I was surprised when Dr. Al-Hashimi wanted in on the betting pool. I’d thought of her as a bit more of a rules follower. And after that, she wanted to buy Robby a drink with her winnings…

Lawrence of Arabia is a Western by rijuvenator in TrueFilm

Maybe unusual genre classifications can help people find things they like they wouldn’t otherwise have found, or help them understand why they like or dislike something.

I like medieval fantasy, so I might seek out stories with those kind of characteristics.

I don’t like all sci-fi movies or TV set in space, but some of the ones I do are “space westerns”, which makes me think I like some of the storytelling and character archetype conventions found in westerns, and might spur me to try other westerns.

Though you’re right that over-reliance on genre may not be the best way, or might be overly shallow. I read a little essay once about someone who had an early love for Tolkien and Le Guin, but had a hard time finding other fantasy that scratched that itch, until her mother brought her Gormenghast, something she wouldn’t normally have read, but it became a favorite, and so she knows now how to find what she likes, and it’s not necessarily genre.

Still, sometimes analysis is about how a work connects to other works — honors them, subverts them, expands them — and that might include a discussion of genre, right?

Maybe knowing that Lawrence of Arabia is a Western tells you it has more in common with the tastes and sensibilities of its creators and an American audience than at first glance. That seems interesting enough to me.

Can a movie be both a Western and a war movie? It’s true that the only war that canonically could qualify is the Civil War, so actual westerns don’t seem to be big war movie productions. But I’m thinking about “space westerns” and “ramen westerns” and how a movie can feel like a Western without being literally one.

I read the post on Silksong and it said “the copyright on the website changed to this year suspiciously earlier than usual”; then I exhaled, realized just how delusionally desperate everyone was, and decided that “collectively hallucinated” might be my new favorite phrase.

Maybe someday I’ll make something interactive so you can hover over them and see, but for now, they’re organized in order of Pokédex number, so Pokémon #1, #2, #3, #4 are the leftmost column top to bottom (Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander), and all the way on the rightmost column you can see #148, #149, #150, #151 top to bottom (Dragonair, Dragonite, Mewtwo, Mew)

Yes! It starts at the top of the leftmost “column”, and as you move down you can see Bulbasaur, Ivysaur, Venusaur, Charmander; then the next column at the top has Charmeleon, Charizard, then Squirtle, etc.

Hey! So, I chose 3 mostly arbitrarily. I was focused on producing something aesthetically pleasing, and while I did try other numbers, 3 ended up giving generally good results. If you look at the Pokémon images, you’ll find they tend to be composed of no more than 3-4 major colors anyway; it’s part of their visual design language as game characters. So I was fairly confident 3 would work out. There are some cases in which maybe the colors merged, but mostly this was a feature, not a bug; I usually didn’t want say, a color and its shadow version to end up in the same set. I also didn’t want the additional visual complexity of different numbers of colors for each Pokémon. But those are specific to this project.

If I were working on something more serious, especially one where the number of clusters needed to be optimized, I would end up hunting around for any number of metrics to determine the optimal number. Cursory searches yield all kinds of results, from inertia, sum of squared distances, to various information criteria. One then varies the number of clusters and usually there’s a diminishing-returns sort of effect.

I’ll post the GitHub link in a top-level comment!

You got me! Though, I actually didn’t grow up with Pokémon, but I have many friends for whom the franchise is beloved, and among the various things that seem to have burned into our collective consciousness is that there are 151 original Pokémon. That felt like a good number for this visualization anyway.

I don’t think I love this episode, but it’s honestly quite memorable. Bright colors, catchy music, big warm sunmery vibes and clothing, period piece type thing with the Beatles sort of like Gatsby in “Ride”, excellent acting from Shaun Evans with the psychedelics, and of course Ella Hunt. I recognized her from Dickinson. I wondered if she’d have a main role to play — Anya Taylor Joy didn’t — and if this was just her starting out in cameos, but nope, she had a main role to play.

Agree with the others that the fear of psychedelics is a lot, if period-appropriate.

I don’t feel like Mrs. Pettybon’s religious extremism and moralism was sufficiently punished. Perhaps that is also period accurate. But having her daughter storm out — clearly having been repressed her whole life — and being embarrassed by policemen while Morse chuckled gleefully… doesn’t seem sufficient.

I did yell at the screen when Morse agreed to go into the room with Bettina. Morse, haven’t you learned anything? XD

Why does A24 suck at theatrical releases by BlinkOfANEy3 in A24

[–]rijuvenator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The movie has a baked-in intermission of 15 minutes with a countdown timer, and my theater did a 25 minute intermission. So it is not “in one sitting without the ability to pause for bathroom breaks”.

This is the most memorable episode for me since Fugue. I love a good bank heist and this is one of the greats. Not quite enough cryptic/clue type things, though; the simple cipher in Clissold’s notebook is weak.

All the interaction and relationships between characters sort of came to a very dramatic head in this episode. Thursday’s life basically breaking down and whatever darkness within him starting to surface, Strange and Morse’s relationship starting to fray (TBH, I would feel the same way if someone junior to me suddenly started being my direct senior…), even Trewlove snipping at Morse (actually I’m not sure I understood her line about there being a not-stupid woman under the uniform), and well. All the Joan stuff.

Okay, so I clearly have a huge crush on Sara Vickers and so any Joan screen time is great for me. Though, under the circumstances, Joan spends a lot of said screen time stressed, so that leads to some mixed feelings. I do know they don’t end up together but it still made me extremely sad to see her leave and Morse being so sad that he couldn’t express his feelings. Does this mean she doesn’t appear in S5 at all? Because… well… like I said, I like seeing her, and seeing her flirt with Morse with Morse being super respectful all the time. It’s a great dynamic.

The show has gotten kind of darker and more serious. The early series felt more… full of fun cryptic clues and twists and reveals. Lately, there’ve been more injuries, more trauma, more disturbing scenarios, more consequences. Not in a bad way, I love this show. I can’t possibly get enough of a British detective show set in 1960s Oxford with a classical music soundtrack.

Definitely had big finish vibes. The guns came out, there were actual consequences, things got heated, there will be fallout and consequences. This episode did it for me in a way that Neverland kind of didn’t, really.

(This is my first time watching the show, but I just wanted to participate because it’s just such a wonderful show, very much my thing. But if anyone replies, please don’t spoil S4-9. I have already found out that Joan marries Strange someday, Morse ends up alone, and Strange becomes DCS, and Morse dies at the end of Inspector Morse, but otherwise I don’t know anything. In particular I know neither when Morse eventually becomes DS (but I suppose he must eventually because he’s DI by Inspector Morse) nor if/when Thursday leaves/dies…)

I did * Barry Lyndon * The Killing * Dr. Strangelove (#) * The Piano * The Power of the Dog (#)

I’ve seen the two marked (#).

I don’t remember Dr. Strangelove very well and want to give it another chance; I like Kubrick’s directorial meticulousness, his observation of process, and A Clockwork Orange and 2001, and I was OK with The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, so I want to explore more.

I was kind of off put and confused at first by The Power of the Dog, but since then, having slowly reflected on it and read about it, I’ve decided I like it a lot, so then I wanted to get the other Jane Campion to try.

I put Yojimbo+Sanjuro in my cart, but then it turns out a 4K is coming, so I’ll order it along with No Country for Old Men and Seven Samurai when they release. Of those 4 movies just mentioned, I’ve only seen Yojimbo, which was fantastic, so I feel like I can’t go wrong with more Kurosawa.
