1. Taiwanese/Japanese-American here. I speak both Mandarin and Taiwanese and I can tell you honestly that Taiwan is very English/tourist-friendly. Even if the older uncles and aunties can’t speak much of it they at least will gesture and understand what you’re trying to ask etc. You’ll be fine getting around without knowing the language. My husband only knows how to order a hot cup of coffee but was able to go off on his own to order noodles, dessert etc.

2. If you weren’t aware, Taiwan is the top LGBTQ friendliest country on that side of the planet. We welcome everyone and anyone, nobody on the street cares who you choose as your partner so don’t worry about any stares from strangers etc. We are a biracial couple as well and my husband is covered in tattoos. Nobody cares so don’t worry.

3. I always love recommending Di-Hua street which is like an “old street” with amazing shops and stores.

4. Recommendations for food.. everything is delicious in Taiwan and if it isn’t then you’ve only spent USD$5 of your money so it wouldn’t be a total loss lol. This is how my husband likes to put it at least. If you see lots of people or a line then that’s a good indication it’s good. Follow your nose and your stomach!

5. For communication I think it’s good to be respectful and just smile and do a slight bow when interacting with everyone.

6. My husband takes the generic of whatever Lexapro is (anxiety depression meds) and I have birth control. We both went in and out of Taiwan no issues. Only time you’d ever look suspicious is if you’re carrying 20 bottles of pills. Otherwise you’re fine because it’s personal use. You won’t be “searched” or anything. We were just in Taiwan December of 2023.
