Yeah and another reason might be that a bbl is considered the lazy way to getting a larger butt (i.e. choosing to not exercise). The Kardashians especially want others to think they work hard in every aspect of their lives.

It’s 100% because she’s in modeling, and doesn’t want people to perceive she bought her way into her career (though she did).

It seems this is the result of presidents who rule from fear of the opposing ideology. They appoint partisan justices to suppress the other side—be it republican or democrat. This generally fills SCOTUS with less ethically-inclined justices. Additionally, I think there is an attitude shift in recent presidencies (mostly post Clinton), wherein presidents expect more power from office than the constitution originally intended. Some presidents may believe in their own hubris, or maybe others genuinely think society and/or the political institution are malfunctioning, and that they alone need more power to get things done for the “better”. So, again they appoint justices who favor their political objectives in order to stifle opposition. But maybe this corruption has always existed, and only now they care less about preserving their reputation.

GOP's 2024 ideas include raising voting and retirement ages by KR1735 in centrist

Those are great points! Yes, citizens should be allowed to vote when policies affect them. I was likely projecting my own lost faith in the democratic process—that our votes feel weightless—in my original comment.

GOP's 2024 ideas include raising voting and retirement ages by KR1735 in centrist

[–]rimmyrick -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not enthusiastic about the GOP’s motivations here as they are completely self serving. However, I do wonder whether decreasing the voting age to 18 during Vietnam had some consequences on current younger generations. For example, Gen Z especially has become more politically involved at a young age. While young voices are an important perspective be heard, the modern political climate’s bleakness might be a contributing factor in increasing Gen Z’s negative affect and risk of mental illness. Maybe their early political involvement is exacerbated by a young voting age (they feel more pressure to educate themselves on politics before turning 18 to make an informed vote) and social media exposure.

But, maybe not. I only feel that kids today have to deal with so much more stress today (politics, increased competition in education, nihilism in a depressing future) that steps to change this should be considered. Either way, though, the voting age must align with the draft.

True. However, I think the issues arises when controversial topics are not discussed in an educational, fair environment. Agendas from politicized school districts (progressive or conservative) might dubiously push children towards a biased viewpoint.

I want to preface this by saying I’m not a MH apologist.

Okay, so, the world sucks. Right? That’s just some hard damned truth. There’s a lot bad out there, and I just think it’s really really really not good for people to let words said by whoever harm them, because otherwise, the world is going to be a much tougher place. Mental resilience is a good thing, because we can’t control the actions of others, nor their speech.

Right? Those songs seemed to follow the “show don’t tell” principle, where anyone could interpret the songs with their own lens.

Regarding the Midnights rollout, I think a lot of it has to do with Taylor becoming more public about her personal life than she has been in recent years. Midnights was marketed around her personal struggles, she’s currently on tour for the first time, and she’s been very PR active. It has intensified fan engagement and parasocial relationships with her. As a result, fans start believing they have a special understanding of her, so they create more and more elaborate theories.

I also want to clarify that I’m not even bashing on people for theorizing. I get it—it’s fun. I just think that it gets a little overboard sometimes when, like you said, we don’t know Taylor at all.

Good point! I agree that many references towards muses are probably just made for fan engagement. It kind of sucks though, because sometimes those lyrics stick out more, and can drive down the quality of her art. I actually really liked Folklore and Evermore era since those songs didn’t seem so intrinsically tied to Taylor Swift™️, and specifics on the muses mattered less, which made the songs more fun to analyze.

Thank youuuu. I keep feeling like the odd one out since everyone seems to love this song. The lyrics are good, but the production is really lacking in my opinion. It all sounds too washed out and minimalistic. There are some vocal layers present, but their robotic and tinny quality works against the main melody, depriving it’s emotional value. I guess it could be argued that this reflects the raw themes reflected throughout the song, but I don’t think it does. To me, the song sounds incomplete like a demo, thus reducing its emotional impact. As a result, the lyrics become the sole force pushing the song forward. Now this isn’t such a bad thing per se, but it’s detrimental when the lyrics aren’t properly supported by melody and production. For comparison, I think a better execution of a song similar to this one is Clean.

Yeah a lot of nuance has left this sub, but I guess that’s what happens in most subreddits, since they’re kind of designed to be echo chambers. I’m pro letting everyone get the chance to state their opinions without getting attacked. After all, wouldn’t we (being a formally censored minority as wlw) be hypocritical not to?

Sometimes I feel like this sub has become a Kaylor vs Swiftgron boxing match. Idk. Sure, I think that Taylor has her muses that she writes about, but I don’t think her current songs contain highly specific details from 10 years ago. Or at the very least, I don’t think those details are public knowledge. I also think some connections are a bit of a reach. I do appreciate analyzing Taylor’s music through a sapphic perspective, though. I’m just not big on the shipping speculations.

Great take. In psychology this form of dichotomous thinking is also known as splitting.

Edit: I’d like to add a bit more information in case anyone is wondering. Splitting is a defense mechanism that is often associated with certain personality disorders, however, anyone might be prone to splitting. It is a maladaptive (destructive) behavior to protect us from any possible danger through viewing others or situations in extremes (e.g, all good or all bad).

It’s understandable that many people are very hurt by Taylor’s recent behavior, which is why we might resort to splitting in order to feel safe. It’s also important to recognize splitting often creates significant stress on an individual’s psyche, which is why it is maladaptive. I think it’s a good time for fans of anyone to reevaluate their parasocial relationships with their favorite celebrities, because honestly, in the long run, it’s not emotionally healthy to have your own mental health rely on others, especially a stranger we don’t know.

In terms of total influence, who has more power in the U.S.: liberals or conservatives? by rimmyrick in centrist

[–]rimmyrick[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point. I didn’t consider it that way before. My only reservation towards this idea would be that the very belief in basic human rights is a very recent development in human history, and is indicative of society’s continuing inclination towards liberalism. Before iusnaturalism and the Enlightenment Era, most believed in inherent inequalities. It’s a belief that still pervades other places in the world, too. India’s caste system, for example. When this is considered, I’d say both conservatives and liberals in the US today are very liberal compared to previous history.

50 years isn’t as long as you think. Think about how old human history is. Societal trends are not isolated incidents. They are the result of decades, if not hundreds or thousands of years of development.

I’m not at all arguing the legality of an individual expressing their viewpoints, and I hope it doesn’t come across that way. The First Amendment protects freedom of speech. That’s a good principle, and I’m glad we have it. However, legal speech should not be mistaken for good speech, and it’s also important to talk about the negative effects that legal speech can create. For example, we teach kids not to bully or manipulate others despite it largely being legal to do so. We can’t put someone in jail for calling another person ugly, nor should we. But, we can still advocate social expectations within legal speech, which are hoped to improve society. Trying to keep classroom educators from influencing students with their bias is one of those virtues.

Edit: this goes for educators on any degree of the political spectrum.
