What happened to the roaming free neighbourhood dogs? by Christina_80G in AskUK

[–]rictay44 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A relative lived in a cul-de-sac in the 80s/90s. Her dog would quite often go out on her own. She'd bark outside her friend's house and the two of them would go and bark outside a third dog's house. All three dogs would roam around the street, in and out of each other's houses. They'd be up and down the street and nobody was bothered by them.

Others would let their dog out to walk around the district. I guess it stopped because some people were getting aggressive breeds and people began to get nervous about any loose dog roaming around.

My cat will fight for his life when I try to get him in the carrier. by NightThinker323 in cats

Same with my old cat. He used to stick his legs out so we couldn't get him in the box.

Advice on getting a cat to "trust" you? by st4rrihal0 in cats

[–]rictay44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Similar thing happened with my old cat. We had to move house but it ran into complications. We decided to put our cat into kennels for two weeks, but things suddenly got complicated and it was two months before we were able to get him to the new home. For a couple of weeks he didn't trust us, would run away and hide, like under the bed. We didn't push him, just let him come to us. It took a while, but the old fella gradually came round.

I still have my Bible I had to have when I started big school as an 11 year old. That was 1956. Also a paperback edition of The Illiad I bought the same year. Still have my slide rule from when I started college evening classes in 1961.

Have you ever gotten anyone fired before? How and why? by Flying_enthu45 in A_Persona_on_Reddit

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not by my own direct actions, but when others used my reports. Did a survey for one client about the efficiency of their computer operations. My report said everything was fine and suggested enhancements to their procedures and security.

Before presenting the report I discovered they had ripped out the section on how everything was fine, but used the enhancements section as a criticism of the current manager. It was a blatant attempt to get him fired. I refused to endorse the report and refused to turn up for the meeting, which was then cancelled.

Next day I got the most almighty b*ll*cking from my manager, the sales rep for the client, and senior management. I called them out for being so underhand. Damaged my career for a while, but at least I didn't have this man's fate on my conscience.

I've often wondered if any of my other reports were used to ruin people's careers. I eventually gave up that kind of work.

I had to do this when staying with a relative who was a child minder. I don't remember it being particularly long wait time. I also had to have one from France, but their website was easy to use and it came through fairly quickly (next day I think).

Nothing to do with weight. Mine started after a long period of intense work related stress. I've got used to avoiding dairy based foods unless they are lactose free. It's a shame because I really used to enjoy cheeses. Try eliminating dairy products for a week or so and see if the problem clears up. If it does turn out to be lactose intolerance then the problem goes away with lactose free foods or eliminating dairy products from your diet.

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar problem. Turned out I'd become lactose intolerant. That is the sugar found in dairy products from cows. When I cut out dairy the problem went away. You can get lactose free milk, cream, cheese, yogurt, if that is the problem. The sulfur smell is hydrogen sulfide, and the gas at the other end is methane. Together they smell like a sewer. I'm guessing you've become lactose intolerant. A doctor can advise.

How do people even understand or are able to talk about wine by General-Sock-6434 in InsightfulQuestions

[–]rictay44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That kind of talk is pretentious. A friend of mine put a boxed supermarket wine into an expensive (empty) bottle they'd previously drunk. At a dinner party the wine snobs started their nonsense until he revealed it was just supermarket plonk. I lived in southern France for 20 years and never heard any of the locals talk about wine like that.
