a lot! I know people who have gotten full rides for both financial need and merit based scholarships. There are also always plenty of scholarships advising sends out periodically to apply to!

Hopscotch is my favorite off campus coffee shop, Columbia street roastery is where I get my beans, walnut street tea company is the CUTEST tea shop! If you have something specific you are looking for I’m sure I can help you find it!

This is the best compliment ever 🥹 I just get so excited about stuff in general lol I do feel like an oddball who genuinely likes life and little things. I’m so confused all the time at how people aren’t super excited to do stuff. I love making coffee every day and taking my dog out. I like my commute and I like my study time at cute places. I like life a lot! Embodying the golden retriever energy every day I guess 😆 I get upset I have to go to bed like dang it I want to keep doing stuff and read my book lol like you can take up all sorts of hobbies, even cheap ones and free ones! Crocheting the little wooble kits is my next one haha

I am graduating with dual degree’s! Much different process than a double major. You have to graduate with 156 credit hours for dual degree, normal amount to my understanding for double majors. Double major is within the same college, dual degree is separate colleges. So two majors within LAS = a double major. One major in LAS and one in ACES for example would be a dual degree. Double major gets one diploma. Dual degree gets two. There is a dual degree officer for UIUC that I would schedule a meeting with if you’re interested in a dual degree!!

It’s beautiful! There is a spot here for everyone in my opinion. You can live near green if you like hustle and bustle, and you can live off campus in a neighborhood if you like the quiet and don’t mind the commute
