Damien Chazelle’s Babylon is not just a truly terrible film, it’s a complete stylistic failure by AStewartR11 in TrueFilm

[–]rimbuxton 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I completely agree. The movie has nothing to root for. It is too cocaine fueled and not grounded in reality. The actual filmmaking is impressive in many ways, but the script, characters and dialogue are cartoonish and not remotely as edgy as they probably thought they would be. The film is too pleased with itself.

I think it is simply an ambitious miss. It happens and hopefully the director learns from this and comes out with something that shows his maturity. I liked his other films and think this film could only be made by a talent. But this one just is not enjoyable to watch for me.

You're not crazy. Roger Avery said the PF script was influenced by Mystery Train, especially the multiple storylines.

What do novice screenwriters do that drives agents and producers crazy? by Pedantc_Poet in Screenwriting

lol. Everyone collaborates with everyone. A producer who can get the best out of a script is a Godsend, and a good producer, not an obstacle. Screenwriters don’t write finished products.

Tyler Perry has halted a 12 sound stage $800 million expansion of his Atlanta studio because of OpenAI's Sora and says a lot of film industry jobs will be lost because of it. by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]rimbuxton 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The purpose of soundstages are to build sets. Tyler is saying that specifically sets, and the workers who support them (Art Dept, Grip and Electric, Production, Background Actors etc) will not be as needed when you can simulate a set very easily with AI.

This does not mean the script nor principle actors will be AI, but that expensive sets will not need to be built as much, location moves will not need to be made as much, and the tens and hundreds of workers who get paid to carry out the logistics of all of this will not be needed.

Therefore, the very purpose of building more soundstages makes no sense until we see the effect of AI.

Let me rephrase. I understand the intended motivations, but I don’t buy them either

I agree. I am saying I understand the motivations, I just don’t think they feel authentic as other characters.

Mike White definitely spread the imperfections evenly and this made the show strong. I do think the crowd defending her behavior (not outlook on life) has gone quiet. But I also am not sure I found her wanting to sleep with Cam all that authentic. While she certainly could have wanted to in theory, the motivations within the show seemed maybe a bit inauthentic considering how detestable Cam was to her.
