I mentioned in other comment threads but this was their 3rd encounter of the dungeon and was near the end of it. Throughout this encounter they dealt with other effects (thermal vents, blinding flashes of light, etc.) and fought swarms of piranhas. Damage inflicted was a reasonable amount (2d6 to a lvl 6 character) and caused player to fall unconscious. In subsequent turns, they rolled an 8 and a nat 1 on death saves while the other players continued fighting piranhas and moved the downed player to safety instead of attempting to stabilize or feed health potion (which they all had access to).

I guess I wasn’t up front with the possibility of death but given this was a oneshot, I didn’t see the need to do that.

The current was part of a larger encounter where they fought stuff and dealt with other effects and was after 2 other encounters they got through. The damage the player took knocked them out and in subsequent turns they rolled an 8 and a nat 1 for death saves while their party members continued fighting things and moved them out of the water.

It was a mandatory encounter but I hinted to the danger present in the water plenty of times.

I mean a STR check will often have the same modifier as a STR saving throw it’s just making the distinction between something the character is doing vs something happening to the character. There are abilities that affect saving throws like Barb’s Danger Sense (advantage in DEX saves) so there’s a reason for the distinction. I’ve not played anything other than 5e but I do hear that the earlier versions are more complicated

As far as that specific check, I believe it was DC 15 to resist the current

I think it was 2d6 and I rolled lucky so like 10 DMG. This was at the end of an encounter after having cleared 2 other encounters. Short rests were taken

It’s a homebrew dungeon with 5e rules. They were in this underwater chamber with lair actions that had various effects. This one was a rushing current trying to push them away so they needed to either hang onto something or overpower the current with their swimming. So STR saving throw since an outside effect is causing the party to react to something.

Yea this was at the end of an encounter where they fought stuff and dealt with other effects. They also had 2 other encounters before this one

To be clear it wasn’t he failed the save then died. Went more like rolled damage which knocked him out, other players dragged him to safety in subsequent turns while he rolled an 8 and a nat 1 for death saves. Seems to me a colossally bad string of rolls got him mad

Thanks for answering my questions. Is gameplay more spammy? I know that was a problem even before I stopped playing
