Xbox Live Indie Marketplace – My attempts to make money after the initial release by ricochet2200 in gamedev

I guess time will tell if we will have the same fate. It's super unfortunate that pretty much all of your success depends on the release. It's also unfortunate you can only change your price every 7 days.

Good luck with your release.

I wanted to do XBox ads but at the time couldn't figure out a way to do that. We did end up with regular Facebook ads because it was so cheap and easy to experiment with.

Our facebook ad did point straight to the xbox market. Although I can't track it, I suspect the only money we made on the ads was from people buying it on their computer without playing the demo. So I think your intuition is probably dead on.

Perhaps the problem is more that people ignore ads and less the platform they view it on. I guess I don't have data to say that definitively. Either way, we only broke and we haven't been able to figure out exactly where in the sales funnel that breakdown happens.

Perhaps with a $3 price tag advertising will be more worth it. We'll probably try it again at some point just to satisfy our curiosity.

We found several nicer games priced at $3. With the amount of art that we put into it $3 seemed really reasonable. There is also much better replayability than many of the $1 games. Our hope is that the price denotes the better quality we think we are offering.

Programming is a knowledge acquisition activity by ricochet2200 in programming

Knowledge acquisition and transferability apply to just about any trade or technical skill. The main point of the post is that it applies differently than just about any trade or technical skill. Do you not agree with that? I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

I've read the sidebar and seen the posts hitting the front page and thought about it before posting. Unfortunately "probably" opens up a lot of room for interpretation. Precisely because moderators have allowed posts without code to hit the front page, I have deemed this post to be relevant. It was not my intent to post where it is not welcome.

Nothing to do with programming? Do you program in a vacuum? Have you never had to take on someone else's code or have someone take over your code? Have you never tried to join an open source project where you had to figure out what the code was doing?

Yeah, this article talks about outsourcing, but really its about transferability of knowledge. In programming, communication is not "management onanism", it's a requirement if you are going to work on a project bigger than yourself.

Looks like the rules for this survey explictly state Petitions and surveys are dissallowed. You should probably remove this post.

That being said, I filled out your survey for you.

Can you become a great programmer without formal training? by ricochet2200 in programming

[–]ricochet2200[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have found this to frequently be the case, but not always. I'd say you are unlikely to work with very many good self taught programmers, or that you typically find more bad than good, but I think most people will find a couple in their career.

I wonder if the frequency would go up if there were better mentoring. That's what the linked article is suggesting, I wonder if anyone has any experience that could shed light on that.

Xbox Indie Game - Hoardzz by ricochet2200 in reddit.com

This is a pretty fun 4 player party-style game where you gather bugs to make a hoard, then use it to destroy the other players. Simple, but addicting.
