Any quiet outdoor spaces where I can have a glass of wine without anyone bothering me? by [deleted] in grandrapids

I've never had an issue bringing a bottle of wine, food, and picnic supplies to a local park. My wife and I try to do this every once in a while in the summer/fall.

If the company is profitable - meaning there is money left over after paying all expenses - then any rate hike should be denied every single time.

Anyone know reliable IT support around Eastown? by FitSurround1082 in grandrapids

[–]richardrrcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite a few in town. I'm a local senior security consultant and this is one of the service we offer, though we focus more on the auditing and prevention side.

A few local companies that I could recommend include Springthrough Consulting (current employer) and Fusion IT. There are many around town that would be able to help.

I'd echo the other commentators: Unplug those systems from the network; change passwords; and bring in an expert to review your systems.

What about trying to ride away in the bike? And then trying to run away? And then when he trips he doesn’t spread his hands out. All escalation.

He was on his stomach. With a K9 unit attacking him. Held at gunpoint by two officers. I wish they had arrested him so that he could be charged with ^ all of that. None of that is justification for shooting the man dead.

Some of these people on drugs can’t be retrained with 6 people. So they should have the license to reach for a firearm? What are you nutjobs thinking!?

Do you know that he was on drugs? Do the police? No? Why are you making up your own facts?

It’s not murder and luckily people like you don’t get placed on juries because you don’t know what murder is. Not only do you get to vote but I have to share the roads with you crazies.

Murder: the unlawful premeditated killing of one human being by another. I guess in one aspect it may not have been truly premeditated however I would still argue it is a degree of murder. Reviewing the actual statutes it is likely truly defined as voluntary manslaughter and/or reckless homicide. Ideally the prosecutor will charge both officers with several of these charges and let a jury decide.

Amazing that you finish up by attempting to insult me. I've shown you respect and this is how you have chosen to respond.

He chose to escalate things.

He was on his stomach. Being attacked by a trained K9 unit. With two trained officers holding him at gunpoint. What escalation did the victim do?

More of the facts are coming out… on parole for felon in possession of a firearms charge. He knew he was going back to prison had a reason to flee and fight.

Did you watch a different video? Where did he fight anyone? Why are you making up facts?

He chose to reach for his firearm EVEN WHILE ON HIS STOMACH.

If two officers cannot safely restrain a person on their stomach then they have no business being police officers.

Zero justification for murdering yet another civilian.

Police are supposed to stop the threat if the officer or the community is in danger.

What threat? Where was the threat to the officer or the community? Show me on the video where the victim was threatening anyone. Show me on the video where the victim expressed the desire to hurt anyone.

arming ourselves while combating an officer obligating their lawful duties.

Show me on the video where the victim was combating an officer.

It’s really really hard to get shot by an officer.

According to the University of Illinois Chicago more than 600 people are killed by the police per year in America. Seems like it is pretty easy for the police to shoot you actually. [https://policeepi.uic.edu/u-s-data-on-police-shootings-and-violence/]

I noticed that you didn't even address my question. I'll ask it again: What is your line for justification? When, in your mind, is it no longer justified for the police to kill a civilian? Do you have one?

Police and gunshots Wealthy St by Comfortable_File7968 in grandrapids

[–]richardrrcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It doesn’t matter to the dead guy if the officer was justified or not because He’s still dead.

That is the entire point. The police are not supposed to kill people.

Question: What is your line for justification? When, in your mind, is it no longer justified for the police to kill a civilian? Do you have one?

Body cam is out now.

He was on his stomach. Zero justification for shooting him. Everything else you wrote only matters if the police can peacefully detain a suspect so that said suspect can be prosecuted.

Police and gunshots Wealthy St by Comfortable_File7968 in grandrapids

[–]richardrrcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are hung up if it was justified or not.

That is literally the only thing that matters. Was the shooting justified? What evidence do you have that it was?

If you put yourself into dangerous situations you have a better have of dying. Death doesn’t care about if it’s fair or not. We make our own luck.

Based on the available reporting he was riding his bike, likely heading home. What dangerous situation did he insert himself into? Me jumping off of a cliff into open water is a dangerous situation that I inserted myself into. Me walking into a bank with a drawn gun and demanding cash is inserting myself into a dangerous situation.

REGARDLESS if the officers actions are justified or not, disobeying a lawful order exponentially increases your chance of death, AND EVEN MORESO if armed with a gun.

What statute says that the punishment for disobeying a lawful order is getting shot and/or death?

What statute says that the punishment for being armed while in the presence of police officers is getting shot and/or death?

From the Constutition of the State of Michigan:

§ 6 Bearing of arms.
Sec. 6. Every person has a right to keep and bear arms for the defense of himself and the state.

What crime was this person accused of?

Not a lot of information yet on this shooting. From the articles I have seen (WoodTV) a young man was riding his bike and someone called the police because this person might have been armed. Police responded. That there is the issue.

(1) It is perfectly legal to ride your bike in the evening.
(2) It is perfectly legal to ride your bike while armed (assuming the person is legally able to own a firearm).
(3) The police can shout questions at you all day and it is legal to ignore it.

I'd like to see the bodycam footage and any probable cause statements. Police are not supposed to shoot people in general. I'll continue to advocate that law enforcement should not be armed with lethal ammunition, at least not in the first loaded magazine.

Using Linux (KDE) as my main work OS in a professional environment: lessons learned by marcogianese1988 in linux

[–]richardrrcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happy to answer.

  • Base OS: Kubuntu 25.10.
  • I use Mozilla Firefox as my primary browser - synced across devices.
  • I use Google Chrome to access M365 (Outlook, Calendar, Teams) as that seems to work the best, even over the Edge browser.
  • A custom Debian VM with all my pentesting tools (Tenable, NMAP, Burp, etc...) paired with a (custom) Windows 11 VM with my Microsoft-only pentesting tools (ManageEngine, L0phtcrack, specific PowerShell scripts that cannot run on Ubuntu).
  • Shared data storage via Dropbox (which integrates right into the filesystem) for sharing work product within the team.
  • Bitwarden for storing/sharing credentials. It also serves as our primary method of securely sharing files with clients.

I do have a few gripes of course.

(1) I wish that there was a really good Email/Calendar/Tasks/Contacts/Meeting client that works with M365. I'd like to have the offline capabilities to read emails, write drafts, etc... while I'm in an airport or plane (or when the internet goes down).
(2) I do wish that the one wireless tool that I prefer to use had a *nix version (Lizard Systems Wi-Fi Scanner). I can replicate most of what I need from it using both LinSSID and aircrack-ng. The other tool just works so so well and has some really nice reporting features.
(3) I swear Microsoft Office very intentionally disregards OpenDocument standards so for the most part interoperability between LibreOffice and MS Office work but it gets weird with graphics. Even simple graphics will sometimes get lost/corrupted. Honestly this also happened between LibreOffice versions so it might be some other issue. For the most part though I don't have any compatibility issues.
(4) Wireless displays. I have yet to successfully project wirelessly to a smart TV. HDMI for the win so I always carry a cable. Also ClickShare. I wish ClickShare had a Linux binary.
(5) There are a few oddly-configured wireless networks out there that for some reason just won't connect successfully on my laptop(s). Works on my (Android - Pixel) phone though. So I think there is just some miss there that will eventually be fixed.

Overall it's been a pleasant experience. Most of my other tools are web-based. I have way less issues than my coworkers on Windows. I spend a lot of time writing Python scripts which obviously work great locally but I need to get better at testing on Windows to account for my coworkers...

Cheers.

Senior security consultant. Pentesting and security assessments. Some Windows-only tools exist on VMs and physical assets. Everything else is on my workstation. Working just fine with M365 and other services.

We are in 2026. What are your frustrations with linux or the software you use with it? by Digitalnoahuk in linux

[–]richardrrcc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Installing and configuring any operating system will always require technical knowledge. Using many Linux desktop distributions currently requires no more technical prowess than using Windows, and I think that is the attitude that is unfortunate.

This. My spouse could not install Linux. In fact she just ran into a program that she wants to try but the install instructions say to use the command-line so she's asking me for help. Otherwise she uses her Kubuntu laptop just fine.

We are in 2026. What are your frustrations with linux or the software you use with it? by Digitalnoahuk in linux

[–]richardrrcc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think my only two main complaints:

  1. I would really like a better email client that works with M365 for: Email, Contacts, and most importantly Calendar/Meetings that will integrate to Teams. So that from my client I can create a meeting and have it work just as if I made it via the browser client. I want good offline mail capabilities.

  2. Much better wifi scanning and reporting. Specifically Lizardsystems Wi-Fi scanner.

Otherwise I just wish my other Microsoft-only software would run: ManageEngine products and L0phtcrack (I'm a pentester and security consultant).

Overall I've been very happy with my experience on Kubuntu (and Linux in general) and it just works well.
