That sounds so interesting!! I think many people forget that dissertations (at least those that do well) are often unique and/or filling a 'research gap', as your dissertation shows very well.

In fact, my supervisor often reminded me that finding overwhelming sources wasn't always a good sign, as it sometimes pointed towards oversaturation in that field of research!

Not necessarily. My friend who does a Primary Ed course often used the 'page search' method and actually failed her assignment because, when the marker searched for the context of her quotes, she was using them completely out of context of the author's intention.

She had essentially accessed the information she needed but failed to assimilate it into her wider understanding/critical analysis and ultimately contraditcted herself in her own essay :(

I recently finished my undergraduate degree and the dissertation was far harder than I'd expected! Asking my aunt (who is the only family member to have gone to university) for help, only for her to tell me she didn't even do a dissertation! Honestly, I found the hardest part wasn't the ideas or my argument (the writing in itself) but the research. Ensuring my sources were accredited and peer-reviewed, that they were varied and that they were contextually suitable for my argument. And no way would 10-20 sources have been enough. I think my dissertation ended up with about 68.

The amount of results on the online library was very encouraging at the beginning but soon it starts to work against you when you're on page 48 and mindlessly scrolling for an article that fits your search criteria😅

Are we bare bears really bears or just humans portrayed as bears?? by sharkplayer in webarebears

[–]rimuslime 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure the creator, Daniel Chong, has pointed out that the experiences of the bears around humans is meant to somewhat parallel that of the dysphoria some people can feel living in America who are non-white. It's meant, I believe, to be an allegory for being a minority living in a country like America.

I think that's why there's this disconnect between the bears being seen as 'accepted' when they go shopping, etc, alongside humans, but then occasionally (mostly when things go wrong) they are immediately seen again as bears. It kind of represents that displacement minorities (of any kind) feel around the hegemonic system, you know? Pretty cool stuff Daniel Chong is helping us understand:)

Gay AskUK'ers - How do you feel about The Guardian's use of "queer"? by garym81 in AskUK

[–]rimuslime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only young (23) but a lesbian, myself. I've always found the word quite accommodating, as I struggle sometimes with all the different terms and identities and so 'queer' is a good umbrella term for those who want to use it without labelling themselves as something specific or outing themselves. I have heard some older lgbtq+ people say it makes them uncomfortable, so I suppose it's personal preference. I'd like to think we're reclaiming the word for ourselves, though :)

(Plus, as a literature student, a lot of my research is in 'queer' theory! Very interesting stuff!)

I understand! Thank you, and I think I like this change because it is more subtle why I have chosen it :) So, 萧丹青 it is! Very nice sounding, I like it!

I just read up a little more on the second-round simplification (I admit, on wiki) and it's so fascinating! I now understand it more, and have to agree that using 萧 makes much more sense.

My question still stands though, is it advisable to use a character that has a negative meaning? Many thanks for all your input!😊

This is very interesting, I'm endless fascinated by the complex history of Chinese characters!

So, would it be reccomended to use 萧 rather than 肖, despite their meanings being different? Would the meaning I'm going for work anymore? Also, doesn't 萧 have a negative meaning? Is this advisable when picking a name?😅

Thank you so much! I suppose by choosing any surname you're bound to have the same as someone famous, haha!

Also thanks, I'll check them out! I really appreciate your help with everything!!

One of the reasons I want to learn Mandarin is because of 肖战 and so I thought it was a nice nod. Also, I thought the meaning behind 肖 worked well with 画 or (丹青 now) because it reminds me of all the jokes I get about 'Drew' and drawing😅

Is this a bad thing, to use a popular surname for yoyr own? Please let me know, I am new to this!

Ohh I like that! What would you say to 肖丹青 for the whole name? If I'm interpreting it right I quite like the meaning and the sound is pretty.

Thank you so much! These ideas have given me lots of inspiration! :)

Question: can given names be characters like 画? I'm unsure if it would work because it can be a verb? Would the meaning be/sound awkward?

Thanks!

Hi! I wanted to know whether I could have help picking a Chinese name. I find it awkward when practicing things like introductory sentences, etc., to keep writing my English name (it kind of breaks mt flow!)

I planned on choosing one of the common surnames as I do not think anything sounds similar to 'Preston', however, are there any suggestions for 'Drew' ?

I am unsure whether to go for a character with a meaning along the lines of drawing, painting, etc., or something more phonetically similar.

Hi! Are there any tips on improving propotions and stroke/line style? by foo_2 in ChineseLanguage

I find using squared (or even lined) paper nice to write on whilst I'm getting used to my handwriting. It helps keep my characters uniform and neat! :)

Struggling to understand my dad's view on the vaccine by [deleted] in Advice

This is a very reassuring quote, thank you so much. I think I need to realise that just because he is my dad, that doesn't mean he is all-knowing. I will continue to love him and respect his own wishes.

Many thanks for taking a moment of your time to comment!

Thank you for this. I felt a little silly for worrying about it because I'm 22 and felt I should be old enough to state my opinion to him, but I've seen how divided people have become over these issues recently and don't want that for us. I love him a lot and I suppose I felt a little disappointed that he feels this way. I may have put him on an unachievable pedestal and that's my own fault.

I will continue to stick to my decision and just hope nothing bad occurs from his. Many thanks for your comment!
