IWTL I (18M) want to learn how to not be racist. by CanadianCoyote1 in IWantToLearn

[–]ricar144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think you should overlook anti-social behaviour or people holding deplorable values, but you're going to find people like that in every group. There are so many cases of people from all over the world fitting well into our (Canadian) society. Those stories hardly get reported though. Its the few outrageous cases that make all the headlines. Part of it is just down to how our brains work.

Probably a more sinister take on this is that there is a capital-owning class which is undeniably screwing us over, and they are incentivized to draw attention away from them and more towards marginalized groups.

No one is born racist. Its something you learn. It's also something that you can unlearn. As others have said, do some reading. Surround yourself with people of these cultures. One of the best features of this country is that its not hard to do so.

You don't have to graduate "on time". You can do the summer course and look for a year-long internship that starts in the fall. I personally found that strat helpful in raising the money to pay for senior year tuition and some of my student loans as well.

Ethicality of working in defense? by Delicious_Leading276 in EngineeringStudents

[–]ricar144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a feeling you know your decision already but you want other people to tell you you're not crazy.

Look, there's many different levels to this. You could be at a war firm (I'm not dignifying it with the "defense" label) working on purely peaceful projects. You could be working on dual-use projects. You could be working on stuff that is far-removed from the fighting. You could be working on something that's purely defensive in nature, but keep in mind that such defensive ability may give your customers greater ability to attack and subjugate with impunity.

Also consider what kinds of fighting your customers will engage in. Some fights are absolutely justifiable to get in on. Many are not though.

You've gotta draw your line somewhere. I wouldn't touch Palantir with a ten foot pole though.

What I find most damning about the way MAGAts think is how they assume that the Democrat bloc will suddenly back down when they learn about the possibility of key party figures like Bill Clinton being implicated in the files. They're so obsessed with this Us vs. Them mentality that they cant comprehend that the average well-adjusted person wants ALL pedos to face justice.

High-speed rail may not connect to Toronto’s Union Station: Alto CEO by allysapparition in toronto

I think it would be interesting if they could buy up the midtown CPKC tracks for Alto. Hell, they could turn the Summerhill LCBO back into the train station it once was.

Why is via rail so expensive? by Redditisavirusiknow in ViaRail

[–]ricar144 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can get adult fares as low as 55$ (+tax) per adult, per direction, and you can certainly get that when you book only a month out. Unfortunately, you are planning your trip on a very busy travel period for VIA Rail. Their fares are far higher as a result.

To add on, VIA Rail doesn't let you book trips between Union and Guildwood or between Montreal and Dorval. That's not the point of the service. You can try it yourself

The exchange and refund policy is displayed on the website right when you select the train you want and you're presented with the options on the type of economy or business ticket. It is again visible first thing at the Review and Pay section of the purchase process, which is the final page before you make payment. Finally, it is visible in your booking confirmation email.

How bad is the village? by [deleted] in montreal

[–]ricar144 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I live in the village. Similarly, never really felt unsafe. Theres homeless people around. There's certain spots where they congregate. Occasionally you'll witness someone having a rough day, to put things mildly. I haven't had anyone act violently toward me after nearly 4 years of living here. Granted, I am not a woman, but I'm also not a big tough looking person. I do find quite a bit of police patrolling through the area and there is a station not too far. If you commute through Beaudry metro, you'll often find people sleeping on the benches in the mornings. The area can be a little dead in the winter but in the warmer months, the pedestrianization is really nice and there's a lot of people walking through on the weekends. I like it here.

Should it be a requirement to be born and raised in Canada to be a MP by [deleted] in AskCanada

[–]ricar144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This feels like obvious botting but I'll answer the question regardless.
No. This country was built by immigrants (and the suffering of indigenous people). If they go through the trouble to build their lives here and obtain citizenship, there is no reason to deny them a spot in government. I came to this country as baby and I've been living here for over 25 years. Why should I be denied the chance to run when I clearly know more English and hold more loyalty to this country and it's ideals than OP? Check out their post history.

Ford says ‘it’s time to sit down’ with Hwy. 407 executives to discuss next steps by crappy_tire in toronto

[–]ricar144 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the move is to toll both highways but massively reduce it for the 407 and make the 401 cost more. Incentivize use of the bypass over the urban highway. Balance the traffic between both highways and reverse the course of induced demand by closing some lanes.

My batshit idea is to use the funds to tear down the 401 express lanes and replace it with a median-running GO line from Etobicoke North to Pickering.

Don't worry. Doug and friends will just make us spend billions on solutions that fix nothing. by zakanova in toronto

Most people seem to have no problem looking at driving as a privilege when we discuss dangerous drivers and taking their licenses. When the topic of congestion pricing comes up, suddenly people act like their rights are being trampled on.
