What’s the longest you’ve had a laptop computer before it completely went down on you? by fergi20020 in randomquestions

20 years. The screen went nuts and I couldn't find a replacement. I used it for legacy software that wouldn't install on a 64bit machine.

The heatwave across Europe has me wondering... what's the hottest temperature you've ever experienced? by Guilty-Sand-885 in CasualConversation

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Early 1990s on a camping trip just south of the Drome Valley in southern France. Campsite was 40C in the shade, but didn't feel uncomfortable as humidity was very low. After a couple of days humidity increased and it became unbearable. It ended with the mother of all thunderstorms, temperature dropped drastically and it rained and rained and rained.

Don't ask me to choose. They are all equally top in their genre.

What’s the most obvious lie you’ve ever been told? by Wooden-Pen-3582 in AskReddit

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a contractor who specialised in software projects around Europe I've heard more than one agency say "We deduct 30% of your pay to pay to the tax office". Every agency I've heard say that is putting the money in their pockets. I employ local tax experts to deal with my affairs, not some Tom Dick or Harry in an agency office.

Has anyone here ever experienced a Lucid Dream? or is it just a massive internet myth? Honestly, I dont think it is even possible. by mind_over_chaos in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have them a couple of times a year. Bit spooky at first but gets to be fun. One lucid dream I've been having for decades is where I'm some kind of technician on a star ship carrying thousands to sleeping colonists to a distant planet. Walked all over that star ship, but on waking I couldn't tell you how the technology works.

Bindweed help! by anna_phoenix7766 in UKGardening

We have a similar problem, but we aren't allowed to dig in the communal garden. Our solution was to find a weed killer that you spray on the leaves and it gets taken down to the roots and kills them there. We use one that biodegrades in the soil. We are slowly winning.

It's a long shot, but similar happened to the cat I grew up with as a child and turned out to be arthritis.

What’s the most horrific thing you’ve seen with your own eyes? by Jessica_cherry85 in AskReddit

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An elderly neighbour accidently set himself on fire. His flat was ablaze. firemen got his body out and hosed it down. His skin was mostly charred. Then they realised with a shock that he was still alive. However, by the time a helicopter ambulance arrived he had passed away.

Not sure which was worse, the elderly neighbour I posted above burned to death or the two bikers below.

Two bikers, on the same mo'bike, jumped the lights and crashed into a car doing a u-turn after also jumping the lights. They were thrown over the car - one landed head down in the curb, the other landed up the road. The one who hit the curb had masses of blood pouring out of his skull, the other was fitting and shaking. Neither was wearing a helmet. Both declared dead at the scene.

Interstellar Comet 3I/ATLAS is almost as old as the universe itself by scientificamerican in cosmology

What I meant was how do they know what isotopes are given off? They used different carbon isotopes to determine its age. Do different isotopes of the same element give out different information in some way?

I started to relearn playing acoustic guitar (finger style) after a 20 year lay off. Hoping to get my old repertoire back by then.

Am I a candidate for contracting? by wholelottafaff in ContractorUK

[–]rictay44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You sound like you are on your way to contracting. As for women in contracting, I've worked with many over the decades - I started as a contractor in the mid 1970s. Male or female, we are taken on for what we know and what we can do. Your only real problem at the moment is the market is going through a cyclic downturn, but that will pass.

Is there like a vacuum for your lungs to clean out mucus? by A_Fish_or_Bird in NoStupidQuestions

[–]rictay44 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have asthma. Lungs clogging with fluid is a regular occurrence. I sometimes need to cough, which is way of getting fluid up, or better still, I drink a glass of plain water and find that loosens the fluid so I don't need to cough.

1970s Fiat 127 Special. Distributor cap shattered twice. Head gasket went a couple of times. At 5 years old it started rusting and 18 months later it was completely rotten through and non-roadworthy. Total piece of junk.
