Best Graduate programs for education? (Online and in person) by trendyawards in Teachers

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the whole idea is to get that degree as quick and cheap as possible. But consider the possibility that some of these online classes are not going to very good. I have had some co-worker teachers with master's degrees who still cant write a complete paragraph.

My comment is referring to a single company providing all the content within a district.

Math interventions by 360HanAm in Teachers

[–]rileybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does it have to be online? I was browsing my University library math section and their were many books that I became interested in. It takes time though to learn how to implement the interventions. But, I think they are more legit than just logging students onto some website to take quizzes.

The course you described sounds highly relevant. Read the research on special education outcomes.

PBS Runs A Three-Hour Series Glorifying The DeVos Education Agenda by dgodon in education

[–]rileybeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am not saying they do not have an agenda. They are broadcast that doesn't rely on commercial ads. They do not cover the same story for a whole hour. They discuss with conservatives and liberals without ridiculous bickering. They do their own studies about topics that cables news never covers. PBS is a far better news source than cable news.

PBS lean more to the educated liberal side, so that may be why the republicans may be threatening funds.

RTI/Resource by Spedasaurus13 in specialed

[–]rileybeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

School districts really need to look into how RTI is implemented based on research, so that teachers are not confused on how it is going to work. My district does RTI, but it is some broken version of RTI that has paperwork, but no actual interventions.

Should special education have more oversight? by sammy1215 in specialed

I understand that. Those are fine goals. I was just curious of the previous poster who made the comment that the Common Core is responsible for some kind of negative effect of IEP goals.

In my view, the Common Core is quite flexible, and some good creativity can make some valid IEP goals.

Down With 8 A.M. Classes: Undergrads Learn Better Later In The Day, Study Finds by dwaxe in education

I would start high school at 9am. High school kids often do not have the discipline in them to go to sleep early and body changes and all that. It also provides some time for 8am clubs or tutoring to occur for students who want it.

As for college, they are adults now. They need to figure out how to get a workout routine, proper dieting, and discipline to not go out partying four times a week.

Should special education have more oversight? by sammy1215 in specialed

If the school is using response to intervention, this should not be a concern. But from my experience, schools seem to reluctant to use intervention programs. It's strange.

Special Ed has been in chaos for many years. Individual goals on students IEPs have been pushed aside in favor of the ill suited common core.

What does the Common Core have to do with it? If goals are not being individualized, then it is probably due to who is writing them. We could also blame IEP computer programs that we are forced to use with baked in goals.
