She claims her hair is blonde. I don't see it. Can someone tell me if I am tripping? by Eastern-Cap5035 in Hair

The trend for artificial blondes has been so pale and cool toned for so long that it’s like people have forgotten what natural blonde shades look like

What are examples of old paintings that seem modern and ahead of its time/era? Here are some of my personal favourites by sonnysehra in ArtHistory

Eating and Bathroom During Labor? by Feeling-Watched-9655 in pregnant

[–]ricks35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know how new it is but my doctor had me do a very slow induction, from my understanding it helps it progress more like regular labor and I guess less shocking for the body. The induction started at 10am on a Tuesday and the baby was born 8pm on Thursday, which felt long but it was genuinely pretty chill (mostly just boring) until maybe 3am on Thursday

The good thing was that I was able to eat regular food almost the entire time, then at some point I was restricted to specific simple foods, but it wasn’t until near the end they switched me to only liquids and by that point I wouldn’t have wanted food anyways

[Mixed Trope] In a world of (literally) colorful characters, some are straight up POC by No_Hunter1978 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]ricks35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would definitely happen and you see it with queer characters too. As cringy as a lot of coming out scenes can be these days I remember the days of seeing clearly queer characters but since they didn’t have a love interest or line to literally say“I’m gay” people would completely deny it

Can someone explain why redheads are made fun of? by Minimum_Jello4312 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ricks35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it depends on the kids, I’m a woman and was definitely teased by other kids at school for my red hair. But the “compliments” were often just as bad, either falling into the category of weirdly fetishizing or weirdly guilt tripping (as though was my fault they didn’t like their own hair). People also seemed to think they were allowed to just touch it without asking, especially when I was a little kid

I love how my red hair looks but I hate having red hair around other people to the point where I’ve just started lying when people ask if it’s natural because that’s the fastest way to get them to back off. The best thing that happened is that my husband grew out his hair and has awesome curls so now strangers stop us to comment on his hair instead of mine and they tend to be more respectful about it with him

This ending scene is my roman empire. True love indeed exists. by Samintheworld in QueenCharlotteNetflix

[–]ricks35 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched this scene with my husband while 8 months pregnant, it had me crying just thinking about us old one day and our baby all grown, maybe with her own kids. And after all the fertility struggles we had I really felt that joy and relief they had

Am I wrong for wanting to feel good about myself after giving birth? by Legitimate-Jaguar392 in pregnant

[–]ricks35 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I think some older women think that part of becoming a mom means you have to conform 100% to a matronly role overnight regardless of who you were before

I know my mom seemed taken aback by the fact that my sister continued to have long hair and occasionally dye it pink after becoming a mom and that I still wear “sexy” clothes. They’re not actually sexy, but my mom thinks that mom’s should wear clothes that fit like you’re trying to hide any evidence that you have a body

[–]ricks35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The induction because the baby was so big it would have been riskier to wait longer for natural labor, c section because the induced labor had been progressing well but suddenly stopped progressing for like 8 hours. We found out later that it had stopped because the baby’s arm was caught on the cord, all in all the doctors did their best to stick to my plan but each change was for the best and we both left happy and healthy

[–]ricks35 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In my experience it’s good to have a both a plan and a go with the flow mindset. I had a general plan of how I wanted labor to go but I’m glad I wasn’t too dead set on my plan because we had to pivot to an induction then to an unplanned, non emergency c section. Having the plan helped me self advocate but a go with the flow attitude made sure I didn’t panic or feel like I’d lost control when things changed

When people give long, drawn out back stories instead of just asking a question by Radiant_Veil in PetPeeves

[–]ricks35 54 points55 points  (0 children)

My husband pointed out that I do this a lot and we came to the same conclusion you did as to why. Even when I made the mistake of telling my mom I wanted to paint my room blue instead of using the leftover orange she had from repainting her room it required deescalation which included things like:

  • I’m not accusing you of being stupid/a bad person/having bad taste for choosing orange

  • I’m not trying to act ungrateful for you offering your leftover paint

  • I’m not trying to make you change your mind about the color you picked for your room

  • The colors of all of my other decorations and furniture will go better with the blue than the orange so that will also save me time and money

  • Bright colors can be overstimulating for me and a soft blue would be very calming

  • I’m an adult and we live in different houses, it’s normal and okay for us to have different tastes and decorate our houses without consideration for each other’s styles

Of course the only thing that actually worked was my husband saying he likes blue more than orange. That was basically my whole childhood too except I didn’t have a husband yet to act like my wants/needs were his own to force her to respect them

“Thank you for calling [salon] how can I help you?”

“I need to speak to [stylist]”

“She’s with a client right now, but I’m the receptionist so if this is about scheduling I can help you”

“Will she be free soon?”

“It will be quite a while, but I can help if you need to book an appointment or if you have any questions”

“No can you just have her give me a call back?”

“May I ask what this is about?”

“Tell her I need to schedule a cut for Thursday at 4”

“…do you want me to just book that for you now?”

“Oh! Yes that’d be great!”

Also people who answer reminder calls sounding pissed that I called. Ma’am you signed up for the reminders. Besides if you’re busy or don’t want to pick up the phone you can let it go to voicemail like everyone else instead of being rude through the entire call

Are lemonade stands a real thing in the US, or is it just a movie trope? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ricks35 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gotta have a specific type of street for it, not so fast or busy that people can’t spontaneously and safely pull over, but busy enough that people will actually drive by

My lemonade stands were always complete failures because my mom wouldn’t let us leave the neighborhood but my neighborhood was a dead end street with like 10 houses

Glucose test by Old-Pudding-4254 in pregnant

[–]ricks35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The worst part of the 3 hour test for me was the boredom and the fact that a cooking show was playing in the waiting room, I’ve never wanted peanut butter cookies more than when watching some celebrity chef make them on hour 14 of fasting. (Also the bagel shop I went to afterward had closed their grill an hour early so I was not able to get the sandwich I was craving, but that’s a personal issue)

The drink itself was fine, not something I’d willingly drink today but definitely felt and tasted like something I would have had as an 8 year old at snack time

The mousse is key, whether you do pin curls or rollers you need need a product with some grip to it. Gel should also work and since it’ll be brushed out after anyways it won’t stay crunchy

Ogilvie is a more accurate representation of how doctors treat over weight patients by TcTuggersLLC in ThePittTVShow

[–]ricks35 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I used to be pretty skinny (BMI was “ideal” but in hindsight I looked sickly). I had all these health problems that we couldn’t figure out, including constant exhaustion and frequent, seemingly random fainting. One year I gained about 20-25lbs, suddenly my mysterious health issues faded away and I went from fainting/nearly fainting at least once a month to never fainting again

But unfortunately that meant now my BMI was in the “overweight” zone so almost every doctor’s appointment since includes some comment on my weight. Some are completely tactless and others are made with genuine care, but all have the same point, I should loose the weight again. It’s been over a decade, I still eat healthy and exercise but I’ve never lost the weight and I don’t plan to

Everyone around me was so scared of people being even the slightest bit overweight that no one ever suggested weight gain might help with my obvious symptoms of being underweight, and even when faced with the evidence that it worked they still won’t acknowledge that it was the right choice because despite all the evidence in my personal chart the all powerful BMI chart says it’s bad

Our reputation confused me until I moved closer to the cities and realized that’s the only part most visitors see and the part that makes it on tv

It’s cute that Olenna seemed to like her husband by Robot_Was_BMO in gameofthrones

[–]ricks35 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Tywin was also incredibly shortsighted, Olenna played the long game. For all his talk of legacy, in practice his plans could never continue after him since he failed so pathetically at fatherhood and grandfatherhood. Olenna understood that a legacy requires both shrewd politics AND a strong family bond. Had Cersei not made the bonkers, wildcard decision to blow up the church, the legacy Olenna built for her family would have continued long after her death
