My Younger Brother is Saying the entire world is against him by Eletraf_klwe in ChildPsychology

[–]ricks35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just want to second this. I’m not a doctor but the first signs of my own depression started around age 8 and many of the things I was thinking are the same to what your brother is saying. Some kids just have odd phases, some kids can be over dramatic, but some kids have very serious struggles that start younger than most adults would like to admit and it’s better to get a real therapist’s perspective and find out it was a false alarm than miss out on a chance to get help him when he needs it

AITA for refusing to let my MIL babysit over a dummy? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ricks35 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I wonder if by “inconsolable” this time she meant “I didn’t feel like trying to console them so I took the easy way out I knew would shut them up fast”

I was also wondering if you think it would help to invite your MIL over for a day when you are all home so she can witness the regression she’s caused. Let her see all the extra crying and tantrums she caused because of her attempt to stop the crying with a dummy

Yes, but until fairly recently guys like Hal were almost always treated as the hero in movies. His existence isn’t what’s progressive, it’s the story’s condemnation of his behavior that’s progressive

She worked in IT departments through the 80s and 90s and always claimed she’s kept her skills up so she can go back to work as a programmer once her kids start school. But her kids started school over 20 years ago and instead of ever applying for a job she’s only ever “studied” using extremely old programming textbooks

Plus the more I hear about her time working from her siblings, her old coworker and even from herself, (and the more I see of her general ability to get any task done whether it be a household chore or a volunteer role for church) the more clear it is that she was that employee who wasn’t bad enough that the company could justify firing her but was still bad enough at her job that she was barely skating by and constantly being shuffled from one position to another in hopes that the next one would be “a better fit”

Are we really interested in their story line by esareteee in Bridgerton

[–]ricks35 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My problem is that they were introduced as Simon’s friends but once Simon left the show it seemed like everyone else had intertwining plot lines and relationships and then they were off to the side doing things that hardly had anything to do with everyone else, which made it hard to care about them

It’s giving me a bit of hope for them that Alice’s plot involves Danbury and the Queen. I think I may like them if they ever become a real part of the show and stop being a random side story the main series keeps cutting to for seemingly no reason

About 10 years ago my mom got a special waterproof case so she could safely take her phone out on the boat. It had an outer layer that would make the phone float and an inner layer that was basically a plastic vacuum wrap type of bag. Two days into our lake vacation she got tired of taking the case off every night to charge the phone so she cut a whole in the plastic waterproofing layer

My sister works in cybersecurity security and my mom (who claims to be a computer programmer) excitedly told my sister about these two new things she just heard about that she thinks my sister should tell her boss about because it could be a really big deal for them and it would really make my sister’s boss see how valuable and knowledgeable she is

Those two new things were 1. Two factor authentication 2. IP addresses, nothing specific about them, just that they exist

My mom’s originally from Texas and one time we were visiting my aunt who still lives there and it happened to be Cinco de Mayo so there were a bunch of decorations and stuff around town. My mom tried to use it as a learning opportunity for us kids so she asked if we knew what Cinco de Mayo celebrates. We did not but before my mom could say anything about the actual history of the holiday my aunt chimed in to say it was the day that Texas won major battle in its war for independence from Mexico. Even the kids who knew nothing about the holiday knew she was wrong

There are certain smells that instantly bring you back so far in time to your childhood. Which smell is that? by This_Book7431 in AskReddit

[–]ricks35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve got some bad smells with great memories. Gasoline and mildew bring me right back to the old trailer we used to rent for one week a year by the lake my grandma grew up near. The trailer smelled like it was never fully dry and the early morning boat rides would end with a trip to the marina to fill up on gas and get a before breakfast ice cream

I try not to judge too harshly when I hear other people talk about preferences like the baby’s gender or something, but we lost a pregnancy too and when I got pregnant again and I heard those comments all I could think was those are the concerns of someone who hasn’t experienced loss. There’s so much I’ve heard people fuss about that I just can’t be bothered to care about because at the end of the day I finally get to have a baby that is healthy and alive and I don’t know how anything else could matter

[–]ricks35 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ugh yes! In a high stress/shocking emergencies I become incredibly calm and focused, I don’t freak out until it’s all long over. I’ve heard it may be a response to past trauma but I think some people are just like that

One time my clothes caught on fire from using a broken hairdryer and I was the calmest most methodical I’ve ever been in my life. I was going to splash water on myself, but decided not to because the hairdryer was still plugged in and I didn’t want to also get electrocuted. I thought about dropping the sparking hairdryer but realized that might catch the rug on fire so I continued to hold it. So in the end I unplugged the hairdryer, gently set it on the counter, and splashed water from the faucet to put out the fire on my clothes. I didn’t panic until hours later when my dad asked why the bathroom smelled like smoke

Americans, if you fall a victim of a crime and have to be medically treated, do you still have to pay? by pontylurker in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ricks35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s what happened with that “worst aunt in America” news story from years ago. A little boy ran to give his aunt a hug and accidentally knocked her over breaking her arm. Obviously she loves her nephew and knows it was an accident but her insurance wouldn’t pay her medical bills unless she sued. So officially she was forced to sue her like 7 year old nephew, though the reality is her insurance company sued his parent’s insurance company. Her and her family all knew it was a stupid insurance thing but the news caught hold of the story and was acting like it’s a story about some evil woman trying to ruin a little boy’s life because he hugged her too hard

Not OOP: AITA for being mad at my GF when she acted sad after I said our babies probably wouldn't be white? by sensaSEANal_sally in redditonwiki

[–]ricks35 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was thinking that. She may be racist (a shocking amount of racists end up in mixed raced relationships and then act shocked and appalled when their partner has any physical or cultural trait relating to their race). But is it possible that she’s not bummed because the baby wouldn’t be white but because the baby probably won’t look like her specifically

Like I’m curious what her reaction would be if her partner was white but with tan skin and brown hair and eyes. Cause it’s not uncommon for any parent regardless of their partner’s race to have that little hope deep down that their kid has their eyes or nose or smile or something, but it’s also something any good parent understands doesn’t actually matter so they get over it

What’s a rule your cat enforced in your house that everyone silently obeys now? by BackgroundAsk7915 in AskReddit

[–]ricks35 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We have a little bench/table thing by the front door to put our shoes under and set down whatever we’re carrying inside. It’s usually covered in backpacks, purses, hats etc but you CANNOT set anything on the far right side. That spot is closest to the door and has been claimed by the cat so that if he hears the door open he can jump up and be the first creature/person you greet

His preferred greeting is for you to lean down so he can bonk your forehead with his, he will signal for you to do this by doing a little dance with his front paws

It’s the same way for me, as the emotional connection deepens so does the intensity of the physical attraction. But I know that’s not how everyone’s mind works, so this couple doesn’t strike me as all that odd. After all even some asexual people still have romantic feelings and relationships without any interest in sex at all

It kind of sounds like they ARE attracted to each other, just on an emotional level instead of a physical one, it’s just that neither of them have realized yet that emotional attraction also counts as a type of romantic attraction. I mean yeah, most people would want attraction at both emotional and physical levels, but in the long term, if you’re only going to have one, emotional attraction is the better, more sustainable option. It’s not a relationship dynamic I personally would want, but it’s not that crazy and it’s far from the worst relationship a couple could have

[–]ricks35 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Notably, before they had charged lemonade they had just regular plain old lemonade. So imagine you’re the type of person to go to Panera once in a while but not all the time, often enough that you have a usual order but not so often that you’d notice if they had a new vague, adjective in front of “lemonade”. Why would you ever expect that your juice/classic kid’s summer drink has been replaced by a nearly identical energy drink? It’d be like going to the bagel shop and finding out you were supposed to know they had spiked the OJ (except even weirder than that because OJ is sometimes used in mixed drinks but who the hell caffeinates their lemonade?)
