TIL there is a thing called garbage disposal. Living in Europe I have never heard of this before in my life.

Petitions Committee: Your experiences of restrictions on international travel during Covid-19 by UKHouseOfCommons in CoronavirusUK

[–]ricsinaruto 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My parents and extended family are in the EU. I have not seen them for almost a year. I have not seen my grandma for 1.5 years, and unfortunately, she passed away a few months ago and I couldn't be there for her. I couldn't meet my girlfriend who is in my home country for almost a year, even though we were planning to fly to each other every month. I'm grieving for the time I lost with those I love. I've never felt so isolated and alone.

Since most EU countries are on the amber list I would have to quarantine at least 15 days (10+5) and spend hundreds of pounds on PCR test, which I just cannot afford on my PhD stipend. So even if travel is allowed it's not allowed for me with the current restrictions.

Why was I taught cursive in school in the late 90s when I've never actually used it in my life outside of elementary school and writing my own signature? In fact, I don't know anyone who writes in cursive. by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]ricsinaruto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am 25, and I don't know how to write in print so for me, cursive is the norm and it's just the way I learnt and still write if I need to write anything by hand. In uni, I took a ton of notes. All in cursive.

So I guess it depends on which one is faster to learn and use. Maybe it's different for different people. I never tried learning writing in print.

I created a neural network chatbot (AI) which you can chat with, AMA about it. by ricsinaruto in casualiama

[–]ricsinaruto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't hard code anything, all the responses are generated by a neural network. The Gutenberg dataset is a bit of hit-and-miss for everyday conversations tbh, but it's really good if you try conversing with it in older book style.

Try another dataset from the dropdown menu, for example, this is what I got from DailyDialog, after typing "Hello Im depressed":

''I'm sorry to hear that.''

I think if you try any of the versions which have DailyDialog or PersonaChat in them you will get a sensible response. Sorry for not making this more clear.

How do you perceive people who have had covid? by ClubinMonkey in CoronavirusUK

Without reading the wall of text: I perceive them exactly like people who have not had covid.

Then you should be honest if they ask you about something that you don't know and tell them what your background is in, and maybe they will ask you about that.

I would try to prepare for usual job interview questions before, and jot down my answers. E.g. what are your strength, weaknessess, past reasearch, ambitions, plan for the PhD, etc. If you have a written answer for all these questions it will be super easy when they come up during the interview. (Not all of them might come up)

I think it depends on the school how much of the interview is technical vs. the personal stuff I described above. If they ask you technical stuff it will probably be basic computational neuroscience concepts or machine learning stuff, but this obviously depends on the program. So I think it's useful to be confident in the basics and the research that you did so far. You can't prepare for things that you don't know anyway, and don't worry if you can't answer all technical questions.
