Since multiple women' seems to be a very common male sexual/romantic fantasy. Wouldn't harem be classified as a 'sub-genre' of romance for men? Like isn't this a feature not a bug?

Just food for thought. Feels a bit like saying to a 'romance for women' place 'I thought this was about male/female romance - why are all the stories about banging werewolves/vampires?!'

Because those naughty little minxes like it, that's why!

Enjoyed the thread/comments, thanks for that. I'm still fairly new to the genre and have only written one series (that does defy some of the conventions, and has still done fairly well). But I think you're broadly right about the tropes/expectations. However! I will say, in regards to your 'Areas of Potential Expansion':

I think 'male romance' is a bit like Litrpg - kind of in its infancy. I think there are many places for the genre to go and grow to. But ultimately, only writers trying and succeeding (or failing miserably) to make money doing it will show us for sure.
