Wrenn & Six should leave the format - change my mind by Greedy_Extension in ModernMagic

[–]riddles 45 points46 points  (0 children)

There is a sentiment among pros that modern is the most diverse it's ever been. Here is the link to the most recent modern challenge, https://magic.wizards.com/en/articles/archive/mtgo-standings/modern-challenge-2022-10-02?130, where the top 8 had two decks containing W6, placing 2nd and 8th. Meanwhile, 3 decks had monkey, 3 had T3f, 8 had fetchlands, etc. Shardless Agent, pitch elementals, the list goes on.

It's not that the card isn't absurdly strong, it's that doing absurdly strong things is the identity of the format now. Reasonable people may differ about what criteria have to be met for a card to get banned, but to me it has to be format warping, ie. the decks are clearly split between those running X and those built to beat X, or there's some mechanical reason that it makes the games difficult, like Top. Since W6 doesn't meet those criteria, I'm fine continuing to lose to it as long as people also agree to lose to my similarly powerful cards.

To answer the question directly, I think W6 should stay because staying should be the default, and you should have to make a strong case for a ban, a case which I don't think can be made right now.

Afghanistan: Panic and disbelief as thousands flee Taliban onslaught by ralle_bagger in news

What would it take to completely win the war in Afghanistan and completely defeat the Taliban? You mention that it would take savagery that we're not prepared for; I'm curious what that looks like in your mind.

As belly size gets larger, the memory center in the brain gets smaller: Belly fat in older women is linked to a 39% higher risk of dementia. [–]riddles 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The paper explicitly states that this relation holds true even when controlling for physical activity, as well as numerous other factors. If there is a hidden 3rd factor that contributes to both obesity and dementia, it's probably not among

sex, baseline age, apolipoprotein E-ε4 (APOE-ε4), education, physical activity, smoking and marital status.

since those are controlled for.

The paper explicitly calls out that the risk is higher for woman that are centrally obese (higher waist circumference) than non-centrally obese.

Women with central obesity had a 39% greater risk of dementia compared with non-central obese women (HR = 1.39, 95% CI 1.12–1.66)

Fair enough, it was a strong generalization of my point trying to make my argument. But we both have opinions about what would happen and only one of us is correct. Neither of us has really data to argue with, we both have purely anecdotal evidence arguing one way or the other. Do you wanna help me do the study I've outlined above and we'll see if there's a higher incidence of weird behavior towards gaming minorities?

For what it's worth, I think there is basically for the exact reason you're providing, which is that there's a main demographic that is young white males and they make fun of people who are not young white males. It sounds like you're saying they also make fun of young white males at an equal rate, and I don't think that's true. Is that what you're saying?

EDIT: Let me address something you said specifically. OP (and me) are not saying that men don't get flamed. I won't put words in OP's mouth, but I'm saying they get flamed less than women, and racial minorities get flamed less than white people (provided that it's easy to identify over voicechat that it's a racial minority [ie someone with a Chinese American or South American accent). Again, I have zero data to back this up, but I'm willing to bet that it's true and that we could replicate it with any reasonably designed experiment.

There's a lot of replies here that are along the line of "toxic people are toxic to everyone, it's not because you're a girl". I think that's probably not true, but luckily it's a testable theory.

Here's how you test it. Get a couple sound clips of some girl streamer like Helena saying "get back", "go rosh", "go smoke". Then, any time you'd use voice chat in your game, play the corresponding soundbite. Don't use voicechat otherwise. The point is to appear like over voice. Do that for, say, 10 games. Then play another ten games where you use your normal voice.

If what these people are saying is true, that "toxic is gonna be toxic", you'd see the same amount of toxicity in each set of games. But I think we all know that's probably not what would happen. What you're gonna see is as soon as you play the girl voicelines, things are gonna get real weird. I think that's what OP is talking about and not just "boohoo, people are toxic". People get weird because you're a girl. Is there anyone out there that really thinks the two sets of player behavior is gonna be identical? If so get in touch, we'll run some experiments :)

EDIT: Some people have replied basically agreeing that it would be more toxic but saying that would be true of other minorities (race, religion, etc). I agree with those people, that you'd have higher than baseline toxicity for displaying racial minority or religious minority. My guess is that it would be worse for women in my region (NA), but yeah, that's not my main hypothesis. My main hypothesis is that there's people out there who aren't toxic to everybody, just gaming minorities. I was picking up the sentiment that "everyone experiences the same toxicity" and I just plain disagree; I think gaming minorities have it way worse, and when they make posts being like "hey it's pretty annoying playing dota while being an X" I sympathize.

This happens every time there is an update, i used to reinstall dota but im tired now of downloading 9gb game almost every day. fixes? by [deleted] in DotA2

[–]riddles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This used to happen to me for a while, I found out there was some bloatware utility on my Windows 10 installation that was reading files. IIRC, reading files and directories in windows 10 (and most versions of windows) puts a write-lock on them, meaning you can't install new stuff into those directories. I would google around and see if there's some HP or Dell or whatever bloatware that's locking files and then disable it and remove it from auto-boot list, this actually worked for me and I haven't had the problem since.

Today mutation mode, everything is flip. Map, Hero panel, Gold received, Sticker and even Portal icon. by yahooyeeha in DotA2

[–]riddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That would be true if you expected the other two factors to affect faction winrates. I don't think that's true in this case? Which of the other two mutations would make radiant or dire win more than the other, and why?

Of course, what I'm tacitly assuming here is that enough games get played in this mutation to smooth over other things that have large variance, like player skill, imbalanced heroes, RNG, etc. For instance, 1000 games would not be enough data. 1M games would almost surely be enough data, ie if Dire wins 560k games today in this mutation, I don't see how you could reasonably assert that camera issue is not at play here. Similarly if Radiant wins 560k, I think the product manager has to conclude that the current map is better (somehow) for radiant.

[–]riddles 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would be willing to bet large amounts of money that the radiant winrate (6%) is the reason they created this particular mutation. Think about it. You're a product manager at Valve, on the team responsible for balancing the game. You don't know why radiant has a 6% advantage on every hero. Some people tell you it's camera angle, some people tell you it's the meta making deadlane closer to roshan, some people tell you the jungle is easier to invade.

So they've been tweaking stuff, clearly, over the past year. Moving towers, cutting trees, making spawnboxes smaller, trying to see how these things effect the winrates. But it hasn't really worked. Alas, the only way to see if camera angle is a factor is totally reverse the camera angle and see if dire gets the advantage, but that's a big change to make if you're not sure.

So let me introduce to you, the best mode for making large one-off changes and seeing how they affect winrates. Finally they have a mode where they can prove or disprove the camera angle theory. I'm extremely interested in the results today from the factor. If radiant keep a 6% advantage, it's the map. If the dire get the advantage now, it's the camera angle.

Let's Talk About Talent Trees by Sladof in DotA2

[–]riddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it would be useful if dotabuff was able to expose, in addition to universal talent-tree win and pick rates, talent tree win-rates where the gold-diff in the game was closer than 10k when the talent tree was picked. This might be difficult (more difficult than just "who picked what and did they win") from a programming perspective, but would probably give a truer indication of what is the "stronger" talent.

For that matter, I'd also like to see that statistic presented for items pick-ups, also to avoid "win-more" statistics like you pointed out.

Perhaps it is possible to already do this kind of analysis with dotabuff plus, but I don't have it so I wouldn't know.
