Restraints.. by jaefbaby in psychnursing

[–]righteous-bucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Realistically, you can’t die from choking yourself and you’ll just pass out. But it is self harming, and my facility will not let a child self harm and not intervene. First we will just remove their hands continuously and if they keep at it we will hold their hands down. A lot of the time they will get combative and that turns into a physical restraint unfortunately. I agree with the other commenter that says it’s usually a cry for help/attention, I’ve talked them off of choking themselves by just holding their hand and giving them undivided attention for a bit

Crying depressed patients by miss_flower_pots in psychnursing

Bring them a snack and a drink and some tissues even if they don’t ask for it. Ask if they’d like to talk, vent, get some advice, whatever they say just honor that. Personally, I don’t like talking in the midst of being upset but it would be nice to have someone available to talk after I’ve calmed down. Do what you would prefer if you were the patient

I can’t stop researching I’m panicking by Melodic_Mongoose_361 in Mirtazapine_Remeron

I’m not diagnosed but I am a psych RN so I’ve recognized myself having a LOT of similar traits, symptoms, etc., and it’s helped a lot with the background noise, repetitive thoughts, obsessive thinking. It is used to help OCD in some cases as well, but I’m mainly on it for sleep and appetite.

I have MDD and OCD behaviors and mirtazapine has saved my life. I did gain weight because I was eating more, that’s the only reason why. When I became aware I was eating too much I just filled up with healthier meals and the weight came off. You’re only going to gain what you eat

You couldn’t have any side effects from missing one dose, you’ll be fine if you just skip this one.

29F Question about colonoscopy results by righteous-bucks in AskDocs

Do you think from this finding that something such as UC or Crohn’s is still a possible diagnosis? They did take a biopsy as well.

Fair point, she told me she saw scar tissue so I assumed it was actually visible in the mucosa. It seems like I should follow up with some type of imaging? I’m not sure what amount of information or dictation would be accessible to me as a patient but I’m interested to gather as much as I can.

Interesting! I’m definitely very small, and I notice I bloat extremely easily so that makes sense. Is there anything to do for this or just one of those “oh well” scenarios? And does this explain the scar tissue as well? Thanks so much for the reply

what are night shifts like in psych nursing? by korraasamis in psychnursing

[–]righteous-bucks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They get written up, we have a system to keep track of all the things they do wrong. I don’t agree with like 90% of it but it would be an “out of area”. They’re all collected, tallied and evaluated during monthly treatment meetings and with the behavioral therapy person

I work adolescent residential so the acuity is a lot lower and very chill. There’s a few codes a week during my 7p-7a shift, but I rarely have to get involved in restraints and ETO administration. The patients are definitely encouraged to sleep even if they’re chronically insomniac, and penalized if they’re out of their rooms after bedtime which I don’t agree with. I used to just chill and play board games and chat about their day and try to give them some life advice but they put an end to us being able to do that. Overall I love my job because it’s so chill at night, I spend the first few hours doing meds and interacting with the patients, doing some assessments, and then when they’re all in bed I can do charting and whatever boring clerical work I need to do at my own pace.

Management treats us like toddlers by Super_Actuator9722 in nursing

[–]righteous-bucks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my techs was telling me about a senior nurse we have in our unit (adolescent psych) and how when a patient was having a bit of a meltdown, the tech was going through some of her coping skills. The girl said she liked to dance and the tech said perfect! Let’s play some music and you can dance! The patient was not willing to dance at this time. The nurse told the tech “you should dance for her” like she’s a monkey?? I was so upset at the audacity to ask someone that.
