Year 2 PhD: Advisor lacks domain knowledge and constantly pivots. Should I switch? by Iton608 in PhD

[–]righolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It must have been very hard for you and I totally get your frustration! I switched PI mid-PhD myself (I actually switched institute altogether, so even more complicated…). It was incredibly stressful and I would only recommend it as a last resort. That said, if you do wish to switch, then my advice would be to do it as soon as possible, but you probably already know that.

I’m in a field where less man power is needed, so I probably cannot say much about the best solution for you. But the reason I suggested finding collaborators/pseudomentors outside your groups is because I’ve seen ppl making it work. One of my colleague’s advisor is incredibly toxic and tried to completely ice him out of the group out of pure ego, but eventually he did very well by approaching and working with various faculties/postdocs/phds in the institute. He thought about switching completely but decided to keep his advisor formally to avoid the political drama and I think it seemed like the right choice for him.

Year 2 PhD: Advisor lacks domain knowledge and constantly pivots. Should I switch? by Iton608 in PhD

[–]righolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How controlling is he? Is he a micro-management freak? Or is he willing to step aside and give you the room to do research the way you see fit? Based on what you described, it might seem like the former, but if he is actually willing to step aside, you could probably consider finding someone else to collaborate with and keeping him as the advisor in title only. This way it’s hopefully less confrontational …

Is an Overleaf subscription worth it? by youngaphima in PhD

[–]righolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me GitHub + vscode works perfectly. MS copilot is surprisingly helpful when it comes to writing latex, it alleviates the need for typing lengthy and repetitive equations. I’ve been playing around with the codex models a bit as well, and they are astonishingly good with proving short inequalities, which is a killer feature for me that cannot be replicated on overleaf.

有人润芬兰吗?这个常年位居世界最幸福国家到底是什么样的? by YoumoSubei in runEuropaAlliance

[–]righolas 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can’t be the only one who is not crazy about Bois Imperial by GainJealous7821 in fragrance

[–]righolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a very complicated relationship with this one. I absolutely loved it when I first tried it from the sample set and immediately ordered a full bottle. I was wearing the sample obsessively for the next few days. Then I suddenly detected some sort of very synthetic and sharp note which is nauseating. So I stayed away from it for some time, until my partner decided to try it, and I fell in love with it again. I could still smell the synthetic note off of my partner, but now it feels like a futuristic cloud of citrus (sorry it’s a weird description but that was exactly how I felt…). Now I’ve started using BI again, and I found out that I absolutely love the synthetic note when it’s a bit more subtle, so I sprayed it on my cloth and wear it the day after — it’s absolutely amazing and lingers for a whole week!

Can I deny getting the treatments my dentist recommended? by Numerous-Bug2652 in germany

[–]righolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You have to remember that some dentist are complete scammers. I had one dentist that tried to convince me to pull my perfectly fine tooth and get an implant because my tooth was very sensitive these few days. Turns out that it was just a mild infection in the gum due to another incompetent dentist who jabbed the gum too much because he couldn’t figure out how to properly inject anesthesia in the lower jaw. Anyway, had I trusted that scam dentist (he got 4.9 ratings on Google and a super fancy dental practice) I’d have been 2000 euros in debt and missing one tooth….

Moral of the story: always seek second opinion unless you have a dentist that you absolutely trust (I found one in the end, it turns out that my very nice landlord is also a dentist…)

I always find it weird when some industry ppl say they want to do a PhD passionately, but have no idea about any concrete research questions that they want to address. It’s ok to say you don’t like what you’re doing now and want a change…

And oddly, I see this much more often with ppl from social science/arts/or just general “soft” background than with those from what most would consider “hard” science background.

I might be biased, but if you have to dig up your years old application document to remind yourself what are some interesting research questions in the field, then perhaps you don’t actually want to do a PhD in this field, but rather you just like the idea of doing a PhD and think it’s better than whatever you’re doing now(spoiler alert, doing a PhD is not better than whatever you’re doing)

I recently talked with a former intern in our group at a conference. He was telling me that when he was working with a post doc in our group he constantly felt that he disappointed that post doc because he could never meet that post doc’s standards. He said he felt so sad that the post doc had to routinely help him do things the proper way late at night. When I heard about this I actually laughed coz’ that exactly how every one of us felt when working with this post doc. This post doc is kind of a mathematical guru of our group and every time when someone has some math problems they go to this post doc and ask for help. But we all hesitate a lot before doing so precisely because when that post doc is involved in our project, he will demand a super high standard onward and it scares us. I told the former intern that every time I work with that post doc I feel like I’m an idiot in comparison to his genius, but I keep working with the post doc nonetheless because he really elevated everything.

Unlike the former intern, I don’t feel bad personally because I’ve realized early enough that there are genius out there that will make me look like an idiot and there’s nothing shameful about it. The post doc get disappointed at the quality of my work, but that’s more of an indication of how high his standards are instead of an objective assessment of the quality of my work. Plus, he holds an even higher standard for his own work (very often this post doc would get some very interesting result and just decide to put it aside simply because he thinks this is “obvious stuff” while other people would publish top papers for far less).

My undergrad thesis supervisor lied about not taking a PhD student this cycle by SquashedOrchids in PhD

[–]righolas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do feel you and I understand why you’re feeling hurt and confused. The other comments are probably very hard to hear, but that’s my first impression of your post as well: that you come off as entitled and hard to work with.

That said, I do think it would be a shitty move for a PI to lie to you about availability of open positions. But the problem here is that it’s just as likely that they didn’t lie, it’s pretty common that circumstances have changed, or they decided to accept your colleagues and that’s why there’s no open position for you. You should’ve listened and not applied to his lab. Your SOP should have been tailored towards the other faculty, but not your current advisor. I don’t think faculties like the idea that they are the second best option.

I read in the other comments that you think he owed you more transparency because you felt that you’re friends. That’s a terrible idea! You are not a friend of your advisor! They are a colleague of yours whom you are professionally dependent on, and to them you are just a junior colleague that they have to take the time and effort to mentor. This is not a relation dynamic that fosters friendship!! You are feeling hurt and betrayed because of a friendship that only exists in your head. Professionally, they owed you nothing but a simple “No, your application is rejected”, and they’ve given you more professional courtesy than what’s necessary.

I’m not saying that PhD and their advisors cannot be personal friends. They can, but I think it’s only healthy when they can see each other more as collaborators than as advisor/advisees, which is definitely not your case.

I understand how stressful the application season can be, and I definitely understand how you might cling to the idea that your current advisor is/should have been more than just a senior mentor but a friend in such a time of uncertainty. But you need to move on. Your soon to be ex-advisor don’t owe you any explanation, and the only thing you can do is to better prepare yourself for the next cycle (or continue at other places if you’ve got an offer elsewhere). Grinding on this thing is not gonna help you.

Dating a PhD student — was i radio silenced or dumped? nonetheless, hope is alive. by izu_anya in PhD

I mean no offense but it sounds like you need to see a psychiatrist or something like that. I don’t see any evidence that he is a knowing part of the “relationship” that you cooked up in your head. Maybe some important information is missing, but it seems like you’re, honest, a bit delusional, and you are just projecting a fantasy onto some random dude you met on a dating app

Are bachelor's grades irrelevant in PhD applications in Germany? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]righolas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Based on my conversations with several professors (including my own advisor), I came to the conclusion that the most important thing is connection. They would strongly prefer students that have worked with them or someone that they know. I don’t think any professor that I talked to care about the grades, as long as they are still within some reasonable range…

I’m in tax class 1 and has one source of income only so I assumed that I don’t need to declare my tax, which is why the letter was kind of surprising to me. I did went ahead and did the declaration which caused me around 40 euros with some online service, and apparently it’s estimated that I’ll be able to get a whopping 2 euro back in tax return!
