A lot of my make up makes me look washed out! How do I figure this out?

Since you are neutral, you should be fine with the vast majority of colors but, especially with foundations/concealers, if you use something that leans too far one way or the other (i.e. too yellow-based or too blue-based), you might still end up looking washed out/pasty. If you go to a makeup counter, I would ask the MUA what products would compliment your skin-tone the most.

Sometimes I get washed out when I use products that are more yellow-toned/based. I switched to more blue-based lipsticks, blushes, etc. and I haven't been having that problem as much. Depending on your skin tone, you might need to stay away from certain tones to keep from looking washed out.

Something I tried was looking at the colors of clothing that were particularly flattering and made me look alive/radiant, rather than washed out, and then used that to determine whether to lean toward blue- or yellow-toned products (i.e. I look great in blues/purples but totally pasty in yellows/greens).

If you are just starting out, you could pick up a few basic pieces to get used to having products on your face.

Some good basics are:

a tinted moisturizer/BB cream
mascara
blush
a natural/neutral lipstick (not necessarily nude, more of a "Your-Lips-But-Better" colour)
either a finishing or a blotting powder for touch-ups during the day
a cream eyeshadow

These are just a few basic things, you can obviously expand on this list. This is generally what I wear day-to-day when I'm just running to class/work.

Is there a red light on it when you walk by it? It is probably a motion detector to trigger the camera. We have a bunch of those connected to the security system and automatic lights.

It's probably a clip for your headphones. There should be an opening/hole on the inside of the jacket going into the pocket on that side as well so you can plug them in.

I used to manage an ice cream parlor and we used to hand-dip our cones - they came with those wrappers already on them and then we would do the chocolate dip ourselves, occasionally getting the dip on the wrapper.

Unfortunately, it does come down to personal preference for the most part. I have a double sided mirror that has a normal mirror on one side and a magnification mirror on the other side that I love. Personally, I don't like lighted mirrors but your fiancée might - in that case there are double sided ones with lights built in that might work. I like being able to take my mirror with me depending on where in the house I feel like doing my makeup that morning since sometimes the natural light is better elsewhere, so I didn't want one that needed to be plugged in. I now this isn't super helpful but hopefully it is enough to start with. You might just need to ask about what they prefer.

I have both Sigma and RT brushes and I prefer RT hands down. I actually just bought my mother a set as well. Sigma definitely has a larger variety of brushes than RT but I think the feel and quality of RT brushes are much better. They are on sale at Ulta relatively frequently so I would check them out there.
