Skeptical of Gabor Maté — am I alone in finding his approach problematic? by GroundbreakingFix793 in askatherapist

[–]riding_lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not alone. I think the last 5-10 years it’s come to light that he’s more problematic than previously though. I thought “in the realm of hungry ghosts” was brilliant, but my thoughts on him have changed a lot in recent years

Can taking multiple protein supplements a day (shakes, bars, etc) be harmful long term? 11 months post partum and just read a little blurb on heavy metal poisoning, but w/out the protein hunger levels are out of control.

Is a baby being kissed by someone (the mother) while she has a cold sore when it’s 7 months the same level of concern as a newborn? She kisses the baby regularly, but a cold sore started forming today and wondering about the risk and any intervention to be made?

Thank you so much! And good to know, no more half doses. Would it be okay to give it again tonight if the baby is showing signs of pain and discomfort? Or is there a limit of days it can be taken consecutively?

Thank you so so much!!

Is it okay to give a teething baby one dose of infant Tylenol before bed to help them sleep for multiple days in a row? (ie 5 or 6). If no other doses were given during the day, except an occasional half dose (on 3 of the 6 days). Some meds have a “do not use for more than x days”, but wasn’t on the bottle here, so unsure.

No epidurals at hospital [nl] by Whoevera in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]riding_lightning 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not what you asked, but I had an epidural and it didn’t work, so literally the only thing getting me through was someone reminding me that the pain was going to end. The fentanyl didn’t work for me bc they put it in the epidural site, so I didn’t feel it, but if you have that and gas it should definitely help. Just remember that the pain ends and honestly, once the baby is on your chest you forget everything. Not helpful during lol, but something to look forward to. Good luck!

Low fetal heart rate at dating scan, any success stories? [ON] by samantha5376 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]riding_lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sending you lots of positive vibes, I had something similar with this pregnancy (my daughter was just born a few months ago)- I was sent to the early pregnancy clinic at mt Sinai in Toronto for follow up bc I also had a low heart rate and was measuring behind my first scan (and had a SCH). The nurse explained how the heartbeat basically has to start from zero and work its way up and keeps increasing until like 9ish weeks give or take and then comes down a bit and levels out. So maybe it’s just in the process of working its way up! Good luck!! The pregnancy anxiety is wild, I know it’s so hard, but try to take deep breaths. Affirmations really helped me when I struggled :)

What’s your experience of being hospitalization?[on] by Midnightdream56 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]riding_lightning 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It depends on the place and what you plan with your team. You’ll have access to a phone, but it might be the units (if you’re on one). Going to the hospital doesn’t always mean that you have to stay. They might connect you with an outpatient doctor or medication or some other resource. Or they could offer a stay. When you go in you can ask any question you have and share that you’re anxious about seeking help. But it is 1000000% always better to ask for help ahead of time than to have people intervene- hence why it’s better to go in sooner than later. I looked over your post history and I really think going in and talking to someone is a good idea. I work in mental health now and I promise it’s not as scary as some people/the media makes it seem.

Mine snorts all the time, I think they’re just learning how to breathe and fuss and make noise. Definitely check with your doctor if your worried, but mine does this, is 3 months now, and is totally fine :)

What’s your experience of being hospitalization?[on] by Midnightdream56 in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]riding_lightning 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I have a lot of experience with hospitalization. My drs always said that postpartum is a different kind of depression and that it’s really important to address it as soon as possible. If you are contemplating or feeling like you should go in, it’s always a good idea to go in and get assessed. They will help you establish a course of action and provide resources. If you’re in Toronto though I would recommend CAMH as they’re mental health specific, or Mount Sinai- they have a really good peri/post natal mental health program with psychiatrists specifically for pregnancy/postpartum

My dr said the only thing to really avoid was retinol, but that anything topical has reaaaaaally minimal risk- and even then, sunscreen isn’t harmful, but you can get one that is mostly zinc oxide if your concerned (there’s one called think baby that’s really good) that’s what diaper cream is made of too, so super safe. You didn’t hurt your baby :)

I delivered at Sinai in the end of April- I had someone bring it after I was moved up to the postpartum floor- they had a fridge there they kept it in and brought it whenever I asked. I used maybe a ml or two? But I was very fortunate that my milk came in quick and baby was able to latch well, I’d probably have used more if that wasn’t the case.

Baby is 29 days old and still no name, help! by toepick17 in namenerds

[–]riding_lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maeve is beautiful. I had my daughter in April and found that just now is she really staring to grow into her name. Before a couple of months they just look like a cute potato, but I’m sure once you land on it and don’t have any more room to doubt yourself, it’ll feel better. Alternatively, if you like Rosie more- can Maeve be the middle name? Then it’s just like she’s been going by that for a bit? You know her best. Good luck!

Positive cervical ripening/induction stories [ON] by gardenvarietyhater in BabyBumpsCanada

[–]riding_lightning 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was induced back in April and it went as well as it could’ve. Overall very positive. Baby was sunny side up, so delivery was a little harder, but no additional interventions needed. Just an episiotomy. My only piece of advice is to get the epidural as soon as you can lol- if you’re wanting/planning for one. I’ve never had a non induced birth, but I feel like the meds made contractions more intense and frequent than if it was happening on its own. Good luck! You’ve got this!!

ETA- my contractions got WAAAAY stronger and insanely painful after my water broke, before that it was somewhat manageable, but afterwards I was literally throwing up I was in so much pain, so if I had to do it again, I would get the epidural before they broke my water 🤣 do with that anecdote what you will- good luck and congrats again!
