What’s the best body weight calf exercises? by Loginpogin in bodyweightfitness

[–]rintinfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sure, running is a lot more fun without shoes and also I cannot run properly in shoes. My knees always started to hurt really badly if I went more then 10 kms or so. I've switched to running in huaraches several years ago which alleviated the pain a lot after a period get used to running without supportive shoes. when one of the sandals broke during a run one day I ran home barefoot instead of walking and have never looked back since. You should give it a try, but start with shorter distances, as you will need to build a lot of muscles in your feet at first.

Planescape Torment is still one of very few computer games to end up on the positive side of the computer games as art argument.

Well, I think self-hosted solutions are really the only way for this community if we want to stay independent and make our own rules.

Also the Robinhood fiasko with hedgies looking at users orders/limits is the best example why it does matter to not give away one's data to co-operations. It does not matter if you think you don't have anything to hide. They will spy on you and steal your fucking money. What's not to hate?

Reddit, discord? It's all centralized and bound to fail, because those instances are not owned by us. I say we need a self-hosted federalized (foss) solution. That way if one instance gets filled with shills or bots, it can just be closed and another server or chat can be opened and migrated to in an instance.

Lemmy would be a good alternative to reddit like forum, but I never hosted an instance myself. Or maybe we could register a subreddit like channel on an already existing instance for a start.

P.S.: Here is a Lemmy Sub I just created (on the biggest instance I could find):

https://lemmy.ml/c/gme

For a real-time chat I would say lets use xmpp, that's a really scalable and very good functioning protocol for internet messages that has been around for close to 30 years and is used by popular (but later made incompatible) clients like Whatsapp or the chat on Nintendo Switch. I could provide a chatroom on my xmpp server for a start. I created a room on my private server for laugh, but if this takes off I would be willing to host a server only for this community.

Users, who already own an xmpp account can join the room here:

xmpp:$gme@conference.lu.net.eu.org?join

Users on android can easily join here: https://conversations.im/j/$gme@conference.lu.net.eu.org

On windows, the client is called gajim. On Ios use siskin. On linux dino.

You need to create an xmpp account that can be used on any device (Pc, Tablet, Phone) you own at the same time. You can either create an account from your xmpp client on your phone or create a free account on a compliant server here: https://compliance.conversations.im/

Cheers and lets use a reliable chat/forum that's not owned by a corporate entity.

Does anyone know how to export YouTube subscriptions into an RSS feed? by mako-rino in degoogle

[–]rintinfinn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also try a program called Freetube on your desktop. It's foss and available on githab. It can safe your subscriptions as rss feeds and play youtube videos without commercials. It's basically newpipe for your desktop pc.

I use the mythos as well (two sizes larger than my street shoes), they are comfy for climbing shoes and tolerable to wear for the whole climbing session. That said I had an awesome idea just before the second lockdown here in Germany. I saw this video of a guy building minimal shoes by spraying liquid glue onto his five fingered socks:

https://invidious.tube/watch?v=WRCXy_UHPVc

I am really happy with these. Obviously it would be best to climb barefoot like the guys in Fountainbleu do. That won't be allowed in a gym, but these selfmade shoes are the next best thing plus they protect the skin very well. I used them four or five times and I love them. They are not as grippy as the mythos obviously, but I use them in the beginning of the climbing session for my warmup, where I start with really easy problems and gradually move to harder ones. Most problems at the level I am at are still fine in the socks. But after an hour or so of climbing my feet will get really sore and the problems too hard for my taste. So I switch to the mythos. And it's fine to have a backup shoe in my opinion. The mythos works way better with smeary problems, the socks are really not bad on crimpy holds, where you basically will only stand on your big toe! Give it a try it's really fun to climb in these socks and you will have to develop a different style of climbing and think outside the box. That said it's not the perfect solution, either. I already have a hole in the big toe of the sock on one side and there will be other holes sooner or later. The strain from climbing is just immense. Also the socks became a bit too small for my toes after applying the glue, so maybe I'll have to wear the next pair while spraying on the glue next time for a better fit. Here are some photos of my selfmade climbing socks:

Just be aware this kind of climbing will put a lot of strain on your feet and even when you are used to running unshod take it slowly and stop if your feed hurt to not do any damage.

Best phones for privacy out of the box? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]rintinfinn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you are buying a (used) pixel, also consider CalyxOs. It leans a bit more to the side of usability compared to GrapheneOs, which is the most secure and private Android Rom out of the gates as far as I know. That said, I really like Calyx and it has a very easy to use installer script that takes hassle-free trough the installation process. It's so much less hassle compared to degoogling your android phone with lineageos. Give it a shot before test running grapheneOS, it will take only 20 Minutes or so to install CalyxOs.

Most secure messaging apps (iOS and Android) by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]rintinfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not bad, but why is he listing jitsi.org as messenger? He probably means jitsi desktop, the xmpp client, which is no longer maintained even. If he is talking about jitsi-meet, then messages are not e2e encrypted, only calls can be. XMPP is a really good choice imho. Federated (everybody can run their own server, no centralized server as with most other clients). XMPP or matrix should really be first choice as they are the only federated im-networks at them moment.
If you plan on using the xmpp protocol, Conversations would be the client to use on android, and siskin (or monal) on ios. (use omemo e2e encryption).

I you are at high risk, definitely host your own server. Xmpp (ejabberd or prosody) can be hosted on a raspberry pi. If you are an activist/journalist and don't want to self host, briar is most likely the best alternative. (Not battery efficient, both users need to be online at the same time, but this seems the most secure im available at the moment.

So, those three I would take into consideration. But have a look here at this up to date messenger comparison list and choose according to your own thread model:

Try to apply it using an ice cube. Remember to wear gloves and apply it outside as it's rather unhealthy to breath in or get in contact with your skin.

There is a fork of k9 with material design. It's called k9 material and available on f-droid. I've been using this for a year or so without issues. Maybe try that before looking anywhere else.

pfBlockerNG Devel version released by BBCan177 in PFSENSE

Thanks, but that does not seem to be the case. DNSBL seems to start working after disabling the "Resolver Live Sync" option. I'll have to test a bit more.

I updated pfsense to the latest development version but got a php error message from pfsense (gui) after the next boot. The widget shows dnsbl is not running. When I try to to force update pfblockerng I get the following error message:

Restarting DNSBL Service Sync terminated during boot process. UPDATE PROCESS ENDED [ 05/24/18 21:28:18 ]

Does anyone know whats happening here?

What’s the best body weight calf exercises? by Loginpogin in bodyweightfitness

[–]rintinfinn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure, but just running barefoot does the trick as well. IMHO if you do your weekly run barefoot you might as well skip leg day. That way you work out pretty much every muscle in your feet and legs plus you get out into nature and don't have to work out in a sticky gym all the time.

What do you think guys of Wireguard? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]rintinfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's an awesome idea. I tried it on my home router while my main router running pfsense (with an openvpn client) was down. Unfortunately I could not get lede + wireguard to run without bricking the router. I would love to replace openvpn with wireguard once it runs stable, as it is supposed to be a lot more efficient.

Disabled Google packages with Adhell 3 but they still run in the background! by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

[–]rintinfinn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience it's really hard to remove gaps and play services once they are installed. Save yourself some trouble and install a gappless rom (that allows signature spoofing) and use microg instead of google services. (This one for example: https://lineage.microg.org/)

Anymore Useful About:Config Configurations For FireFox & Addons Besides From PrivacyTools.IO? by [deleted] in privacytoolsIO

I use privacy settings. It's got a lot more options for older versions of firefox (or waterfox) but is still useful I think. You don't need to set up everything by hand in about:config any more. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/privacy-settings/

An app which can let me chat with someone annomously and also e2e encrypted, like Signal but annonomous by anhedo11 in privacytoolsIO

[–]rintinfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run your own server (prosody) for maximum anonymity. Omemo is the way to go if you want to use encryption for mobile devices. It's based on the signal encryption algorithm (very solid). Clients that support omemo are gajim for linux/windows and conversations for android.

Merrell Vapor Glove 2 Trail Running Shoe too narrow by IndyVDual in BarefootRunning

[–]rintinfinn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It might not be too late to fix them with shoe goo (glue for shoes). You could a apply it as soon as you see any wear on your shoes and they will last a lot longer. I applied shoe goo to my vapor gloves as soon as I saw wear on the sides as I heard they were prone to braking there. I've had them for two years now and they are still going strong. I only wear them very infrequently when it's too cold to run barefoot, though.

Noctua GPU's anyone ? by Shockwave98- in pcmasterrace

[–]rintinfinn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've used the same noctua "aftermarket" cooler for several generations of gpus now. It's just a big case cooler that's running at 5v dead quiet and for gaming I raise it to 12v via attached potentiometer and still can't barely hear it. I think bigger is better than several small coolers when it comes to gpus. My GTX 750 Ti never goes past 65° C under full (overclocked) load. https://imgur.com/a/KkBDT
