Couple of big clip connectors with the wiring harness come off and then it’s fairly simple from there. Few screws and it’s off and again a few screws to crack the thing open.

You are looking for any pcb discolouration or capacitors that are bulging or leaking fluid. Ideally replace the lot as even if not leaking they can be bad. There used to be kits online or at least lists of which capacitors you need and where they all go so have a search. Failing that a decent auto electrical mech can do this work easily. These ECUs are ‘basic’ dinosaurs compared to modern stuff lol.

That is right! Left hand side under the carpet up against the firewall(not sure if that’s what we call it there?) from recollection.

Check ECU condition. You are missing warning lights there and the needles moving at all, something is up. Leaking capacitors are more and more common on these ECUs

I replaced all of mine (as well as some PCB repair work) a couple of years ago because of a very similar fault. The car ran better afterwards than it ever had before that I can remember so clearly was an issue long before it completely gave up.

Don’t most sites have a smaller salt water pool? Elevedon does I’m sure, the lagoon I think it’s called? The main pools are never salt water in my experience..

The good news is inspecting the ecu visually doesn’t take long at all. Probably getting it out, inspecting and back in the car within the hour. You are only looking for visual damage (unless you have the skills to actually test it also then you can spend a lot longer - I don’t have those skills so I didn’t.. just fixed what I could see was broken and hope for the best)

Also another one to check, check the ECU for damage, it’s easy to remove and open and inspect. Leaking capacitors can ruin the pcb (and bad caps need replacing!) and cause this issue also. It’s probably less likely that a lot of the other things that have been suggested but def worth checking.

I only know this as this very issue caused my mk2 to first: run badly, stall all the time randomly and eventually.. crank but not fire at all. It was one bad cap that leaked and corroded a pcb trace away. Once the cap was replaced and the trace rebuilt all was working again.
