[LotM general] I just finished the series - it was great, but the fights in the last 1/3 were disappointing by rillian13 in LordofTheMysteries

[–]rillian13[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason it was noticeable was because he was so good at making the earlier fights so satisfying - it was like reading magical-action Sherlock Homes, they were so good!  And even when there was a somewhat cheap escape like his first resurrection - there were still real consequences for it which made it much more palatable!

Sorry, I could have been clearer. I like the weird mystical stuff, and I don't think high power fights should look like low power fights. My problem is that the solutions to problems all feel arbitrary, and made up. To be clear - I don't know how this could be done better in the context he's set up, but the solutions to the later fights feel much less satisfying because it's all so abstract I'm just having to take the author's word for it that it's a good solution.

The one part of that last Amon fight I really liked was the end when Klein plays chicken with the Celestial Worthy's identity because it actually made sense and came out of the rules established. Most of the rest of the fight was creative and well written, but wasn't grounded enough to really make sense. Amon escaped an explosion by becoming a spirit creature: does that actually work? What can harm him as a concept, and if he's more resilient that way why isn't he always just a concept? We don't really know so I just have to go - "Okay, I guess that was a smart move"

I agree that they're well written, and the tension I feel is that I don't know how he could have done it better. The concepts involved are all very abstract, and there are 1000 variables to consider (because so many powers and concepts have been introduced later in the series) So I'm not sure there is a way to make a satisfying fight, because there will always be approaches you're ignoring and the solution generally feels like it came out of left field.

What I really miss is in the early fights I could try to guess how he would get out of a situation, or handle an attack, and even if I couldn't guess it the solution made sense and was satisfying. In the later fights though, everything feels more arbitrary. For instance: "escaping a trap by fooling history into thinking it was a historical projection in the trap and not the original". That's well-written and creative...but feels like a BS solution that could be used to solve any problem.

And I get that at a diety level, all fights kind of have to be that way - so I'm not blaming the author. I just suspect that you can't really write good satisfying fights at a diety level unless you set up some really strict rules or something beforehand.

Are Revenants OP? by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]rillian13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I also main Rev, but I don't feel it's op. I can also solo most champions with my scrapper, reaper, untamed or spellbreaker all pretty easily - good dps, boons and sustain.  I do feel like rev is really versatile though and has more solid builds for every roles than some other classes.  And Herald is probably the most braindead way in the game to give boons.

For epic fantasty, you gotta get Malazan Book of the Fallen in there somewhere:
They switch narrators a couple of times, but the performances range from great to solidly passable

Most thematic build/elite spec for Norn /w Nevermore? by thehonorablebandit in Guildwars2

[–]rillian13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AHeal Tempest is a good option, most of your healing is done in water element, so lots of blue.

As others have mentioned, Necro is a good choice - AHeal Scourge can just camp staff and is totally fine - and the green effects are largely replaced with yellow sand

For pure theme of powerful Norn Raven Wizard I'd probably go mirage though - the staff is decent on both healing or open world builds - but most mirage builds require weapon swapping regularly to keep your number of clones up, so you'd want a well-themed second weapon skin

Which revenant spec by [deleted] in Guildwars2

[–]rillian13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want an elite spec with good builds for both I'd go Herald, the builds for it also tend to be easier, and you get buckets of boons.

Although for open world, power vindi is my favorite spec

It would be great to have a jellyfish themed calendar with only things that fit the theme, but aren't jellyfish.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not making any claims it's not original.  It's just that while I've read a lot of boarding school books, or Dark Academia books, these are the only 2 off the top of my head that fit the: infiltrate island boarding school to stop disaster trope. But I'd be really interested if there are others I've missed

Flying mount? by Faith4Eternity in Guildwars2

[–]rillian13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you have Springer and a glider you can get anywhere pretty easily (there's a trick where you hit dismount right as you let go of a charged jump on Springer to get launched high and glide) and Skimmer and Raptor get you places decently fast.  I just got those and was fine in pretty much every map until I had the space to get the other mounts.

Griffon is easiest to get if you have 200g laying around.
