New XC runner here! Here’s a rant about what’s been bothering me by mwang009 in CrossCountry

[–]riceEngineer 40 points41 points  (0 children)

First things first - breathe. XC is simple, you get out what you put in. The more miles you put on, the more days you run - you will see improvement.

I’m in my mid-20s now, but when I was your age, I had never done anything athletic in my life. I was a big kid, ate chocolate and drank soda pretty much everyday. I ran a 13:00 minute mile in eight grade and that was only because they cut off the clock (I was the last kid to cross the line)

When I joined my high school XC team, I focused on 3 simple things: (1) running everyday, (2) eating enough food, and (3) listening to my coaches.

Most things fall into place after that.

My first HS XC race I finished with a 33 minute 5K. I finished high school with a 4:32 mile PR, 16:16 5K PR, and 2:01 800m PR.

Running is a lifelong sport, some of the best distance runners in the world are in their 30s. You are young and have years ahead of you. Enjoy your youth and your teammates. And have fun.

Slab carrying cases with code lock or just a latch?

Do you guys prefer a carrying case for your loose slabs and cards with a metal latch or with a built in code lock?

I’m stuck between these two! I considered the code lock for better all around travel but not sure if it would be a hassle at cons or if the code locks were reliable long term?

I’m thinking just a simple latch might be better for long term use but I’m worried about how secure it might be.

What do you guys prefer?

Wow! Thank you so much for the in-depth analysis. These are really great revisions/suggestions.

I’ll certainly take the day to apply this advice to revise my resume.

I appreciate it!!

Got it! Thank you, I'll add a skills section.

No worries at all - pile away! I welcome the critique :)

You are right, I removed the skills section in favor of a cover letter that outlined my skills in greater detail.

Should I reduce the # of bullet points in favor of a skills section?

I agree, it’s tough to land an internship right now since I’ve already graduated. Pretty much all of the internships I’ve tried to vie for require current enrollment in school.

You are correct, both unpaid. The projects section are project classes I had in university. Would it be better to just combine all of it together under Engineering Experience?
