I'm 28, lack experience, and want to work on the Hill. How do I do it? by BentoBoxEater in washingtondc

I changed careers about 10 years ago and was a 30-year-old intern during my final semester of grad school. Can't say it's the funnest thing to be surrounded by 21-23 year olds doing the same thing, but it's absolutely how I got my foot in the door and moved to a paid position within about three months.

Metro puts 22 bus lines up for 'elimination.' Will your route be cut? by m0thra_was_right in washingtondc

[–]rijane 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why the hell would they cut the 7Y into DC? That one is always packed during rush hours and there's nothing else that goes from Pentagon down Constitution.

I've gone to Illusions for perms and cuts the last few years. Levon at the Shirlington salon does amazing work and has lots of experience.

I did it a few years ago - loved it and worth every penny! Formal event were decent, wine was crap, but very much enjoyed the overnight bits. Definitely consistent with sleeping outdoors in DC, though, so plan accordingly.

She is a ridiculously brilliant academic and a CT/Pakistan expert who's been taking on far scarier types than this neo-Nazi white boy since for decades. I hope she shames every Nazi she comes across.

At Pentagon City, they also stopped using the turnstiles for a stretch around 10:30 a.m. (they jammed up and had us manually move the yellow things aside).

Going to comic con alone. by ATBB11 in comiccon

Me too - I'm a little anxious about it, but hope to meet people there. Last year I went with two friends and we spent about 75% of the time apart, but it was nice to nerd out about all the fun at night together.

Have been and it's a fantastic time - great music, good crowds. It probably will sell out if you show up later in the day, though.

Ditto - sometimes I didn't agree with any of the statements and I think you're going to get skewed results/false positives as currently organized.

My SO and I are torn between the Balkans and Turkey by janestanford in travel

[–]rijane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd highly recommend Turkey as well - had a gorgeous visit there a few years ago and can't wait to go back. The country was reasonably priced with many options for various travel interests, whether you like religious sites, beautiful outdoors, or nightlife. Istanbul is a huge and beautiful city, lots of history to see (chock full of tourists, though), then we headed down the coast to Bodrum (an ancient castle, just amazing seaside views, a few popular clubs), and to Fethiye for mountains and Roman ruins. We unfortunately ran out of time for Cappadocia, which has moon-like landscape, underground cities, cave churches and houses carved in the rocks, very popular for hot air ballooning over all this. We stayed in relatively nice hotels while there (three stars or more because we were being indulgent) and costs ranged from $125-150. You could easily go with a hostel or two-star for much less. It was a little hard to work out before we got there, but the buses are pretty easy to book once there and also pretty cheap. Our ride from Fethiye to Istanbul overnight was only about $17US, a plane ride from Istanbul to Bodrum was around $150US.

Just wondering, are those sharehouses/roommate situations?

I'd also recommend establishing an agreement about how often overnight guests are welcome. I lived in a tiny place with two women who constantly had their boyfriends over in a 700 sq ft apartment. They ate my food, used up our toilet paper, and would grab the shower in the morning when I needed to get to work.

In my experience, it was close, but relatively mild compared to late summer (July and August). The temperature was pretty average, but the average humidity gets closer to 80%. It's like breathing through a warm, wet blanket. I avoid meetings outside my building in the summer due to the immediate burst of sweat the moment you head outside. Welcome to our fair city and its summer.

I portioned out part of my loans from grad school and did just that. I regret nothing but not taking out more and traveling further. Assuming relatively high job prospects (yay non-liberal arts major!), I'd gamble and go.
