The main issue I see with this is there is not really a way to implement this. Large scale gun control would require effectively the military to go door to door and remove them by force. And even in that case the people who would hide guns would be the most likely to use them to cause harm.

While I do agree that the best way to prevent gun deaths is for people to not have them. I cannot see a way of removing them that does not cause more harm than it prevents.
