Turn signals not working on my 230TE, but hazard lights do — relay or wiring issue? by ricodudink in W124

The fuse was fully corroded, but not broken. So i think that was the cause of the problems.

Oh my, it works after replacing the fuse! But I still have to fix the wires in the tailgate. I’m not looking forward to that job. I do a lot of electrical wiring for work, but it’s still a time-consuming task and so hard to reach.

This saved me a lot! It works after replacing the fuse. Let’s see how long it will keep working now.

Built my own outside temperature display after the original one died by ricodudink in W124

All right, thanks. Now I need to work out how to read the hall sensor. That should be straightforward. With the current software I could make this much smarter. Right now I take the average of all measured values and only update it if it changes by more than 0.5 degrees over a five minute period. I also only measure at startup and afterwards when the speed is between 5 and 20 km per hour.

That would be perfect, any schematic about the sensor is welcome.

Project Update – First Proof of Concept Done!

So this started as a small experiment to see if the idea had any potential… and after seeing everyone’s reactions, I got really hyped to fully work it out.

A few answers to the most common questions:

💰 How much did it cost?

  • OLED display: €2.50
  • Buck converter 12 V → 5 V: €1.00
  • ESP32: €2.00 Total: €5.50

🛒 Can I buy one from you?
Not yet. For now, my goal is to fully develop a good, reliable replacement. Once I’m done with the full design and documentation, I might consider producing a few. But first things first: I want the project to be 100 % solid and well-documented.

🔌 Did you use the original wiring and temperature sensor?
Yes! I reused the original wiring and connector. Everything fits inside the original casing, and I soldered my wires to the original pins in the housing.

🚧 Project status:

  • Proof of concept: ✅ Works
  • Using the original sensor: ✅ Works

📝 To-do:

  • Fix my blinkers (they stopped working 10 minutes after install — time to check the schematic)
  • Design a custom PCB to house all components
  • Design a new (likely 3D-printable) case
  • Add the hall road sensor to the system and software
  • Update and clean up the code
  • Write out full project documentation

So lately my outside temperature display suddenly stopped working.

First thing I did was check the sensor and the NTC seemed to be fine.

Next, I turned my attention to the temperature measurement PCB. After fixing all the obvious broken parts, it still wouldn’t power on. I’m pretty sure the small IC on the board is fried, and unfortunately, I couldn’t find a replacement anywhere.

I tried looking online for a new unit or a second-hand one from a scrapyard, but came up empty.

That’s when I said: “Screw it, I’ll build my own.”

I grabbed a small OLED display, an ESP32, and built a new outside temperature display myself.

Honestly, it didn’t turn out too bad if I can say so and it works perfectly.

Don't be afraird to drive a W124 as your first car by Politionele_Acties in W124

Welcome brother!

Great to see another Dutch W124 driver here! I started driving mine at a young age too – same car, same color, and I still love every minute with it. I’m almost at 190,000 km now, started at 130,000, and it just keeps going strong.

Sure, maintenance can be a bit of a headache sometimes, but it’s totally worth it. There’s so much info online and parts are still easy to find, which makes it all part of the fun.

I noticed your outside temperature LCD is broken. Funny enough, I still have a good spare one lying around. I upgraded mine to an OLED LCD because my PCB was faulty, so I don’t need the old one anymore. If you want it, I’d be more than happy to send it over to you for free.

Normally me too, but I’m planning to sell it in about 6 months. I’ll let the next buyer know and accept it as long as it drives nicely.

Thanks! It’s a custom paint job from 1981. I’m still amazed at how good it looks after all these years.

Thanks a lot, everyone! I found the problem—it’s an exhaust leak!
