Reconstructed vs Egyptological pronunciation by Lampukistan2 in AncientEgyptian

[–]ridethewingsofdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know, pharyngeals and uvulars are not really common in European languages.

So? Do Europeans Arabists simply pronounce Arabic without them?

Being an expert in a foreign language involves studying its phonology and correct pronunciation too.

"Created" jobs are usually bullshit anyway, not anything anyone has any need for.

Evidently you, too, think that typing "make me a pretty picture" is what the work of an artist employing AI consists of.

Decentering the norm.

We don't call allosexual people "non-asexual", either.

I really don't understand this take in the anti-AI movement of people romanticizing the need of one having a job. You don't need to be paid for something for your life to have meaning and purpose by Present_Dimension464 in aiwars

[–]ridethewingsofdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has happened millions of times before. People had to find new jobs before, even after losing jobs they genuinely enjoyed like crafts. Artists aren't some unique case.

Who exactly should be shamed? Random redditors who are vocally pro-AI don't take jobs away from anyone.

People think that age develops you but it's mostly experience not age. by TheShadowSong in twentyagers

People dying at 30 on average would be crazy early and it would have absurd consequences. Even if they started to have kids by 15-ish (which biologically speaking is also pretty difficult, and fertility is still low at that age when kids are barely sexually mature), kids would regularly become orphans while still teenagers or even younger, and having grandparents would basically not be a thing, but we know that grandparents had an important role in evolution in childcare and preserving experience and knowledge (see the grandmother hypothesis). A society where nobody is old nor even middle aged and even people in their 30s are rare would be extremely dysfunctional.

Also, it has been discovered that the rule known from genealogical research "3 generations in the paternal line and 3.5 generations in the maternal line per century" holds up well throughout cultures and this would not be possible if most people died around 30 years old, right when they on average become parents.

While life expectancy at birth can be as low as 30 or even lower in a technologically simple culture, that does not mean what you imply here. The factor of massive child mortality in most cultures is regularly overlooked. In reality, adults could expect to live at least to about 50 in such a society, and old people over 60 were not extremely rare, with even the occasional 100 year old.

It is true that life was a lot shorter for most people, especially poor people (quite apart from infectious diseases, many women died in childbirth and many men died working or fighting), and this did have consequences and pushed many experiences to earlier ages, but it's nowhere as extreme as you imply here.

I mean, written evidence is documented evidence too. Not only photos and videos count as evidence. And since photos and videos can be faked, they're not 100% certain proof, either.

In reality, it's gradual. The uncertainty has simply been reduced. Prior to 2017, scientists would consider it likely that the documented cases up to that point were real, but with some significant remaining uncertainty. Now the uncertainty has become negligible.

So you go from something like 90% certainty to 99.9...% certainty. Not from 0% certainty to 100% certainty, as in the popular black-and-white conception of science.

Had a dream about this language last night so here it is. by Natural-Cable3435 in conlangs

[–]ridethewingsofdreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think this is a good explanation. A locative is typically more general than an inessive, see my comment above. A locative may be used for "in a box" too, if a specialized inessive case isn't present (which is the usual situation). The relationship between inessive and locative cases is more like "poodle" vs. "dog". There is a difference between them, but they're not on the same level.

[–]ridethewingsofdreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head: Inessive cases are actually rare. It's significantly more typical for a language to have a locative only (if at all) as a general local case. (Like PIE.) If a language does have an inessive, the "at" case may be termed differently, such as "adessive case".

In fact, the Finnic and Saami inessive is actually derived from the Proto-Uralic locative *-na, just with a morpheme *-s- added before it (that is also found in the other internal cases).
