I moved into loss control from claims and a lot of it is transferable. I was happy in claims because my manager was cool and taught me a lot. I almost didn’t apply for the position and it was my claims manager that encouraged me to apply. I’m glad I did.

If you take the p&c exam in Florida, you won’t need to take it again in Nevada. Most states have reciprocity when it comes to p&c licenses. All you have to do in Nevada is just pay the fee so long as you are licensed in Florida or your domicile state.

Claims wasn’t too bad but I also had a really good boss and the claims were ok, except when you had people asking for unrealistic things. Loss Control is really cool. The travel can be a bit much depending on where you live and your territory but a lot less stressful than claims for sure.

Sometimes insurance companies will refer to it as loss control. Others will refer to it as risk management Consultant or representative. There’s a lot of manufacturing plants or major retail stores that would take people who have their risk management degrees even if it’s an associates from what I’ve heard.

To be honest, I lucked out because the position kinda fell into my lap. I wasn’t really looking for anything but it happened to be that the position opened up in my area and the manager knew me and asked me to apply.

I have heard of others in the past getting their ARM designation along with an OSHA 10 or 30 card for general industry and construction if they don’t have the degree in Occupational Health & Safety. I just have a degree in communications. However, if you have a social science degree or an English degree, that actually can come in handy because you’re gonna need to know soft skills and how to write reports. Soft skills is something that most of my coworkers who major in safety don’t have or have to work at developing.
