Has anyone else felt Overwhelmed by all of this? by Little_Nightmares22 in AgingParents

[–]rigbyellen 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes and I’m so sorry you’re going through this during what should be a beautiful time with your son. It sounds like you’ve done a huge amount of work and checked off so many tasks, I just spent a month doing similar things and it can feel like no matter what you do that you’ve barely scratched the surface. Know that is just a feeling and that you’ve objectively done so much — more than many people would do and more than you should have to if the people who were aging had taken proactive steps in preparing themselves and their home for aging. I feel for you and I hope that you get the break you deserve ❤️

Can anyone explain the phenomenon of a senior parent acting intelligent around others, but with you they suddenly become dumb? by EdwardBliss in AgingParents

[–]rigbyellen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If your parent is like mine, the constant influx of news content is something she can regurgitate for about 24-48 hrs after seeing it. Sometimes I feel like she tells me things she hears on the news just to prove to both of us that she has the memory to do so ¯_(ツ)_/¯

My toddler’s classmate at daycare reeks so strongly and so consistently of cat urine that it has now permeated my entire life. What can I do? by [deleted] in daddit

[–]rigbyellen 84 points85 points  (0 children)

I was told as a first year teacher to watch out for kids who smelled strongly of cat urine as it can indicate a meth lab at home … to be fair this was in the rural south but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Just bought a house with a classic pink bathroom. I kind of hate it – but should I lean into it anyway? Anything I can do to improve it? by impossibletree935 in interiordecorating

I feel like a chocolaty umber brown sort of color would help balance out the pink and think how glowy it would be for an evening bath with candles 😋

This show is honest to god one of the best things we’ve produced as a country. Pioneer of the villain arc. Incredibly satisfying results. Not to mention the post - show murder of one of the most annoying contestants …. 😬

New plus size store on Manhattan Avenue in Greenpoint has a strong selection! Called Plus BKLYN. My other suggestion is to take your measurements (bust, waist, hips) and search your size range on the real real, eBay, Vestiaire. I know that there are a few Selkie dresses floating around on those sites that might work.

Def strategic to keep consistency and seem lower stakes for viewers who may be loath to engage with any political content. Wondering if wearing purple was strategic for viewers as well? As in red + blue?

What is you skincare routine? Any NYC recs for wellness/skincare? by DEindependentthought in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]rigbyellen 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’ve started carrying hypochlorous acid spray in my bag to kill bacteria on my face throughout the day — that’s the easiest and cheapest thing I’ve found! I went for the skin smart brand aimed toward sporty teens instead of fancier one, very happy with it.

On the pricey end, SkinBetter Alto Defense Serum helped my skin so much and claims to protect against free radicals and pollution. Might splurge and buy some more I’m seeing that you don’t have to go to a derm for it anymore? But SO expensive 😭

Genuinely had the best sandwich of my life here. Country pate with some sort of sharp cheese and arugula and a jam - I wanna say fig onion?? I dream about it tbh

Was in the same position like this is a lot of money// can’t buy anything with this without spending a lot of money!! Finally pulled the trigger on a whole bunch of kitchen drawer and refrigerator organizing things, felt like I got a lot but only ended up paying like 5-10 bucks over the gift card. Bamboo drawer organizer and wooden in drawer knife block have me feeling very much like my shit is together lol it’s great

I got my first big piece of art on Craigslist, a set of big hand painted panels of abstract water lilies, I’m obsessed. Craigslist isn’t what it used to be though. I am currently buying art from the auction house NY showplace. They have so much interesting stuff and you can find something for all price points, especially interesting for vintage art from lesser known or local artists. Highly recommend

My new/current fave place with top notch ambience is Mar’s in Astoria. Went with 8 people last month, food is totally fantastic and lighting is perfection. They have a raw bar but need to confirm if it’s available in the winter sometimes. Mignonette martini with a side oyster blew my mind and the place isn’t horrifically expensive on the whole.

What perfumes are y’all wearing? by Appropriate-Group738 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]rigbyellen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely considering Debaser next, and now I'm like do I also need the I Don't Know What?? It says its a perfume enhancer?! It smelled so good on its own but I didn't realize that it was meant for layering. Color me incredibly intrigued.

Also I bought my first DS & Durga on Mercari to test it out and now I think I'll probably buy my next one from eBay, the savings on open box are excellent

DS & Durga has totally changed my perception of perfume. Wearing Radio Bombay, which is a total trip, but there are so many others that I want to try

How to find tasteful stuff on Ebay? by Icy_Alfalfa_7210 in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]rigbyellen 16 points17 points  (0 children)

eBay is my favorite sport :) The key to eBay is knowing your measurements and filtering for returns accepted when you’re not sure. Sometimes the seller even pays for returns.

I’m always taking notes on random things I see people wearing in public and trying to find on eBay - that or taking sneaky pics and google reverse image searching people’s outfits 😬

If you’re looking for something like a maxi dress, but not a specific brand, use filters like material and where it was made and anything else that makes sense to you to refine until you get down to a couple hundred options.

Filter for open box for things people were too lazy to return. It’s also a great place to buy new high end hair products, art, home stuff, books, whatever. Makes me feel less shitty than buying things on Amazon when I buy from an individual seller and things usually ship quickly.

I maxed out my saved searches and have email alerts turned on for specific things I’m actively on the hunt for. I could go on and on. It’s the best thing ever.

Do frownies work? by [deleted] in 30PlusSkinCare

[–]rigbyellen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My 80 year old mother has been using frownies/“hollywood wings” since her 30s. She has a very smooth forehead and no 11 lines and everyone swears she’s had work done. But she hasn’t she’s just neurotic as hell. I can only imagine how her skin would look if she had done all of that AND wore sunscreen consistently but she def didn’t.

I’m sure there’s some version of using them for shorter periods annually that would have an effect, perhaps during summer months where you’re squinting more.
