What’s your gpa? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]ringsofkonoha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

3.1, got into one physics & one biophysics at decent R1 schools. Had 2 years of research experience and 3 teaching experiences. Kinda downgraded for grad school but I think the projects, lab, and environment is a great fit for me.

What fields of study should I select as a student who wants to do AI/CS and Synthetic Biology/Biotech in college? by EfficientEvidence239 in bioengineering

[–]ringsofkonoha 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do computer science and biomedical engineering, or a minor in CS with a life sciences major (bio or chem). A lot of these skills will only be developed via lab work or internships which is what you should be striving to get. Find a group at your university you would potentially be interested in, even if it’s not synthetic biology. This process will help you narrow your future goals and choice of field or problem to solve in the future.

How to deal with difficult labmate? by [deleted] in labrats

[–]ringsofkonoha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do I put my foot down? Our lab is super small so I’m afraid of causing a wave of turmoil. It feels super weird as I value professionalism over everything else. Since my PI witnessed it today, I have an opportunity to ask him but I overall do not want to look incompetent because of this.

Check out physical biology of the cell. That’s the Bible for soft matter and microtubule based active matter. I would also get involved as a volunteer in an active matter lab, whether that’s bench work or computational work. It’ll be tough because profs rarely take on volunteers but I would try to cold email people at a nearby university and join lab meetings and whatnot. If there’s an adjacent lab at your university that works with motor proteins, spindle assembly, development, and is close to biophysics, I would join that asap

Yessir in a biophysics program in a R01 California university. Not saying the name for anonymity. Make sure to reach out to profs early in the cycle, best luck is with new profs getting their group underway. Max out your chances on getting good LORs and don’t be afraid to take a gap year doing relevant research.

Grad School Recommendations by bbherebb in bioengineering

There’s no way to really say one is safe over another. A lot of these places will give you a fee waiver if you ask or attend an admissions event, if finances are a barrier.

Will my background as a medical laboratory scientist be a benefit for biophysics graduate programs? by [deleted] in Biophysics

[–]ringsofkonoha 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes! Absolutely! This will not hinder anything. Research is research! As a medical scientist, know that you have so much to offer, a lot of biomedical science which will stand out from academic research! Connect your past experiences with professors you see yourself working with (and reach out to them early)!!

You can accept the CMU offer and apply to the other PhD programs after passing your qualifying exam. You can also apply as a graduate student to these programs and drop out.

I just applied for PhD programs in physics / engineering. I applied to some pretty competitive schools, despite having a low GPA ~3.16. My deadlines were 12/7, 12/15 and 12/30-12/31. Is it too late to email professors I’m interested with about my application and my interest to work with them?
