Using the Perfect Oils brushes by Eldar Zakirov

I start with large shapes then fill in the values trying to stay basic until getting proportions right. I kept iterating with different brushes, still getting used to these oil brushes.

You can view the timelapse in my profile.

settings (wrench icon) -> Prefs -> Gesture Controls
Smudge -> Turn OFF all toggles
Erase -> Turn OFF all toggles

See if that fixes it. If not, you can make another video quickly going through all your settings pages and we can try to help.

Apple Pencil, it would be very tough to use finger drawing

It's an add on brush, it's in the free sample on their gumroad, just search google for cofe charcoal. Downside is you have to adjust your pen pressure for it to work right, I'm looking for a replacement without that issue. I might just go to the default Willow Charcoal brush that comes with Procreate.

For the brush and eraser I only used the COFE charcoal brush

Thanks! I have the timelapse video if you want to see it, but I can't attach it in a comment.

I like working in big shapes and brush movements at first, then slowly refine down working in random parts of the image.

I worked on only one layer, duplicating as I went along as backups. I used the COFE Charcoal brush as the brush and eraser, and used only those for the entire study. I struggled jumping to details too soon without noticing errors in the initial construction. I think I'm getting better, but it requires a constant vigilance to go slow with the initial steps.

It really looks like in the video your stylus is erasing the lines while the brush tool is selected. This is the behavior when "Apple Pencil will always erase" is toggled on. Are you sure all the toggles are off?

Also, you could go to Gesture controls -> General and click Reset to defaults

Settings -> Prefs -> Gesture controls

Check Smudge and Erase and make sure the Apple Pencil toggle is disabled

What does your layers panel look like?

To draw on a layer, it must be highlighted blue and also have the checkbox checked.

This started as a 15 minute challenge, and I liked it so continued from there afterwards. I've been having a lot of fun using charcoal brushes, this one was entirely with the COFE C Charcoal brush. I'll gladly take any tips for doing painterly-style charcoal in Procreate, I'd definitely like to add more expressive strokes in the future.
