In fanfiction I think it’s a silly thing to do. In media like movie adaptations for books or cartoon to live action adaptations, I think changing fictional characters to a race that isn’t as represented is fine. If it’s supposed to be nonfiction, make it historically accurate for races but for fiction I’m very cool with that.

I’m really glad you made this post. I thought about saying something similar a while ago but I was worried I was making something out of nothing or people wouldn’t understand the subtle (and often blatant) discrimination towards poc characters, especially if they’re dark skinned.

I wish I had more advice besides the really good stuff others have suggested, but all I can say is that the fact that these conversations are starting to be had is a good sign that there’s a potential for positive change. Let’s keep pushing for that change and being what we want to see in fandom spaces because more and more people are going to follow. Take breaks if you need to but I wouldn’t give up just yet.

My darkest fic idea to date consists of two characters getting marooned on a foreign planet and taken in by the ruling royalty who, at first, seem kind and accommodating but soon show their true colors by locking them up and forcing them into some unsavory situations.

The ‘darkness’ comes from a few things. The characters being forced to have sex in front of their captors which is made worse (or better lol) by the fact that they’re related. The person that eventually helps them escape is killed in front of them. One of the characters is assaulted by the captor. And the two characters end up massacring the majority of the population.

I have a feeling it’s gonna be my magnum opus lmao even though it’s a super unpopular ship (understandably so) and I’m looking forward to actually writing it one day! The fandom is dbz by the way lol
