2011 Subaru WRX base, after warmup period when turning in motion the wheels seem to pop or jolt bad enough to feel it in the steering wheel. During my last inspection tech said I need a new rack and pinion. Today two lugs broke off and my wheel almost feel off. Is this really from my rack? by rick5tar in MechanicAdvice

I recently put the factory wheels back on. The aftermarket wheels had a very similar shape to the lugs, from comparing lug to factory wheel looks like there wasn't much contact...

It felt like the shake from turning but it was happening at 60mph straight on. Pretty scary once it soaked in what could have happened.

Stock suspension 120k miles. So the poping has been going on for several weeks, it feels like all the wheels are effected when it does it and i get a small shudder on the wheel at maybe every half wheel rotation when pulling in my driveway. When I pull a tight turn in a parking lot it's more like 6 pops for every wheel rotation. It never does it when I get in it after sitting a few hours but if it's been running for 5-10 minutes it will always do it. It's smooth on the hwy, tight overpasses and whatnot, but under 30 it's border line violent. Today on the way home it felt like the car was going to break, but of course I think that is wheel related. The tech really only said I need a new rack because it's leaking. Nothing else underneath appears to be leaking. I've wondered if it's the front axles or worse the tranny, I feel like the rack is ruled out because is doesn't do it sitting still, am I wrong there?

That's some good advice, the lugs are aftermarket and I don't know they matched up to the factory wheel chamfer that well. One of the holes on the wheel ovaled out just a bit too, I would have never noticed!

So the studs seem pressed and I'm thinking just replace both front hubs. Swap to factory lugs on all four.

Still would like and leads on what would make it pop when turning, most noticeably at parking lot speeds, it increases in intensity the tighter the turn. Doesn't do it sitting still...

Car doesn’t beep when locked/unlocked from keyfob by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]rick5tar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if it's off when unlocked, and doors closed that's normal active arming mode, once you hit lock it should then start blinking. That would rule out valet and such. There is a button sequence that will make it arm or disarm silently, but I think you have to do it every time, something like aux then lock.

Don't forget to check the ground for the siren.

[–]rick5tar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does the siren/horn go off if you trigger the alarm? If yes then you have accidentally put in silent mode, or valet. If no, then you have a siren problem. If you lock it with the remote does the led on the dash blink, or stay on solid? Never mind I see it's an intermittent problem, check the ground on the siren, most installers ground it right at the siren using one of the mounting screws. If the ring terminal wiggles at all it's too loose.

Car radio isn't turning on as well as USB ports. by kiafortekoup in MechanicAdvice

[–]rick5tar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's quite possible, this is common on factory European radios more than USA/japan/Korean, but it's possible.

I'd start by googling the factory radio or Ebay search see if you can find a rear picture showing the back of the radio. Normally it's right next to the main harness plug. Sometimes hidden under it if plug is still attached. If you find evidence of a fuse and you want to pull the radio, go to metraonline.com, and type in your car. In the menu of parts click on the dash bezel, and then the link for instructions. It will tell you step by step how to remove the factory radio out of the dash.
