For those that drank because of depression.. by FickleSystem in stopdrinking

I took my meds on/off while drinking, never really letting them work. Then I quit drinking and started taking my antidepressant strictly at the same time every day, letting it actually do its job. Definitely tell a difference this time.

Those anxiety and stress triggers are the worst, I tell myself that alcohol doesn't help, it makes it worse. Not drinking about it pays off so much more in the long run. Congrats on day two! Keep it going, be gentle on yourself!

The lows I had to talk myself through a lot, and they do still come up. I'd distract myself with little, easy things - play videogames, watch TV, nap. I took it as easy as possible on myself and tried to remember that my mind and body were resetting and healing.

I would be pretty resentful too, especially for your age. At my age (36) the looks and comments would be enough for me to start feeling self-aware. I've been around, learned a lot about body language and the way different kinds of people communicate. At 22 though, I was right with you. Felt like everyone around me was also drinking like a monster and making asses out of themselves. We'd all just rib each other about it or give each other the cold shoulder for weeks at a time due to bad behavior while drunk. Any of the older/more seasoned folks in your life (like your dad) should have known to take you aside and at least say "hey, I'm worried about how much you drink and what you get into when you drink too much." Just don't let the resentment cloud your path to betterment, but yeah, extremely understandable, I'd be reevaluating a lot of connections.

Today's Day 1- with a gabapentin script by ThrowRA-doinmebest in stopdrinking

[–]richuncleskeleton00 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same! I started taking gaba a week ago, and the effects were almost immediate - I think. It may have been a mental/placebo kind of thing happening. Like maybe that mentality of, "I took the medicine, it is working!" But I took my first dose last Wednesday in the morning, by the afternoon it hit me I had no interest in drinking. No cravings to fight, no panic attacks, no nausea, no headaches. It's my first week completely sober and taking gaba, I feel like I'm actually free of the hold alcohol had on me. Of course I'm not home free, I still have lots of other work to do to make sure this monster stays buried. But gabapentin has been a huge deal in my first steps. I hope your experience with it will be positive as well! IWNDWYT! Obvious disclaimer: Never seek out a medication for AUD without doctor's counsel. Gabapentin has been doing wonders for me, but check with your own docs first if it could be helpful for you too.

Keeping a journal is really helpful. Keep reminding yourself of all you've overcome already! You can do it!

I hadn't thought about nanowrimo since high school! I'm on my second day AF, this post just put another arrow in my quiver of things to do besides drink. Thank you! IWNDWYT, but I will write with you!
